He did more in his last year than most of us manage in a lifetime.

Truly a life well lived.

No matter his age his life was prematurely cut short by coronavirus which is tragic

Ah come on now, there's a respectful RIP and then there's silliness. It's not tragic in any sense, and you can't possibly say someone who was almost 101 years old had their life cut short. Especially as it was pneumonia that hospitalised him and would likely have killed him anyway.

Mawkishness is not respectful, or useful.

HappygoesLucy

Why do you think a thread regarding an elderly man's death is the right place to lay blame and guilt?

CantBeAssed · 02/02/2021 17:12

@happygoeslucy..
Not really living up to your usernameWink
Dont think too many of the "12000 100yr olds in the UK" would be as mobile as captain tom, so dont fret about them getting together to venture out with the sole purpose of sneezing on nurses....

Cornetttttto · 02/02/2021 17:12

I think a nation wide tribute clap would be lovely.

TokyoSashimi · 02/02/2021 17:13

I feel terribly sad.

@Cornetttttto

I think a nation wide tribute clap would be lovely.
I ike that idea.

@justasking111

I am glad he went to Barbados and felt the sun on his face for the last time. He did a lot of good raising the money. Bless him.
Absolutely
TokyoSashimi · 02/02/2021 17:17

@WhatKatyDidNxt

Totally gutted. I rarely cry but this has got to me. What an amazing life and an inspiration. They don’t make them like that anymore.
I have also had a cry. it feels like such a symbolic loss.

I would love to think that people could be respectful towards his family and not start slinging mud.

SoupDragon · 02/02/2021 17:18

@HappygoesLucy maybe stop posting before you make yourself look even worse than you have already.

CantBeAssed · 02/02/2021 17:19

@happygoeslucy
And just when i thought you couldn't go any lower..what a disgusting thing to sayAngry

Pandamumium · 02/02/2021 17:20

RIP Captain Tom. You were a beacon of light for the whole country. I loved listening to you speak.

Condolences to your whole family.

Dutchesss · 02/02/2021 17:20

He had an amazing last year of his life, knighted, 150,000 birthday cards. It seems like he wasn't suffering for long, which is good.

I don't feel sad, I'm happy for the life he had, 100 years in itself if quite an achievement.

Spidey66 · 02/02/2021 17:22

Bless him. He had a good long life and will be remembered with affection.

Lorieandrews · 02/02/2021 17:22

@HappygoesLucy. I’d do it if I was 100!

Didn’t someone like the morning bloke pay for him to go?

MichaelMumsnet · 02/02/2021 17:24

Hi all, and thanks for the reports. We've banned the returning troll now.
Hopefully we can have some peace and love on the thread.

WagnerTheWehrWolf · 02/02/2021 17:25

Lived till a very good age, had all his faculties, seemed to enjoy life, and had a very exciting final year.

A good innings and I'm sure lots of people would hope for the same.

TheQueef · 02/02/2021 17:26

I think he got a free holiday to cross off one of his bucket list items and meet his cricket hero Lorie
So glad he fit it in.

Watchingbehindmyhands · 02/02/2021 17:34

This has made me cry this afternoon. Thoughts with the family and friends. A true gentleman with a wonderful heart who came into the public eye when we needed a hero.
