Crumpets and Nutella

GreenSlide · 04/02/2021 21:37

I fancy crumpets with Nutella tomorrow, but I can't decide if I should butter them or not. Crumpets without butter feels against nature somehow but butter AND Nutella seems ridiculously indulgent. So WIBU to butter my crumpets before adding Nutella?

Lashings of butter with sea salt, topped with Nutella is crumpet nirvana.

Another good crumpet thing is eggy crumpet, immerse your crumpet completely in beaten egg, then fry gently in butter till golden both sides, serve with a dusting of icing sugar and a spoon of cream or yoghurt.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 05/02/2021 10:51

Butter - moistens the holes and helps whatever you have on top get distributed more evenly,

About the only time I don't use butter is if I'm having melted cheese.
But YABU - you think you want crumpets tomorrow? after reading this thread I NEED crumpets NOW

AubergineDream · 05/02/2021 10:54

One of my children Calls Nutella 'chocolate butter' so I offer butter, peanut butter or chocolate butter now. Or because I don't butter as well with peanut butter or Nutella, whereas with other things like jam or marmite I do

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 05/02/2021 10:56

Eggy crumpets sound good Grin
Never heard of frying crumpets, does anyone else do that?
I did discover quite recently that if the crumpet is a bit hard and not I've just opened the packet, they work better microwaved than heated in the toaster.
How does everyone else cook them?

blindmansbluff · 05/02/2021 10:56

The best crumpet combo is with Bolognese sauce over the top. Amazing!

chilling19 · 05/02/2021 10:58

This thread! 😂

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 05/02/2021 11:02

butter, teeniest smear of marmite, peanut butter.
sometimes with cheese on top of that.

Or like a scone, with clotted cream and jam
(jam on top, obvs)

listsandbudgets · 05/02/2021 11:04

I like laughing cow triangles on crumpet for lunch. Otherwise, they are best with butter and honey or raspberry jam.

2021vision · 05/02/2021 11:07

No Nutella, butter and marmite

IcedLimes · 05/02/2021 11:19

I didn't realise people didn't use butter with nutella. Is it only nutella they don't put butter with or other spreads too. I always have butter melting into the crumpet before putting anything else on. That's what the holes are for

SlopesOff · 05/02/2021 11:20

No butter, just get a couple of tablespoons of palm oil, a couple of sugar and a sachet of nut flavoured fake hot chocolate and mix it together, lob it on to crumpets. Job done.

strawberriesontheNeva · 05/02/2021 13:32

No butter .

LadyCatStark · 05/02/2021 13:39

Crumpets with Nutella are the best thing ever! No butter required, just put extra Nutella on of it’s too dry 😂

BigPaperBag · 05/02/2021 13:41

No butter required. However, what is even better is crumpets, Nutella and crunchy peanut butter (in that order) So yummy! Works well on seeded bread too.

stackemhigh · 05/02/2021 13:58

Forget Nutella, there was a lot of debate on how to pronounce AIBU.

Most people pronounce it Eye-Bu, but I felt vindicated when MN released the AIBU podcast and the hosts both pronounced it EH-BU.

LakieLady · 05/02/2021 14:09

@50shadesoflunacy

You're all bastards Grin I want crumpets now with butter and golden syrup followed by crumpets with Biscoff
I want crumpets with Biscoff now, too. Is it an essential purchase? Would I be breaching Covid restrictions by going and buying some?

I can also recommend crumpets with butter and Seriously Strong cheese spread. Or Taleggio, if you have some handy. Crunchy peanut butter is good on crumpets, too, as is any jam or marmalade.

The only things that don't really work on crumpets imo are lemon curd, tapenade and chocolate spread (separately - together they would be unspeakably vile!) and I'm now wondering if pate on a crumpet might be nice...

I think I'm going

TheFuckingDogs · 05/02/2021 14:09

Definitely both! Go the whole hog!

Mia1415 · 05/02/2021 14:14

Bang goes my diet!

Beetlewing · 05/02/2021 16:44

Both. Salted butter and Nutella. Trust me

billy1966 · 05/02/2021 17:42

I had weaned myself off these, am salivating at the thought of them.

I have only had Tesco ones, they seem very processed, but they are just divine.

I like the butter/marmite/peanut butter/melting cheese idea...

GreenSlide · 05/02/2021 17:56

I went for butter and Nutella in the end. It was amazing. The Nutella filled all the little holes. Would definitely recommend.

I had warburtons Crumpets for lunch- they arent my fave as they are a little claggy- but that's all our little coop sells. I find the cheaper the crumpet the better. The sour dough ooh lala deluxe ones don't crisp up enough. I like mine singed around the edge.

Topping - always butter. Then one savory- seriously strong cheese spread and one sweet- current fave blood orange curd but usually jam. Husband has no butter but marmite as the savoury

MandalaYogaTapestry · 05/02/2021 23:09

Butter, always butter. It's one of the simplest and yet tastiest things ever

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 20/02/2021 07:50

not quite a zombie thread! I finally tried out eggy crumpet - had to come back and say how good it was Grin
