Quirky things about where you live

I have discovered, quite accidentally, that I live in a recently designated Market Town. I love this! We have one market stall, on a Saturday. It sells trousers. Sometimes, it sells plants. Sometimes it sells tartan stuff. On Thursday, but might be Tuesday, it sells fish. Sometimes, none of the above is true.
We're a Market Town now!! Do not be messing with me, I've developed webbed feet
@SimonJT do you mean that bizarre thing in the shopping centre? I only moved her about 18months ago, and most of that has been Lockdown, so I don't know the town that well.
Yes, the weirdest clock I have ever seen. It also took me a while to twig that the lights on the entrance to the store are a nod to Newton and not a weirdly placed pride symbol.

In another of my favourite places in the UK, there are two very large, impressive public lion sculptures that nobody can normally actually see, as the original railway bridge they they stood either side of was replaced some time ago at a significantly higher elevation.

We've had this, and another thread, brought to our attention as potentially allowing people to identify where Mumsnetters live. Do be wary before giving too much away, and let us know by reporting your own comment if you have had second thoughts about your post.

When the danish navy destroyed their fleet to stop the nazis getting their hands on it the resistance started a rumour that there was a second fleet in our village - which is in the middle of mainland Denmark. The nazis came streaming to the village and found a duckpond with a row boat. This duck pond is now called as the war harbour.

The farmers in my area all believe that teachers earn vast fortunes. And they always seem to collect margarine tubs. Not sure if these are universal farmer traits, or specific to my area.

Hello @Fineanddandylion, I’m from a village nearby famous for soup and jam! I agree it’s a hideous sculpture!

That was supposed to be a quote from a poster saying that Hitler's favourite place was their home town!
Slightlyunhinged · 05/02/2021 00:23

@longwayoff do you live in Somerset?

dinosaurcookie · 05/02/2021 00:41

@hadtojoin... been there many many times but didn't know about the bank and hadn't really thought about the streams at the side of the road or where they went Smile

2018SoFarSoGreat · 05/02/2021 00:42

The old Pete Seger song 'Little Boxes' refers to 'ticky tacky houses in Daly City, California. I live there, and these ticky tacky houses cost way more than a million these days.

longwayoff · 05/02/2021 07:29

Hi @Slightlyunhinged. No. Not Somerset, just a very old town in the south. Which reminds me. In the town with the 'most haunted inn', one of the little shops, average front room sized, has an enormous ornate carved stone fireplace which apparently came from one of Henry VIIIs dissolved monasteries.

AdoptedBumpkin · 05/02/2021 11:03

@NeedCoffeeCoffeeCoffee Probably not, but don't wish to be specific. It's a small world around here as you'll know 🙂

Slightlyunhinged · 07/02/2021 01:54

@Longwayoff, i see. I asked because we have a curfew bell as well and we are in Somerset.

echt · 07/02/2021 02:16

In its earliest European manifestation, the place where I live was called Batmania.

Should be twinned with Gotham near Nottingham - there's a town in Derbyshire with the same name as where you live, so maybe they could make it a town 'tripleting' Grin

peboh · 07/02/2021 17:54

We have a church that is quite funky.

Have you noticed that the mall with the lion clock is called Letsby Avenue?

SimonJT · 07/02/2021 18:01

I thought it was the Isaac Newton centre?

jcyclops · 07/02/2021 18:39

@TooManyButtons I can see polar bears from my bedroom window
@whiteroom You live near a zoo?

Donny has its critics, but it's harsh calling it a zoo. Grin

jcyclops · 07/02/2021 18:40

For some time, my local shops included a cafe that wasn't allowed to serve food, and a sandwich shop that closed for lunch.

longwayoff · 07/02/2021 19:05

Somewhere in the Midlands is the estate agency named Doolittle and Dalley. I refused to believe it for years but there it is. Genius name.

In the south of England there is an estate agency called Mansell McTaggart.

Their signs always prompt DH to say there’s been a murrrrderrr in his best Glaswegian.

Vebrithien · 08/02/2021 12:30

In the city I grew up in, there is the largest parish church in Europe, which was built to the dimensions of Noah's ark.

When it was finished, it was such an edifice that it interfered with the downdraft for the chimneys in the terrace row of houses along its east side. The (wealthy) vicar who had designed and overseen the building of the church, then purchased the row of houses, and let them back to the tenants, at a much reduced rent.

I think my favourite has to be the town that has a Skipping Day! - GrinGrinGrin
