To think Wyse London need to rethink their marketing

I get bombarded by ads from Wyse London on Facebook - no idea why

But what sticks out me is it’s generally a woman wearing clothes she really can’t carry off

A quick Google showed the lady is the company founder but still, if you want to appeal to a certain market, then surely you get models who show it off to the best advantage

That’s what puts me off Wyse - she looks really average and I don’t aspire to look like that.
But that is how you are going to look. Lots of people want to see how they are going to look. Seeing clothes on an 18yr old isn't magically going to make you look like that even if that is what you aspire to look like. Maybe her target market have reached an age where they understand that and just want some idea of how the clothes will look on them.

Beyond that I had a look at their Instagram having never heard of them before and they are just clothes. I have no idea why a 40/50/60/70 year old wouldn't wear them? It's hardly hardly hot pants and belly tops is it?

Cyberworrier · 08/02/2021 09:59

I do find this quite ageist/sexist in some way, as it seem to imply women should look a certain way and age. The woman in question is very attractive 🤷‍♀️ . There’s also an older (older than 40 at least I’d guess) woman of colour on the website who is also beautiful. I’m in my early 30s btw. I like when designers use a variety of models, not just size 6/8 20 somethings. Good for her.
The clothes are nice too.

Bearbehind · 08/02/2021 10:01

But that's not what your OP said. It said you didn't think someone in her fifties "could really carry off" the clothes and it was a look only for twentysomethings.

But the 2 are intrinsically linked - I think the odd expressions make it look like she’s not comfortable in them - hence not being able to carry them off

OP posts:
Brefugee · 08/02/2021 10:06

also having looked at their website, she's in a few of the photos (maybe the advertising? IDK).

You seem very judgy about what over... what? 30s? 40s? 50s? can wear. Just look away if it hurts your eyes or something.

OuiOuiKitty · 08/02/2021 10:10

I think the odd expressions make it look like she’s not comfortable in them.

I think those 'odd expressions' are just her face. What do you want her to do with her face Confused

Bearbehind · 08/02/2021 10:11

The facebooks ads, which is what highlighted them to me, all seem to have her as the model - much less so on the website

Also what is on the website is much nicer than the FB ads - I really like the knitwear but it’s not that that’s shown on FB

I honestly don’t know anyone over 20s / 30s who would wear a tank top over a dress yet that’s what me, as a 40 something women, gets targeted with

I just find it odd - but also conscious it’s taking up far too much of my thoughts! 😂

Can you post a screenshot of the offending picture/s op?

I've looked again and can't see any pictures like you describe.

Maireas · 08/02/2021 10:18

I'm not on Facebook, but my link to the site shows her in lovely clothes she most definitely can carry off!
Are you sure it's Wyse London, OP, maybe it's some other site. Wyse is one of my favourites, currently. That and Toast.

Bearbehind · 08/02/2021 10:22

I can’t find the actual photo now but it was the top right outfit worn by the top centre model

Confused
Maireas · 08/02/2021 10:25

I think all the pictures look fine.
Taste is subjective, though.
The clothes I've bought from Wyse are good quality and stylish imo.

Hagotcha80 · 08/02/2021 10:27

* Nice to see someone old and unusual looking showing clothes *

ElizaLaLa · 08/02/2021 10:28

My Confused face was because I'm still confused. Theres nothing wrong with that outfit, on any age woman.

timetest · 08/02/2021 10:32

I’ve bought clothes from there. I’m 68. I didn’t realise they had an upper age limit for the wearer. Silly old me.

IrishGirl2020 · 08/02/2021 10:33

I honestly don’t know anyone over 20s / 30s who would wear a tank top over a dress yet that’s what me, as a 40 something women, gets targeted with

I know quite a few 40+ women in my patch of west London who would wear that outfit combo.

Another website which also uses a mix of ‘real’ people and models is:

ridleylondon.com/

They also do the floral dress and knitwear combo and the owner often models the outfits on her Insta page and she looks fab.

I see quite a few people wearing those clothes looks around here too and they are mostly over 30 (in part I’m sure because the clothes are expensive). Personally I think they look great and very feminine and comfortable and if that’s the look you like then why shouldn’t you go for it?
Like a previous poster said it’s hardly hot pants is it? 😂

IrishGirl2020 · 08/02/2021 10:47

@Bearbehind

I think it’s this outfit?

To be fair it’s not my personal taste either but I would wear either of those pieces individually. Can’t really see what’s wrong with them tbh

To think Wyse London need to rethink their marketing
Bearbehind · 08/02/2021 10:55

That’s the one IrishGirl

Agree that individually they would be OK

I guess what I find strange is putting things together and using a look that limits their appeal - but clearly there is the West London market who it does appeal to and they can afford it!

DappledThings · 08/02/2021 11:16

Looks good to me

Maireas · 08/02/2021 11:18

Well, I live in Yorkshire and it appeals to me.
Love the clothes. The tank top over a dress gives an extra layer of warmth, particularly if you don't want to wear a cardigan.
The colours are great.
@IrishGirl2020 - thanks for the link to Ridley! I think I got so fed up with Zara and H&M etc I started to look for something a bit different.

VinylDetective · 08/02/2021 11:31

Me too, I’m a year younger than you. I’m sure someone will be along in a minute to say we’ve got dementia so we don’t count.
Maireas · 08/02/2021 11:35

@VinylDetective - me too GrinGrin!!

TheCrowening · 08/02/2021 11:35

I am mid 40s and the clothes aren’t to my taste, I felt they were a bit frumpy and “old fashioned” for me.

But clothes don’t have an age. People should wear what they want. A real shame to see such judgement of a woman on here.

lalafafa · 08/02/2021 11:41

I love their clothes and Marielle is really endearing, I think she looks great.

Griselda1 · 08/02/2021 11:52

There was an interesting article in yesterday's Telegraph about the company. Apparently she encourages feedback and discussion about the clothes, whether good or bad. The business model of pre ordering is great in terms of reducing waste.
The owner is 5ft 3 and as someone of a similar height it's great to see how the clothes look on her. I 'm not at all keen on their jeans but love the rest of the clothes.

Sobloodyexhausted · 08/02/2021 11:58

I fell in love with a rainbow striped Wyse jumper whilst watching an episode of Inside number 9 (once removed). No way I could afford one though sadly. Also I have a bad habit of killing cashmere by mistakingly chucking it in the main wash making it only fit for a child to squeeze into.
