AIBU to put HP sauce in a cottage pie?

Yes, this is real. And I do it with a shepherd's pie too!

I use no packet mixes... not even a granule of Bisto or anything! Make my own stock, mash my own potatoes, chop my own vegetables. It takes me effing HOURS.

But, the one thing I do like is just a couple of spoons of HP in the mix. Is that so criminal???

Had the afternoon off work, which means plenty of me time, such as: scrubbing bathroom; changing beds; cleaning kitchen etc. You know. Also thought I might make a cottage pie.

DH shuffles in after logging off, tastes it, pulls face, announces he can taste "nothing but brown sauce" and fucks off upstairs to sulk. Says people don't do it.

He's acting like I pooed in the pot.

I'm not changing my ways. I will live and die by a bit of HP in my cottage pie.

But... AIBU?

Sounds nice to me!

I’m going to try this! My secret ingredient to lasagne is tomato ketchup, family and friends always tells me how tasty it is 🤣

Most mince beef dishes needs a bit of flavor added (though lamb is tasty enough as it is so I’ll ignore that you put it in shepherds pies) and say YANBU

LubaLuca · 02/02/2021 17:23

It's fine, HP is really tasty. I put Henderson's Relish in mine though - nothing beats it for adding a bit of savoury tang to dishes.

MagnoliaBeige · 02/02/2021 17:23

Sounds nice! I put Worcester sauce in mine, that’s lovely too and not dis-similar to HP sauce

RozHuntleysStump · 02/02/2021 17:24

I also use Worcester sauce.

user1493413286 · 02/02/2021 17:25

I do this; we always did growing up too

SoupDragon · 02/02/2021 17:25

I hate HP sauce so it depends if you can taste it.

I made a recipe for shepherds/cottage pie once that called for marmite - it was rank and all I could taste was marmite.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 02/02/2021 17:27

Absolutely fine.

I put lea & perrins in mine.

Woodlandbelle · 02/02/2021 17:28

Don't cook for him again... For a long long time

spanieleyes · 02/02/2021 17:28

I put Branston Pickle in mine!

SFHJ · 02/02/2021 17:29

Got to have broon sauce in there. Criminal not to!

goldpendant · 02/02/2021 17:29

I put ketchup on mine. Yum. YANBU

Northofsomewhere · 02/02/2021 17:30

Yep, we use HP and so did my mum and nan. I probably use a bit much for some people but I like the flavour it gives. Clearly husband should be left to cook his own shepherds/cottage pies from scratch in the future - or take his portion out before adding any hp and make a slightly subpar mini version. Also leave his portion in the microwave for later, once he's really hungry I bet he'll not complain.

Ihatesandwiches · 02/02/2021 17:30

I like HP sauce and would add it but don't, because the other people eating it don't. I add garlic, lea and perrins and a good squeeze of tomato puree.
You're not unreasonable to like it, but unreasonable to expect others to eat it.

muddyford · 02/02/2021 17:30

You are not being unreasonable. My mother's wonderful cottage pie recipe, which I always use, has half a teaspoon of Marmite in it, which adds a gorgeous savoury note.

334bu · 02/02/2021 17:30

Lots of Worcester sauce for me. I even put it in my Bolognese and Chilli con carneBlush

Pukkatea · 02/02/2021 17:31

Sounds like it would have a similar effect to Worcestershire sauce, which I add to many mince based dishes. He can cook his own cottage pie then can't he?

1Morewineplease · 02/02/2021 17:31

Worcester sauce and a squeeze of tomato purée or ketchup.

Frouby · 02/02/2021 17:32

I use Hendersons in it. Then serve with baked beans and HP sauce, slice of bread and butter. Sometimes I serve with green veg but my favourite is definitely beans and brown sauce. Especially if its a left over portion and its the next day and lunchtime and no one is home to see my gluttony Grin.

CSIblonde · 02/02/2021 17:33

It's much nicer if you slaver it with HP when eating it! I get thru bottles of it.

tenredthings · 02/02/2021 17:33

Worcester sauce all the way !

mum11970 · 02/02/2021 17:34

I’m eating cottage pie as I read this. I put Worcestershire sauce in mine.

APurpleSquirrel · 02/02/2021 17:36

YANBU to like it that way, but your DH is NBU to dislike it.
Have you made it that way before & he's eaten it? Or is this the first time?

thenewduchessofhastings · 02/02/2021 17:36

I put baked beans, beef stock,Worcestershire sauce and a pinch of black pepper into mine along with the mince, carrots, onions and peas.

DartmoorChef · 02/02/2021 17:38

Just add it for yourself afterwards.
