Quirky things about where you live

I have discovered, quite accidentally, that I live in a recently designated Market Town. I love this! We have one market stall, on a Saturday. It sells trousers. Sometimes, it sells plants. Sometimes it sells tartan stuff. On Thursday, but might be Tuesday, it sells fish. Sometimes, none of the above is true.
We're a Market Town now!! Do not be messing with me, I've developed webbed feet

Umm...I live near the location of 'the dig' not overly exciting 😁

WhenPushComesToShove · 02/02/2021 14:27

@BikeRunSki Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch ?

@whoamongstus

We have a collection of 'wild' (released, but years ago) parakeets in our town and every now and then you get a glimpse of them in a tree. Always fun when someone who doesn't know posts in the local Facebook group like '...er, am I imagining things?'.
I was coming on to say parakeets! Not sure if we are in the same place - the local story is that a flock were used for filming something at a nearby film studio and they either escaped or were released. I always forget that it is unusual to have parakeets in your back garden and my mother was like, ‘wait ... what??!!” when she first saw them.
ThatIsNotMyUsername · 02/02/2021 14:30

Oh yes we have parakeets. Used to be nice to see the flash of green... now it’s obviously on the tourist trail and there are loads of them (and they are bigger than they used to be). Crowds of people feeding them, blocking off the paths and bird poo all over the place!

@SimonJT

The building I live in is an old printworks and it was used a safe store for textiles that belonged to the British museum. There are photos of what is now one of the groundfloor flats in the museum.

The flat that Ciara Porter lives in in Strike is one if the flats in our building. Our building also has fairly regularly been in magazines, newspapers and TV as we have a famous resident.

Hercule Poirot?
@Coffee2sugars, I live in the village that no one can ever pronounce!!
And I live near the big park with the famous statues!

@ZackaryQuack

I live in a city that has its own dance routine called the "Bull and Dolphin shuffle" named after the pub it started in. Whenever Len Boone - Love Won't Be Denied is played everyone in the building does it.... you go anywhere else in the country and no one knows the dance!!!
You have just solve a mystery that has confounded me for over a decade!

Years ago my work friend asked me to go with her to a wedding of one of her uni friends - party was in a different part of the UK to where we live. At one point in the night a song was played that neither of us had ever heard and literally every other woman (aged 10 - 90) and a handful of men got up to the dance floor and started doing the same dance.

We asked our taxi driver about it on our way back to the hotel and he claimed to have no idea what we were talking about and every now and again it will flit into my mind and I will kick myself that I did not ask one of the people at the party.

Thank you!

Sometimes I can hear lions roar

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 02/02/2021 15:32

Sorry, that was my tummy 🤣

Piranesio · 02/02/2021 15:39

My town is where the first jelly baby comes from. They were known as "unclaimed babies" back then as a reference to all the babies abandoned at workhouses / churches. Dark!

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 02/02/2021 15:42

That’s horrible!

Twernip · 02/02/2021 16:01

The place I live is known locally for being the site of treacle mines, the stuff of legend. Grin

Ballbagisnotmyname · 02/02/2021 16:08

@manteo would love to know which beach! My 10yr old daughter has been beach hunting in Dorset desperately trying to find one - apparently buying one off eBay isn’t good enough 😂😂

I follow someone on Strava who often runs around the "treacle mines of Cock O'Dobby"
FloatOn · 02/02/2021 16:15

@IHaveBrilloHair we had killer whales in our local lough last year!

Nonamesavail · 02/02/2021 16:21

Sorry just re read lol

Spidey66 · 02/02/2021 16:25

I live within 10 minutes walking distance of the TV transmitter that first broadcast the BBC to the nation.

fairydustandpixies · 02/02/2021 16:32

I live somewhere that whenever you walk along a north facing beach, you will find dozens of prehistoric flint tools - loads of them, every time! I'm getting quite a collection...

allfurcoatnoknickers · 02/02/2021 16:33

I live on the block with the biggest income disparity in the entire United States.

I also live round the corner from the strip club where "Hustlers" was set. Said strip club now shares a wall with a building where the cheapest apartments start at $1.5m for a one bed.

If you head east or about 10 minutes you'll pass the building where Sid stabbed stabbed Nancy and walk south for 5 and you'll pass the house where "A visit from St Nicholas" was written.

it's def a...diverse area.

fairydustandpixies · 02/02/2021 16:34

@Manteo I think I may live opposite your beach on the other side of the water - I always found shark teeth there before I moved!

mrbensbaker · 02/02/2021 16:36

@Toddlerteaplease

We have a huge network of caves.
Nottingham or Chislehurst?
Ballbagisnotmyname · 02/02/2021 16:36

@nonamesavail I’m in Worcestershire but patiently waiting for lockdown to be lifted so I can spend my weekends trawling the Dorset coast for the elusive megalodon shark tooth! 😂😂

Have you been to the beach at Dudley?

DialSquare · 02/02/2021 16:41

I live fairly close to the longest pleasure pier in the world and a WW2 shipwreck containing 1400 tonnes of explosives.
