Quirky things about where you live

I have discovered, quite accidentally, that I live in a recently designated Market Town. I love this! We have one market stall, on a Saturday. It sells trousers. Sometimes, it sells plants. Sometimes it sells tartan stuff. On Thursday, but might be Tuesday, it sells fish. Sometimes, none of the above is true.
We're a Market Town now!! Do not be messing with me, I've developed webbed feet

Slightlyunhinged · 03/02/2021 01:31

@Gliblet, I know it said Gliblet before I pressed send! Gah!!

The hospital in my town was originally a workhouse, during the Irish potato famine and right up until WW2. There are two mass burial sites on the grounds.

SospanFrangipan · 03/02/2021 01:44

Our town hosted I'm a celeb last year. It was brilliant. The whole town made a huge effort decorating the high street etc.

hadtojoin · 03/02/2021 01:56

The town where my brother lives was the site of the first powered flight in a local lace mill and the first artificial limbs were developed here.
There are also two streams on either side of the high street, one flows south to the english channel and the other goes north to the bristol channel.
There was a bomb proof shelter built during ww2 at the back of a bank in the high street. It was used to hold the emergency bank note supply of the bank of england. There is unconfirmed speculation that the crown jewels were also held there.

@PenCreed
You haven't got a big black cat though

My home town is the hometown of the last women to be convicted of witchcraft in England.
Knowing the area surprised it didn't carry on for longer Envy

Convicted and executed I should add... I think the last women to actually be convicted was during WWII believe it or not

Home to the first KFC and the first section of motorway

Casschops · 03/02/2021 03:21

@Fuckitsstillraining are you in Rathkeel?

skybluepinks · 03/02/2021 03:21

Not far from where I used to live is an operational lighthouse that serves no useful purpose whatsoever.

Nitflux · 03/02/2021 03:34

The village I grew up in in the UK has a pub in it. The pub’s car park is opposite, across a small river. The river happens to be the county dividing line so the pub is in one county and it’s car park is in a different county.

In the city I now live in in the US there is a 30 year difference in life expectancy between the wealthiest and poorest neighborhoods.

Monty27 · 03/02/2021 03:34
@Monty27 I bet you live where I do- HG?!
Yes nearby
Village indeed !👍

@EnfieldLady

My town is the site of the world's first ever cashpoint ATM. On the 50th anniversary of its installation, the cashpoint now in that location was switched for a gold one. And just 100yds up the road is a gold postbox for a local Olympic heroine.
That’s a great pub quiz question - especially when you ask who was the first person to use it?
DialSquare · 03/02/2021 09:01

@Rachie1973

Not far at all. I'm Shoeburyness. Moved here from London just over 4 years ago. Best thing I ever did. Particularly since having lockdowns!

EnfieldLady · 03/02/2021 11:48

@SabrinaThwaite - if you know, you know Wink

It's not unusual, in the middle of winter, middle aged men walking around in shorts and flipflops.

JewelTheft · 03/02/2021 12:10

@TitusPullo

We have a large tree in the middle of my small childhood town that stretches over the road. Local legend says that as you pass under it you shouldn’t speak or you will get bad luck. No idea why/when this superstition started but everyone seems to know about it. The school bus used to fall silent when we drove under the tree everyday.
Is this the town on the hill that also has a valley? If not, we have a tree with the same superstition.

Intriguing! Why only middle aged? Both my sons go to school in shorts all year round, they just prefer it.

FreezerBird · 03/02/2021 12:37

In the town where I live now, every summer we have an influx of Orthodox Jewish families on holiday.

FreezerBird · 03/02/2021 12:39

Oh, and many years ago there used to be a taxidermied bear in the castle ruins.

I never saw it but older residents who grew up here speak fondly of it scaring the crap out of them.

garlictwist · 03/02/2021 12:42

@BikeRunSki ha, I know exactly where you live :)

goose1964 · 03/02/2021 12:43

Sometimesonly , I think it's to do with the rugby club, everyone else is too sensible

BikeRunSki · 03/02/2021 12:43

Do you live locally @garlictwist?

Nutrigrainygoodness · 03/02/2021 12:48

There's roman Fort remains, but if you want to visit them in summer you have to brave a herd of cows.
