c) ending up on the internet
d) being looked at on the internet by ds's teacher who i am convinced is the kind of man who gives his credit card to porn chat rooms.

"attractive ideal"

Lulumama · 02/11/2007 17:43

of course i come into contact with it ! but the only reason i make myself look nice, is for me ! women do objectify men, it is a two way street, granted, it is more common for it to the woman who is objectified.

still don;t see anything wrong with wanting a pic of yourself in your prime

kneehighinnappies · 02/11/2007 17:44

If men don't feel the need to "celebrate their bodies" (whatever that means) then why do women?

Because our (womens) bodies are beautiful, they are albe to sustain life inside them, do you not think that we should celebrate that fact.

Men on the other hand get the bad deal, they have to walk around with their reproductive organs ahnging out all over the place, it is not the most wonderful looking thing to have displayed. Plus many men are self concious and wouldn't want to have themselves displayed like that.

zippitippitoes · 02/11/2007 17:45

surely naked bodies are attractive..and it is quite fun having a picture of yourself

normabutty · 02/11/2007 17:46

The media and advertising also uses attractive men in adverts, it's not just women.

Also I do feel acceptable regardless of how I look.

Do I wear make-up? Well sometimes, usually if I'm going out in an evening because it's part of the fun of getting ready. Do I wear it on a day-to-day basis? No, because I don't feed I need to in order to be accepted.

Perhaps you think that men are hung up on looks but I don't think they are. In fact I think a lot of men prefer a woman who is confident in herself (regardless of whether she fits into the attractive stereotype).

zippitippitoes · 02/11/2007 17:46

it is also interesting...we use lots of expressions in language which reflect how nakedness is revealing ..telling a kind of truth...laying bare the soul etc

kneehighinnappies · 02/11/2007 17:47

I mean even the OP is saying she wants to pose before she gets old and wrinkly which is basically saying that age and wrinkliness is less acceptable.

Everyone one feels different about thier bodies, the OP may feel that when she is old and wrinkly that she may be at her most attractive, but she is not there yet and she wants to hold on to her youth, for a lovely reminder of how beautiful she felt at that moment in her life.

zippitippitoes · 02/11/2007 17:49

she may still pose when she is older and wrinklier..until you get there it seems a long way off..

men posing here

Elizabetth · 02/11/2007 17:50

It's overwhelmingly women and it's overwhelmingly women who are objectified in porn too (a huge industry) apart from the minor gay porn sector.

Look I just put a different point of view because this is an AIBU thread. I don't want to rain on anybody's parade but I'm really amazed that people don't see this stuff. It's right there in front of us. If women feel that bad about the way they look that they spend years being miserable in a society that vaules looks in woman above many other qualities then there's something wrong with society. Is it really something we want to play along with rather than challenge?

kneehighinnappies · 02/11/2007 17:51

What do weight lifters and male models do, they sit there wearing next to nothing, so men Do pose and do like to be looked at, ok it isn't all men but there are some out there who do.

pointydog · 02/11/2007 17:52

ask a local art college if someone would 'do' you for an agreed price?

Elizabetth · 02/11/2007 17:53

Just do a count the next time you are watching TV. The number of fully made-up young beautiful women compared to the number of fully made-up young beautiful men. There will be a big difference.

normabutty · 02/11/2007 17:54

Yes, there is something wrong with a society that values looks above all else. However you seem to blame all that on porn.

From my experience I'd say that the media and advertising industries influence societies views a lot more than the porn industry. In fact I'd say I've seen a lot more people in porn that don't fit into the "attractive ideal" than I have on tv and in advertising.

Elizabetth · 02/11/2007 17:56

I'm just watching TV right now. Estee Lauder ad - make-up for women, Special K ad - slimming for women, Nivea Hand Cream - anti-aging hand treatment aimed at women.

Nothing aimed at how men look though. Apparently they are acceptable just the way the are.

Elizabetth · 02/11/2007 17:57

I don't blame it all on porn, but I think the idea of posing naked for photographs in fishnets and chiffon very likely comes from porn.

normabutty · 02/11/2007 17:59

fishnets and chiffon...now there's an idea...

I thought we were talking about NAKED pictures.

Also the advertising on tv is more likely to be aimed at women as they are the most likely ones to be shopping. I also think women like to treat themselves more, whereas men aren't bothered about relaxing in a nice warm bath with a face mask on...they'd rather watch the footie.

kneehighinnappies · 02/11/2007 18:05

Maybe fishnets and chiffon make some one feel sexy, I know that I like my kneehigh boot's they make me feel sexy, norma likes a shirt and heels
it is about feeling happy with the way you look and feel in yourself, if that is a bad thing then we are all wrong for buying clothes, make up, jewllery I'd even go as far as saying soap or anti dandruff shampoo.

Spagblog · 02/11/2007 18:11

All the people that I have done photography for say that the experience has given them a better feeling of self image and more confidence...Now that can't be a bad thing!

nORAYNonmybonfireplease · 02/11/2007 20:06

Maybe the people who have these pictures done can realise that all the blardy models/actresses/superstars are just good photography and make up and then feel more comfortable about being real??

kellybrook · 02/11/2007 20:13

wow. its a storm on here!
i am really not interested in doing this becuase in some way i need to conform to a male idea of female sexiness, just because i want to, for me, i want to see how nice i looked when i was young (ish), when I am old, when, I may well do it again! i don't think its less acceptable to be old and wrinjly at all, just from where i'm sitting now (aged 26) it'd be a bit weird if i was old and wrinkly looking! i feel happy in myself now, and i want to record it somehow. that is all.

i don't know how anyone could have one of these hung up in their house for all and sundry to see unless they use a drape to semi cover themselves up with.
