AIBU to put HP sauce in a cottage pie?

OmicronPersei7 · 02/02/2021 17:16

Yes, this is real. And I do it with a shepherd's pie too!

I use no packet mixes... not even a granule of Bisto or anything! Make my own stock, mash my own potatoes, chop my own vegetables. It takes me effing HOURS.

But, the one thing I do like is just a couple of spoons of HP in the mix. Is that so criminal???

Had the afternoon off work, which means plenty of me time, such as: scrubbing bathroom; changing beds; cleaning kitchen etc. You know. Also thought I might make a cottage pie.

DH shuffles in after logging off, tastes it, pulls face, announces he can taste "nothing but brown sauce" and fucks off upstairs to sulk. Says people don't do it.

He's acting like I pooed in the pot.

I'm not changing my ways. I will live and die by a bit of HP in my cottage pie.

But... AIBU?

Very unreasonable. Brown sauce is horrid.

ineedanewbum · 02/02/2021 18:35

I use a mix of brown and red sauce. Yum. It's how my mam always did it so has carried on. No complaints in my house.🤷‍♀️

user1471505494 · 02/02/2021 18:36

I use HP Fruity sauce, marmite and lee & Perkins. The secret is not too much

sadpapercourtesan · 02/02/2021 18:36

YABU to put brown sauce in cottage pie, that's just weird.

Your DH's rude entitled attitude is a much bigger problem though.

Twinmama32 · 02/02/2021 18:40

Worcestershire sauce and baked beans in mine. Definitely going to try hp too next time!

Lovelydiscusfish · 02/02/2021 18:42

Your husband should not be so rude! If someone is kind enough to cook you something, in my book you fucking eat it and say thank you, even if it isn’t precisely to your taste.

I’ve never made a cottage pie, but HP is the sort of thing I would use in one, yes.

Tangledtresses · 02/02/2021 18:46

Hp has tamarind in it which I love! And it's goes very well with beef so is say yes to that 😀

I put dark soy in gravy as a browning and flavour agent along with a bit of jam

Shhhh don't tell everyone

welliguessitwouldbenice · 02/02/2021 18:46

@LadyOfTheCanyon, a fellow Samin fan? 😋

00deed1988 · 02/02/2021 18:48

YANBU. It is the so good in there. 1st time my DH saw me doing it he was confused. But after tasting it he was converted!

TheCanyon · 02/02/2021 18:48

I always out Brown sauce gravy, doesn't taste right without it and I'm not really a fan.

SpudsandGravy · 02/02/2021 18:48

Put what you like in your cottage pie :-) I put Brussels sprouts in almost everything, because I like them.

If DH doesn't like the taste, though, then it may be he won't want to eat it. Maybe reduce the quantity or add it to yours afterwards?

Pascha · 02/02/2021 18:50

I've just eaten cottage pie with chilli sauce liberally spread over it. I should think hp sauce would be lovely. As a dip thoigj, not mixed in.

Gorbie · 02/02/2021 18:53

My shepards pie ingredients are, mince, 1 onion, spoonfuls of tomato puree, beef stock pot, Worcestershire sauce and hp sauce! Then cheesey mash on top!

NovemberR · 02/02/2021 18:55

I put either HP or Hendersons in it. Gives it a bit of flavour.

Your DH is daft. He might not like it, but I think lots of people add extra sauce or spice to things.

I've been known to add a bit of BBQ sauce..

VinylDetective · 02/02/2021 19:00

I do it too.

Kottbullar · 02/02/2021 19:02

I use marmite and Worcestershire sauce. I can't get passed the smell of brown sauce to eat it.

OmicronPersei7 · 02/02/2021 19:20

Mine is: Mince; Diced onion; Diced celery; Tomato purée (or, my homemade passata if I have any knocking around after a pizza night); Peas; Stock made from any bones I've saved from the roast on Sunday and any veggie off cuts I've saved from whenever; Worcester sauce - just a dibble; HP SAUCE, BITCHES!!!!

I have always made it this way and he's never said anything but "delicious". He spotted me add the HP last time and kicked off. Because he's a baby and doesn't like HP.

The taste is definitely not overwhelming! I add a bacon-sandwich-worth-of-squirt.

Is that a measurement? I reckon Jamie Oliver would say it is. Pukka.

This thread blew up Grin Happy to be validated! Ho ho. [/quote]
Hah, he hasn't got a leg to stand on then! He can eat it or go hungry, bonus points for serving it up twice a week 😂

VestaTilley · 02/02/2021 19:37

YANBU! Sounds delicious.

Your DP is lucky to have you. Hope you told him he could cook his own dinner in future.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 02/02/2021 19:41

make a BIG song and dance about running out of HP, weep and wail that you cannot find any in the supermarket, bemoan the major difference in your cottage pie

carry on as usual and he'll not know the difference, it's all in the mind.

My dad hated yogurt...GONE OFF MILK, why would you eat that muck?
Cream cheese...not for him, but why for the love of god would you put it in a pudding.
Whipped cream....too fatty, not for me

Homemade cheesecake....yes please, I'll have a large slice.

No wonder my mother kept him out of the kitchen!!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 02/02/2021 19:59

Definitely reaching for the Hendos here, too!!

OmicronPersei7 · 02/02/2021 20:29

Update: he ate the pie and said it was "the best he'd ever tasted"

He was overdoing it a bit, but it worked on my fragile ego.

I've added brown sauce before, it's lovely. To take it to another level a squirt of chilli is required.

Ha! I had to look Samin up, never heard of her but she looks great! Jamie Oliver said something along those lines and as a rule it usually works when tweaking a meal.

MrsClatterbuck · 02/02/2021 21:38

I use Worcester sauce and mushroom ketchup plus Guinness. Also I buy chopped onions from the supermarket and those bags of diced carrots and swedes. Life is too short to dice turnips plus it can be dangerous. But I do use bisto to thicken it.
