To not find Sex and the City actually that 'problematic'?

It seems to be in vogue to take shows like Friends and SATC, and decide they're problematic by today's standards.

Currently rewatching season 1 of SATC, and have noticed nothing especially bad.

What's all the fuss about?

There isn't a problem ,it's dated but it started over 20 years ago .

whyorwellmatters · 02/02/2021 16:05

Yes I suppose it's slightly dated, but I wouldn't call it 'problematic'

x2boys · 02/02/2021 16:07

No neither would I but people look to take offense everywhere these days .

Fembot123 · 02/02/2021 16:07

I used to LOVE that programme, I heard they were making another series but without Samantha. I’m not sure about it, it just won’t be the same.

LawnFever · 02/02/2021 16:08

I never thought it was that good to start with Grin

I can't wait! Hope it's not too different

The episode where Samatha dates a black man is pretty awful, but it was bad at the time too I think. The bisexuality themed one with Alanis Morisette is very dated. Carrie Bradshaw is the most straight laced sex columnist ever...

DynamoKev · 02/02/2021 16:12

The film SATC 2 is masterpiece of offensive shit.

KevinTheBird · 02/02/2021 16:13

I don’t see it as problematic. It’s annoying though in that the main character who you’re supposed to relate to is the most narcissistic bimbo ever created. It wasn’t until I rewatched it a couple of years ago that I realised what an awful person she was.

JimmyTheBrave · 02/02/2021 16:13

I mean it doesn't show people choking each other during sex which apparently is the norm in porn these days so if anything SATC is something we should be promoting to the youth of today.

westendgirl780 · 02/02/2021 16:14

Yes that is true about the second film you can’t believe what you are watching most of the time it’s so awful.

Xyzzzzz · 02/02/2021 16:16

I think it’s just dated. Like anything over time. I still enjoy watching it though. It was a product of that time.

Yes, that was unbelievable.

I don't have a huge problem with the rest of it, though. They were supposed to be flawed and messy. It's only because they were female characters aimed at a female audience that people think they should be moral role models. Nobody gives a shit about James Bond being an arsehole.

Haven't really noticed yet. Still in season 1

Yeah I remember they have that whole conversation about how bisexual men don't exist and they're all secretly gay. What did they say? "A layover on the way to gaytown" and that we should "pick a side and stay there"
It put me off rewatching any more.

Fatfunt · 02/02/2021 16:17

I think when we have a problem with the lead characters, it just goes to show how well the writers and actors made them so real-life like and not these perfect people with perfect responses for their perfect friends, perfect problems 😂

The film SATC 2 is masterpiece of offensive shit.
It is but everyone thought that at the time. It hasn't been revisited and analysed by today's standards. It was always offensive and best ignored.

I agree with you OP.

I think the conspicuous consumption feels a bit ‘off’ now. Different times.

I know what you mean, but it was in part exploring women having their own money as a norm and what they liked spending it on. Carrie did sort of learn a lesson on that, even if Charlotte bailed her out in the end. Plus I just enjoyed seeing the clothes.
freddiesmoustache · 02/02/2021 16:22

Google Woke Charlotte Grin

See i think, if anything conspicuous consumption is far worse what with The Kardashians and "influencers" constantly on luxurious long haul holidays and flogging make up and bikinis.
x2boys · 02/02/2021 16:24

I'm not sure it would work I used to watch it because I was young a single at the time meeting men ,it resonated with me ,they will all be in their mid 50,s at least now

TheKeatingFive · 02/02/2021 16:24

Yeah absolutely. It felt very liberating at the time.

Views have moved on now though.

I remember very powerfully what an impact it had at the time. My 20 year old self was blown away.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 02/02/2021 16:25

People love to be offended. No problem with SATC.
