Lounge or living room?

Sunshineonarainydayy · 02/02/2021 20:44

Do you think one is more posh to say than the other?
If so,
YABU living room is more posh
YANBU lounge is more posh

Lounge, living room, sitting room, drawing room - in order of ascending poshness. My grandparents (not posh) had a “front room” - which they hardly ever used.

TheHumanSatsuma · 02/02/2021 21:06

Anything but lounge!

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 02/02/2021 21:09

What about parlour?
We use front room (even though its at the back), lounge and sitting room.

Pellewsmate · 02/02/2021 21:10

This is a lounge singer.

Lounge or living room?
Tehmina23 · 02/02/2021 21:10

I just say lounge as it's easy

ALbigbump · 02/02/2021 21:11

It was always front room growing up in our house, think it might be a South Wales thing though

CherryRoulade · 02/02/2021 21:11

Never lounge. That is something people do on sun beds.
We live in all our rooms.

Drawing room and morning room are very specific and rooms with an accepted purpose. Usually only in really quite grand houses.

For most of us, it’s sitting room. Maybe summer and winter sitting rooms, maybe sitting room and snug.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 02/02/2021 21:11

Front room here.

JillsFlapjacks · 02/02/2021 21:11

Lounge reminds me of big puffy leather sofas, 1990s wallpapers and/or swirly carpets.

BilboBercow · 02/02/2021 21:13

I say living room but I'm common as muck. If I heard anyone refer to their living room as the "drawing room" I'd piss myself

Fifthtimelucky · 02/02/2021 21:13

Sitting room for me.

daisypond · 02/02/2021 21:13

Front room was the usual term for my grandparents and friends in Newcastle.

MillieEpple · 02/02/2021 21:13

we use them interchangeably - ours is living room/ lounge / front room

JaceLancs · 02/02/2021 21:14

Sitting room or front room here

Slippy78 · 02/02/2021 21:15

Neither of those terms are posh.

Ohyesiam · 02/02/2021 21:15

My mother is a snob and always told me lounge was common.
I say sitting room.

Yugi · 02/02/2021 21:16

Scrolled quite a way to see if parlour had been mentioned.

This was considered posh where I grew up but then I was right common 😂

MustardMitt · 02/02/2021 21:16

Dunno which one is posher. Don’t really care.

I use lounge, living room and front room depending on my mood. Probably front room the most. Ours is at the front but most people I know it isn’t!

PlanDeRaccordement · 02/02/2021 21:17

I think living room is an American term. They all use that over there.

AfternoonToffee · 02/02/2021 21:17

@Justkeeprollingalong

We call it the front room, even in houses where the said room isn't in the front of the house! I think it's a North East thing.
My Mom and Dad have a front and back, S.Yorks / Midlands, so not sure who it comes from.

Sitting room is local dialect, I think, especially in working class areas with "2 up, 2 down" houses - so you have a back kitchen and a sitting room. The latter being for high days and holidays.

ParkheadParadise · 02/02/2021 21:17

Living room with the big light on.

tummyaches · 02/02/2021 21:18

Lounge goes with pardon, settee, dessert and toilet. The exact opposite of posh

user1471530109 · 02/02/2021 21:18

Grin this has come up before on here. I've reached over a decade Shock. I few up saying lounge. DM is wannabe posh but v far from it. We all say living room now. But when I remember I try to say sitting room Blush

user1471530109 · 02/02/2021 21:18

I grew up. Doh

Takemetothebar · 02/02/2021 21:20

@MyNameForToday1980 and @tummyaches

Both of you are completely correct!

All those words are hideous and try hard. Settee and lounge are top of the worst!!

Sitting room, or drawing room if it doesn’t have a television. Morning room if it is very bright and you write in there.
