Do you think one is more posh to say than the other?
If so,
YABU living room is more posh
YANBU lounge is more posh

My DGM insisted only public houses have lounges.

omtotheg · 05/02/2021 01:29

We say sitting room for the room with sofas used every day and lounge for the sitting room that's a 'good room'

Don't think it's posh (as we aren't) it's just a way to differentiate between both sitting rooms in our house.

I noticed that the signs at Gatwick Airport use "toilet", so I think it's OK to use that word.

'(I agree that "toilet" has the class-associations you claim, I'm just saying that people who want to see themselves more as citizens of the world than little-Englanders need to get past that.)'

^^
Spot on! 👏

They are neither of them posh at all.

My front room with sofas chairs, TV, also has the dining table in it.

The back room also has sofas, chairs and a TV and would be called the family room in Australia, where I am.

So front and back rooms it is for me. Neither is posh.

We say sitting room or lounge

Norwayreally · 05/02/2021 06:07

I say living room. My Gran has a room she refers to as the ‘parlour’, she keeps it locked and only lets ‘important’ people in there because it’s almost all cream and is filled with her lladro collection...

Ginfordinner · 05/02/2021 08:07

My German born, English as a second language, mother used to say lounge.

merryhouse · 05/02/2021 13:20

Of course, if you want to be really posh you could call it the Blue Saloon

[misplaced accusations of Shock americanisms in 3...2...1...]

I have a living room where we have big comfy sofas and a TV, somewhere to really relax, and a sitting room, a smaller room with no TV and more structured sofas, a more 'formal' room than the living room, somewhere to sit with friends and chat over a cup of coffee (or Wine) with no TV to distract us

TwoZeroTwoZero · 07/02/2021 13:33

Living room. Or just t' room, as in, "I'm off to sit in t' room," although the t isn't sounded. All the other rooms are just "the other rooms".

I'm not posh.
