Just that really. I’ve just been sent an email from change.org asking me to sign a petition to push for a state funeral for him.
Now don’t get me wrong he was a remarkable man and an inspiration... but a state funeral? That will cost us, the taxpayer money we definitely cannot afford in the currant climate. Also I’m sure he’d rather the money go where it’s needed.

Carol voderman suggested a stone in Westminster abby and I've heard of a statute in trafalgar Square, both or either seem fitting to me.

But not... A state funeral!!

Twistered · 03/02/2021 18:39

Great man as he was but I agree with you. And I think his family have said he wouldn't have wanted a big fuss

enjoyingscience · 03/02/2021 18:39

Definitely not.

Toddlerteaplease · 03/02/2021 18:40

No he absolutely does not warrant a state funeral. Winston Churchill was the last non royal to have one. And he really was a national hero. Captain Tom will be forgotten in a few weeks. His family may want a private one any way.

FoxyTheFox · 03/02/2021 18:41

I mean this with no disrespect to Captain Tom or his family but Christ on a bike, where will it end!? They should be left in peace to mourn his passing not shoved into the pomp and circumstance of a state funeral.

louisejxxx · 03/02/2021 18:41

I agree - definitely not suitable given the throngs that would likely ensue on to the streets as a result.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 03/02/2021 18:41

Please no.

Toddlerteaplease · 03/02/2021 18:41

I also don't think a statue is warranted either. Maybe one in his home town. But not one in London's

Daydreamsinglorioustechnicolor · 03/02/2021 18:41

I think people need to leave it to his family. At the end of the day he was a normal family man. Yes, inspirational and someone to be admired and missed. But let's not invade the family's privacy and make it all about us.

YanTanTethera123 · 03/02/2021 18:42

Bloody ridiculous idea.
He seems to have been a modest man, shunning the limelight. Who on earth thought this was a good idea?

Duckberg · 03/02/2021 18:42

Hahahaha. For fuck sake.

SallyLovesCheese · 03/02/2021 18:43

I agree. He was a man who wanted to make a difference and was recognised for that by us all. I am sorry he died. He lived a full and long life.

But there is no state funeral for the other people who have raised lots for charity in their lives, with our without illness or disability, no state funeral for those who have died from Covid who had years and years of life left they could have had.

I suppose it may sound hard, but I think there are better ways of honouring him if people wish to.

DareIask · 03/02/2021 18:43

No

This is turning in to a circus that will just detract from the effort he made.

Leave it to the family now.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 03/02/2021 18:43

NO to any more threads about Tom Moore on Mumsnet. Enough already!

MsFogi · 03/02/2021 18:44

FFS the country's finances are in tatters already without paying for a state funeral/memorial etc etc.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 03/02/2021 18:44

You're fucking kidding me. I mean, he had a long and doubtless interesting life, he made a great impression on a lot of people and it's sad that he's passed away with COVID-19, but this is getting out of hand now... What's next, a petition for a sainthood?!

DogsSausages · 03/02/2021 18:45

No of course not. He inspired people to raise or donate money at a time when people needed hope. A plaque maybe but not a statue or state funeral.

majesticallyawkward · 03/02/2021 18:45

Christ no! I mean, he did a good thing raising the money and appears to have been a nice man... but a state funeral on top of all the other ott virtue signalling bs, like tonight's national clap 🤦‍♀️, is just too much. Can we just stop with this sickening hero workshopping now?

Godimabitch · 03/02/2021 18:45

He was a lovely man but I dont think any taxpayer money should be spent on a funeral or statue or anything. If people want to raise money and choose to donate I'm all for that. But we dont really have a lot of money in the pot atm and there are more important things to spend it on unfortunately.

ParkheadParadise · 03/02/2021 18:46

He should have the same funeral as everyone else has to have that has died during lockdown.

welliguessitwouldbenice · 03/02/2021 18:46

He seems to have been a modest man, shunning the limelight

Is this said with irony?!

Topseyt · 03/02/2021 18:49

I don’t think anyone should be petitioning for any particular type of funeral. His family should be left in peace to organise whatever type of funeral they deem would be most appropriate for him.

He may even have set out his own wishes and preferences to them and I highly doubt that a state funeral will be amongst them.

So no to the state funeral idea from me. Surely it would be very intrusive for a grieving family anyway.

JohnMiddleNameRedactedSwanson · 03/02/2021 18:50

The last state funeral was for Churchill. The next one will be for the Queen. The QM, Diana, and Thatcher did not get one.

Regardless, I can’t see his family going for it. They seem like sensible, private people.

SirHonkers · 03/02/2021 18:51

State funerals are only given after the death of a reigning monarch or a person of monumental national importance. The last one was in 1965, for Sir Winston Churchill.

It's not going to happen.

ImFree2doasiwant · 03/02/2021 18:51

How does a state funeral work in the midst of a global pandemic?
