Needing someone to come to the house at 7.30AM, look after a 7 year old and walk 7 year old to school for 8.45AM.
£5 too low, £10 too high?

I've been out of childcare for a very long time after pursing another career path so am unsure what is expected now. I know breakfast clubs and childminders are cheaper but would have thought most people would know that nannies and babysitters would cost more.....

@SuperHighway

One hour and 15 minutes. Obviously £5 and £10 are too low. It should be £11 minimum to meet National minimum wage.
I’d love the NMW to be £11!
ChocolateSantaisthebestkind · 06/02/2021 19:43

£30.00

Ignore whoever is talking about breakfast clubs and childminders. It's apples and oranges.

Childminder has 5 kids - 5*5 = 25 per hour. (Minus exps)

Breakfast club - 10 kids? 20? And what? 3 staff maybe 4? 50-100 per hour before wages?

She knows. She's trying to rip you off. You'd be very unwise to take this on. She's already showing she means to take advantage of you. She wants support she needs to pay for it.
PurBal · 06/02/2021 19:48

I'm in the £20 club. Childminders and breakfast clubs are cheaper because there are multiple kids. For a qualified nanny I'd probably expect to pay more.

QueenOfLabradors · 06/02/2021 19:48

@SequinsAndGlitter

It's actually for me. I've been asked to do it temporarily. I'm unsure what to say as a lot of people are saying 'Breakfast club and childminders only cost £5-6 so that's what you should be charging.'

I was going to suggest more like what most of you have suggested but keep hearing different things. I would like to do it as would like to support the mum but don't want to take advantage of her. I have told her my expectations of pay just now in an email but if she is looking at someone to do it for £5-6 then obviously that is not do-able. Especially with the early start and unsociable hours.

Breakfast club and child-minders both have an economy of scale which isn't available in this scenario - if I was looking after a seven year old DOG in a group setting I'd be billing £15 for this. For group care we have a maximum of four dogs per handler, which is very similar numbers wise to a child-minders maximum capacity.

A childminder will have multiple children for those hours. I think its 5 children thats their maximum under 5 isn't it? So if someone's paying £5ph and that childminder has 5 children, once they've paid their expenses they'll have atleast minimum wage left.

What this person is asking is exploitative. I am angry on your behalf.
If they are a friend and its a favour that helps you both out and you're happy to do it, then great, but if it isn't that way, and you're looking at this as a job, honestly you need to be paid more.

When I was looking into having some wrap around care for DD to be in work:
To be at work when I needed to be there, it would have meant someone arriving at my home by 6:30/7:00 depending on my placement.
I'd need DD taken to school which is 7:30 am.

We worked out that it would be only fair to pay £10 as a flat rate for someone to take on that responsibility, but because of the hours being what they are, we would need to double it to not be taking advantage of that person.

It ultimately put me in a situation where for that time I was at a loss for the first 2 hours of my day, but DD would be taken care of by someone who would gain sufficiently to not just fuck it off because it wasn't worth their while at short notice.

Afternoons were payable at a different rate, but 4 hours of work in normal time seemed a fairer deal.

And in our view and experience, totally acceptable to take into account return time from the school run and pay for it.

Please take into account if they're this miserly to start with, that will be a running theme.

Well yes. You would think, wouldn't you?

You might need to get some sort of insurance too in case anything gets broken or lost on your watch.

Duckberg · 06/02/2021 19:49

No way is she going to get it for £5.

How far would you have to travel to do it?

Invisimamma · 06/02/2021 19:50

£15. They would need to return to your house to collect their car?

QueenOfLabradors · 06/02/2021 19:50

Actually probably I'd quote £25 and not mind being haggled down to £20!

crazylikechocolate · 06/02/2021 19:50

So really it's an 75 mins with child then another 20 mins walk back to collect car so really 1 hour 35 mins that's a good £15 per day , unsociable hours and leaving the person not enough time to go on to other work staring at 9 ?

rawalpindithelabrador · 06/02/2021 19:52

She's the type who'll come back and say, 'But a childminder/breakfast club is only £5'. 'Probably best to use one of those then.'

Don't touch this with a 10-foot barge.

AliceinBunniland · 06/02/2021 19:52

My first thought was £20 but is it a regular thing? If so that would be £100 a week which seems like a lot. So if you were doing it all week you could say £75?

MyGazeboisLeaking · 06/02/2021 19:55

OP,

This is a really difficult job slot to fill, therefore it comes with 'inconvenience' pay. I know because I've had to find before / after schools/ take to school cover over the years.

I'd say £15 per time for this, as it has to be worth your while.

You'll also find you'll get the 'we don't need you today, he's sick, it's INSET day, assembly etc', and then the 'could you have him all day, he's sick, it's INSET day, snow day, ' too.

Duckberg · 06/02/2021 19:58

So, she's thinking it should be the same as breakfast club. The staff at breakfast club aren't getting paid £5 an hour for their time.

MyGazeboisLeaking · 06/02/2021 19:58

@cansu

It depends on lots of things. Most people would want about 15.00 I expect. It is really difficult to find people to do this kind of thing reliably. I would probably expect to pay 20.00 to find someone who is prepared to do it.

Exactly. There's not a lot of quality, reliable choice for this type of job do you'd like to think a reasonable person would pay an attractive rate.

OP - you can also tell the requester that it limits your options for other potential work, hence you needing the right rate.

GameSetMatch · 06/02/2021 19:58

1 hour and 15mins I’d say £11 it’s £8.72 minimum wage plus 15mins.

Porridgeoat · 06/02/2021 20:00

How long is the walk to school?

Porridgeoat · 06/02/2021 20:01

Is the person trained in childcare?

Porridgeoat · 06/02/2021 20:01

Is it just your child? Any other kids?

FuzyWuzyWozABear · 06/02/2021 20:02

You should definitely offer more than £10 however tbh I think you’ll struggle to find someone willing to commit to doing that every day unless you make it worth their while...why not use breakfast club or a childminder?

BadlydoneHelen · 06/02/2021 20:02

My teenager used to get £15 for doing something similar
