To use the word "guys" to refer to people

AliceAbsolum · 07/02/2021 19:22

When referring to a mix of gendered people is there anything wrong with saying:

"Hey guys"

"Nice one guys"

"Guys, shall we catch up soon"?

Is it sexist against women? I don't know what opinion to have, so wise vipers please tell me your thoughts.

I use it at work, to an all female group.

But I hate “ladies” and also hate “girls” when the women are adults.

Guess I could say “people” or “everyone” but I feel I’m using it in a non gendered way.

NiceGerbil · 07/02/2021 21:14

I say everyone/ people/ gang etc

Add I mentioned upthread. Love it when people read the thread.

Taylrse · 07/02/2021 21:14

My friend group at uni tended to say "lads" when we were addressing the group (all females). In informal situations with friends it doesn't bother me what word is used.

However when I go to a restaurant or shop, I really do hate it when I'm greeted with "can I help you guys". Makes me cringe

Hotzenplotz · 07/02/2021 21:15

"Cunts".

StrawberrySquash · 07/02/2021 21:16

I happily use it for all female. It's just generic these days.

Hotzenplotz · 07/02/2021 21:17

Or how about "Human bastards"?

Ontheboardwalk · 07/02/2021 21:18

Doesn’t bother me. I work in male dominated industry and it’s been used by me and my bosses

Had someone who used to say every time 'lads and of course girls' which proper wound me up

Rainboom · 07/02/2021 21:20

I use it all the time, at work, on the DC (one girl), with family, my parents...

Tell me now if i shouldn't?

BumbleBeegu · 07/02/2021 21:20

I use it...didn't realise until reading this thread that some women might have an issue with it. Still can't quite understand why 🤷‍♀️

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 07/02/2021 21:21

People have issues with anything and everything these days.

I ignore them, and stick to "guys", I like it.

Standrewsschool · 07/02/2021 21:22

Fine with me.

BumbleBeegu · 07/02/2021 21:24

@GoodEggy

Totally fine. I would use it for a mixed group of people or either single sex group. Singularly I'd use it for a man and not a woman though.

If anyone finds it offensive then they're really trying hard to be offended.

Exactly this!

I think context is everything here...it's pretty obvious when it's being used to be inclusive of 'everyone'...and you'd have to be trying REALLY bloody hard to be offended 🤦‍♀️. Which is quite pathetic to be honest about a cheerful greeting!

Teamox · 07/02/2021 21:30

Well in Ireland, a group of any sex is often referred to as 'lads'.

"Come on lads, let's go to the next bar."

Same use as guys.

TimToe · 07/02/2021 21:51

I like it. It's unisex.

ElizaLaLa · 07/02/2021 21:52

You can't go wrong with 'everyone'

I suppose you can't use 'people' in case someone identifies as a door knob.

AndAPartridgeInABearTree · 07/02/2021 21:53

I use it with mixed sex and single sex (females) even. and also with our senior management team which was somewhat of a faux pas

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 07/02/2021 21:53

I use it, for mixed sex or all either sex. I'm fine with it.

Aria999 · 07/02/2021 21:53

'You guys' is a fairly standard plural form in America. I always suspect that's really why some brits don't like it.

Bloominggoodvibes · 07/02/2021 21:55

I think guys is fine!

Pipandmum · 07/02/2021 21:56

I use it, but none if my friends do. I always thought it was because I grew up in America.

GladAllOver · 07/02/2021 21:58

I use the term because it's about the only word that can include everyone regardless of sex, gender. trans etc

Firstimer703 · 07/02/2021 21:58

I used to org for a gender equality organisation and it isn't considered to be OK to use 'guys' for a mixed group.

Soontobe60 · 07/02/2021 22:00

@CheshireSplat

I didnt have a problem with it (woman). Then a female colleague challenged the men in a meeting who'd used the phrase by saying "what would you say if I asked how many guys you've slept with?". Made me think and now I try not to use it but occasionally do...
Err, slightly homophobic?
Soontobe60 · 07/02/2021 22:00

But ‘guys’ means males though🤷🏼‍♀️
Soontobe60 · 07/02/2021 22:02

I teach primary - I use ‘everyone’ or folks. In my previous school all the SLT were female - we called ourselves guys 🤣🤣
