To think Wyse London need to rethink their marketing

I get bombarded by ads from Wyse London on Facebook - no idea why

But what sticks out me is it’s generally a woman wearing clothes she really can’t carry off

A quick Google showed the lady is the company founder but still, if you want to appeal to a certain market, then surely you get models who show it off to the best advantage

I just looked again on IG. I don't understand what's to not 'pull off'?

Its normal clothes Confused

Can you explain op?

Councilworker · 07/02/2021 21:59

I'm 40. I think she looks fabulous. It's well out of my price range but I absolutely love the sequin cuff jumpers and cardigans she's designed. There's younger models on the website with tank tops and dresses. I don't think it's a great look for anyone but then I had an early 2000s vintage tank top phase I'm trying to forget.

shinynewapple2021 · 07/02/2021 22:40

I've never heard of this brand before . Just looked on their website. So the model referred to as Marielle is who you are talking about ? She looks just as good in the clothes as the other models do .

Illegible · 07/02/2021 22:52

It's those damn algorithms OP , you must be giving off those over- 40 vibes on social media.

Dontsaykwen · 07/02/2021 22:53

It’s her brand, her product. If I looked that good I would be modelling my own product too. I think she looks great.

IrishGirl2020 · 07/02/2021 23:01

I’m confused by this.
What point is the OP trying to make? That basically all women over 30 look terrible so should keep off social media and not dare show themselves especially if have the audacity to wear colourful clothes or shock, horror a printed dress and tank top?
Personally I love Wyse London and think Marielle looks fantastic and very stylish. And generally I much prefer to see ‘real’ models as opposed to unrealistic air-brushed visions of perfection that no-one could ever achieve in reality. Those have their place in glossy magazines wearing couture etc but they’re not much use in helping you decide whether sometime you plan to buy to wear will actually suit you

Propercrimbo2020 · 07/02/2021 23:03

I have several Wyse jumpers. I love them! They’re really well made, timeless and super warm (mine are cashmere)!
I’m 45. I wouldn’t consider myself old. Hmm

DejaVoodoo · 07/02/2021 23:15

What a nasty horrible thread; a double whammy of ageism here:

Firstly, it’s not only 20 somethings that buy clothes, so why should all clothing modelled by that age? Secondly, why are you saying that those clothes shouldn’t be worn (or can’t be “carried off”) by anyone over 30? They’re fairly normal styles, not really out there.

underneaththeash · 07/02/2021 23:44

I'm still confused and the OP isn't a troll (has had plenty of normal posts).
Personally though, I wouldn't buy anything off a facebook ad as they're usually chinese rubbish...

bluebellscorner · 08/02/2021 00:30

She looks great but I think there more to selling a look than that. I don’t know how to put this but she has the same expression in all photos, and it’s not a happy/friendly/positive/cool or even neutral expression. It doesn’t sell the style at all. She could be in some of the shots but in my opinion she features in far too many of them

HarrietSchulenberg · 08/02/2021 00:56

I'm not sure what women over 50 are meant to wear that's acceptable to society. I turned 50 recently, am I now meant to don only beige, sludge or shades of grey, and slink into the background wrapped in a sensible anorak?
I like some of their stuff (their site stats must have rocketed tonight) but their prices are way out of my league.

Glenchase · 08/02/2021 01:04

I used to buy T-shirts from a certain website. Customers had said they wanted to see models of different weights. So the implemented it - and after a few months they quietly went back to using slim models. When challenged they admitted that sales had fallen on the T-shirts photographed on larger models. Because advertising is basically aspirational and if you don’t aspire to look like the photo you won’t buy it. That’s what puts me off Wyse - she looks really average and I don’t aspire to look like that.

Glenchase · 08/02/2021 01:07

Firstly, it’s not only 20 somethings that buy clothes, so why should all clothing modelled by that age?
Not saying that’s the case at all. There are lots of older ladies who look fabulous. Linda Rodin, Grece Ghanem, Lyn Slater, all look fabulous. But the lady in the photos for Wyse looks decidedly average. Nothing to do with age.

MaliceOrgan · 08/02/2021 01:14

Women over 40 shouldn't be allowed out, let alone buy nice clothes for themselves. Lock 'em up for crying out loud. We shouldn't have to see such things. It's a disgrace.

Hadjab · 08/02/2021 01:16

From the website:

“Wyse is for women with a sense of joie de vivre. It has nothing to do with being a certain age or looking a certain way – but it has everything to do with wanting elevated knitwear (and beyond) that’s also unexpected… and a bit fabulous“

This pretty much sums up their most excellent attitude.

StormzyInaDCup · 08/02/2021 02:53

The models look odd and the clothes are just as odd! I'm with you op 🙄 like dressing my nans teapot!

Bearbehind · 08/02/2021 07:28

That’s what puts me off Wyse - she looks really average and I don’t aspire to look like that.

And this

It’s not her age, it’s that I don’t think she make the clothes look good largely because of the weird expressions and the fact she hardly ever looks at the camera

Interesting that people thought it was an advertising thread - it’s not but I guess they will have more hits if people have looked

I wonder how many people actually bought anything though

OP posts:
Bearbehind · 08/02/2021 07:39

Sorry, that should have said ‘just’ her age

I can’t find the tank top and dress combo photo now but that’s the one that prompted this thread - I’ll keep looking as I’d love know know who’d actually try and pull that look off

OP posts:
IrishGirl2020 · 08/02/2021 07:55

Because advertising is basically aspirational and if you don’t aspire to look like the photo you won’t buy it.

But it’s easy to make a tall, slim 18 year old look good in a t-shirt especially with professional hair and make up. Surely most people don’t think they will look the same? Or does that sort of self awareness only come with age?

Anyway curious to think what OP thinks we over-40s should be wearing? A tasteful palette of neutrals , beige, navy, black maybe? Anything as long as we don’t draw attention to ourselves 😂

MassDebate · 08/02/2021 08:14

I think it’s refreshing to see an “ordinary” person wearing the clothes, although I do think Marielle Wyse has awful posture and needs to work on lowering her shoulders! Not all the combinations are to my taste, but life would be dull if we all liked the same things wouldn’t it. I’ve bought a couple of things from Wyse recently and love the bright colour combinations - makes me feel very cheery wearing them!

Brefugee · 08/02/2021 09:00

Well done, Ms Wyse, you made me look! I think the dresses are uninspiring, but some of the colours are great.

Woodspritely · 08/02/2021 09:09

@ElizaLaLa

I hadn't heard it it. Just googled

I think that's the point of the thread.

Have to say I agree
Maireas · 08/02/2021 09:38

I've bought things from Wyse London
I'm 61.
I really like the styles and colours, but if it's not for you, ignore the ads.

Respectabitch · 08/02/2021 09:50

If you don't think Marielle is a very good model because of her posture or facial expression or whatever, fine. But that's not what your OP said. It said you didn't think someone in her fifties "could really carry off" the clothes and it was a look only for twentysomethings.
