For thinking what's the fucking point anymore?

"You shouldn't say that because you don't know what people are going though!"
Which is what a woman said to me when I asked her to pull up her mask yesterday. Right back at you. How the fuck does she think me and my colleagues feel having to deal with Covidiots like her on a daily basis? (I work in a supermarket.) She had her nose sticking out and kept pulling her mask away from her face, but because she's struggling and trying her best (so am I) that makes it acceptable? She didn't say she was exempt, and honestly if you're wearing a mask wear the damned thing properly! I then overheard her say 'How dare she say that to me?" to one of my colleagues in a really angry voice. I couldn't have been more fucking polite about it if I'd tried!
(I wish I'd said what I was thinking, that I dare because I'm more scared of getting Covid and dying from it than I am of shitty customers, but that might not have helped.)
I'm getting to the stage where I just want to lock myself in my house and refuse to come out until this is all over. I'm having panic attacks, my mental health is shot, and I don't feel like I can do this anymore. I'm also autistic and find certain things hard to cope with. The only reason I go to work is because I work with some lovely people who are keeping me sane at the moment.

Added to that the two women I was working with yesterday were agreeing with her. I spoke to my manager who confirmed I'd done the right thing, and when I told them that they got shirty with me too.

Then there was the fuckwit I dealt with on Friday. Again, I asked him to pull his mask up over his nose. "I don't think so' he said, and pulled one of those sunflower lanyards out of his shirt. Apparently he's exempt because he's autistic, but chooses to wear a mask. (See above, I was also standing next to a colleague of mine who's autistic.) I couldn't quite believe it, either wear one or don't, they don't work if your nose is sticking out, he was with a young woman who was wearing hers properly and another bloke who also had his nose sticking out. (I've noticed in my area it's men who are more likely to want to share their germs with everyone else.)

Then there are the people who walk in without wearing one at all, I was doing my shopping after work and three people, not a mask among them. I asked them if they had masks, the two women pulled theirs out and the bloke said he didn't have one, but of course he didn't bother going to where we keep the spare ones, he just carried on walking along. Twat.

I get it OP, it’s is about having a bit of respect. If your classed as a key worker you have little to no choice but to work in front of the public and at the end of the day it’s not that hard to wear a mask properly on your entire face out of respect surely? I didn’t get the impression you were worried about dying but sick of people thinking they’re above the rules. The arrogance of some people is both baffling and selfish. YANBU

pistachioglace · 07/02/2021 19:30

@gingganggooleywotsit

No mask no entry it should be. If you can’t wear a mask for a few minutes stay at home. Get someone else to get your shopping.
And if there is nobody else?
Neenan · 07/02/2021 19:30

Pisses me off too, , if only Covid Aerosols were visible and you could see them floating around the face of those infected you could bet your bottom dollar the covidiots would have a double mask on, goggles and it fitted properly whilst standing 10 metres away.

I actually saw someone the other day talking to someone else wearing a mask with their hand over their mouth. Not their nose, not moving away just talking with their hand over their mouth.

Like that made any fucking difference at all.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 07/02/2021 19:32

Typical fellow British attitudes - mix of conscientious law abiding health and safety mindful and caring civic duty types and a legacy of forever Covidiots who don’t care about their health or yours. British entitlement culture is world class just like our Covid stats on mutations, excess fatalities and continued community incubation and super spreading. Possibly world unique too is the own goal criminal law loopholes on exemption which has no understandable correlation on pandemic science of risk mitigation. Inevitably it is this too common British only exemption misuse bandwagon that unlike the rest of the real world empowers people to play this get out of jail card and self declare exemption or buy a fake easy to source meaningless lanyard which does not prevent self harm infection nor onwards transmission etc etc. There is probably a direct scientific reason why so many customer facing transportation workers are loss to contracting Covid as the ongoing superficial face covering own goal continues to rumble on. Many wear a mask to pass the entry requirements and then it’s off with the mask whether its a crowded indoor retail or transportation environment.

It is evident here on MumsNet who are law abiding (more likely a part of the solution not cause) and those that relish reading how other Covidiots (likely pandemic cause and not solution) are also being non law abiding and not bothering to wear a surgical mask (specifically designed for a surgeon to wear for hours on end under high pressure concentration without issues as otherwise disastrous consequences for the patient) just for the few minutes to pick up a few groceries without possibly killing anyone doing so. Retail staff who also never and anti mask need to rely less on their health privilege and think about the consequences as a perfect high through put people to people vector as you are physically in close proximity indoors to hundreds/thousands of people daily for hours on end being the perfect vector to facilitate super spreading and mutating. You are possibly scientifically ideal for being the weak link between multiple households to play mutating extra contagious Covid tag roulette. If you end up hospitalised you may finally need to be masked with ventilation but then again given the overwhelmed NHS (with limited ICU ventilation and oxygen etc) you should have the right as a non believer to refuse certain treatments (when difficult limited medical supply decisions needs to made) as your right to refuse a vaccine if offered one.

Only in the UK are people so entitled, selfish and don’t care about fatalities or long Covid! You will never be like this is any other sane nation! Thank goodness for vaccination passports! Keep Covidiots within certain geographies as this in itself is as much a pandemic as the original disease as I trust Covidiot disease is not also super spreading!

Donoteatthekittens · 07/02/2021 19:33

Next it’ll be if you aren’t double / triple masking in shops, you are a granny killer.

Donoteatthekittens · 07/02/2021 19:34

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia - too long, didn’t read.

higgledypiggledyhen · 07/02/2021 19:37

Ah please calm down

Numbers are dropping

People are getting vaccinated now

Masks are not 100% effective anyway

Did the woman cough in your face?

We're almost on the other side

The woman was right. Everyone is struggling. Let's maintain a sense of reality

Laburnam · 07/02/2021 19:41

The royal College of Nursing advice is now to double mask.
Keeping your mask on whilst shopping isn’t really that hard and removing it even for a short time is exposing you to the virus and by touching your mask it’s also potentially contaminated

Donoteatthekittens · 07/02/2021 19:45

Next stop - wrap your entire body in cellophane to pop into the supermarket. 👍🏻

Cherrysherbet · 07/02/2021 19:45

Cherrysherbet But you're wearing a lanyard. I have eyes, if I clock someone wearing one I don't ask, if they're not I do. Simple. The guy in my OP had it under his jumper, I don't have X-ray vision. Some people also have things on their phone that they wave at us as they go past, which is fine by me. I also have colleagues who can't wear them for whatever reason.

Op I understand what you’re saying, I really do, but threads like this really upset me.

It wasn’t long before the pandemic, that all you saw on the internet was ‘it’s ok not to be ok’ and ‘#be kind’. Now all I see is ‘well my sister has chronic asthma and she can still wear one’ or ‘ all non mask wearers are fucking selfish idiots’ etc.....

To all those people.... if YOU can wear one with only minor discomfort, then you are lucky and I envy you. If I could, then I would. It would push me over the edge.

PLEASE BE KIND. I have been accused on this thread of not being ‘nice’. My friends and family would disagree. I am nice to all the customers that grill me for having a mental disorder. I am sick of it. I’ve had enough of these threads that say such nasty things about people they know nothing about.

If the government was good enough to protect people like me, then I could go and get actual proof from my dr......BUT it is IMPOSSIBLE as they have said we DON’T need to show proof. The DR will not give anyone proof!! It’s a catch 22.

They have left us wide open to ABUSE.

Franklyfrost · 07/02/2021 19:46

Well done for saying something. I had to go to the supermarket to pick up a prescription and felt so angry and hopeless and amazed at all those idiots with their noses sticking out. It must be awful to work around such signs of stupidity. You have my sympathies.

Wellthatwassilly · 07/02/2021 19:47

If you have your mask on properly i dont see what the issue is? Just you do you and let them do them

Cherrysherbet · 07/02/2021 19:48

Keeping your mask on whilst shopping isn’t really that hard

FOR YOU! I give up 🤦🏼‍♀️

ktp100 · 07/02/2021 19:50

I'm with you, OP.

Masks are shit (I have glasses & fog up every 10 seconds - so annoying) but that's my tough shit.

It's EVERYONE'S tough shit!!

The way I see it if you want to leave the house and use a service wear a fucking mask properly or leave!

Nobody on a till should be worrying about catching covid and taking it home to their families due to people being too stupid or stubborn to wear a mask properly.

And no I don't mean the exempt, but let's be honest, there are less of them than there are people we see without masks or particularly those wearing masks uneffectively.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 07/02/2021 19:51

I also think op should mind her own business....no good ever comes from challenging strangers...i dont do it to others and would not respond well if it was done to me.
And yes i wear a mask and am happy too...they dont bother me much at all.

ktp100 · 07/02/2021 19:52

And yes, I know it's ineffectively.

Do you work on a till all day though?

She does, so she gets to be pissed off with the amount of customers putting her health at risk.

MrsBobDylan · 07/02/2021 19:53

The should be NO exemptions. Online shop if it's a fucking problem for you.

As for the pp who asked if op had her jab yet if she's vulnerable, lucky you! My ds has type 1 diabetes which makes him much more vulnerable than you with your asthma (statistically so) but won't get a vaccine for months because he is 13.

I don't want to catch Covid from some selfish fuck with their mask hanging underneath their useless conk because I don't want to find out what happens if my vulnerable child gets it.

DenisetheMenace · 07/02/2021 19:55

YANBU. I don’t know how you put up with it day in day out, I couldn’t.
Thanks for doing it.

ManCubsMama · 07/02/2021 19:56

Sorry OP but you need to get a grip, you are not an authority over anyone to tell them what to do. Get on with it like the rest of us.

Graciebobcat · 07/02/2021 19:58

^Also, this exemption thing doesn't exist in France either. There are no lanyards. Everyone has to wear a mask as soon as they leave their front door. I don't know what people are playing at in the UK. I might be wrong, but I've not heard of this happening over here at all. The police hang around in supermarket car parks fining people 150 EUR for not wearing one. There's no messing around.
I remember feeling AWFUL when I first had to wear a mask. It was dreadfully suffocating, but a year later and I'm used to it.^

Fucking hell. Well at least we aren't France.

MrsBlue4 · 07/02/2021 19:59

Since when did supermarket workers have the right to tell people what to do? If you're that anxious then maybe you should lock yourself away!

bigbird1969 · 07/02/2021 20:04

hmm my DH has lung cancer and is exempt from wearing a mask due to his breathing difficulties but he still does. Most folks can manage a mask and for those that say they truly cant then order your food on line and dont shop unless you can wear a mask for a short time. Funny enough i work with people who are autistic and after explaining using social stories and pictures they wear them too.... and those that cant can be added to the vulnerable list and order food online....so i dont have much sympathy for folks who are non mask wearers, who buy there disabled lanyards online and think mask wearers are being difficult..

DenisetheMenace · 07/02/2021 20:06

Since when did supermarket workers have the right to tell people what to do? If you're that anxious then maybe you should lock yourself away!“

Surely “supermarket workers” (patronising, much?) have as much right to a safe workplace as lofty office workers and the like? Had hoped the last year had helped to rid our society of such obnoxious attitudes.

I would be worried too if I had to encounter dozens of stupid people with their mask beneath their nose every day. I don’t have to accept that risk from strangers though because we can work from home. Can you?
