Quirky things about where you live

I have discovered, quite accidentally, that I live in a recently designated Market Town. I love this! We have one market stall, on a Saturday. It sells trousers. Sometimes, it sells plants. Sometimes it sells tartan stuff. On Thursday, but might be Tuesday, it sells fish. Sometimes, none of the above is true.
We're a Market Town now!! Do not be messing with me, I've developed webbed feet

We have 2 churches in one churchyard, 1 of 6 such in the country I think.

Rachie1973 · 02/02/2021 22:48

@DialSquare

I live fairly close to the longest pleasure pier in the world and a WW2 shipwreck containing 1400 tonnes of explosives.
Lol you live near me now then, I moved to Rayleigh to get married
Bloodypunkrockers · 02/02/2021 22:50

@ilovecardigans

After William Wallace was executed (he was hung, drawn and quartered), his 'quarters' were sent to four different corners of the realm to warn other dissenters.

My town was the recipient of one of the upper quarters. Legend has it that it was ordered to be nailed to the then wooden bridge and to be left there until the fingers rotted and dropped off into the river.

I live in the town(city) that got one of his limbs.

"The major roundabout in my town has its own Facebook page"

Ours has a band named after it.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 02/02/2021 23:01

The town I grew up in is home to the world's first traffic roundabout. If we're doing roundabout chat...

Saz12 · 02/02/2021 23:03

Now, now, let’s not squabble about whose roundabout is better than whose...

AllTheFloralCurtains · 02/02/2021 23:08
@redsquirrelfan I have been to Sark three times. I love it.
@AllTheFloralCurtains
I thought there were no cars on Sark, just tractors.
@redsquirrelfan and @Ginfordinner
It's not Sark 👍 It's Alderney.
You're quite right, no cars on Sark - just tractors and horses. Their population is even smaller - just 500.
I think the island may be even smaller too, but not by much.

ClareBlue · 02/02/2021 23:16

Population less than a 1000 and we have 15 pubs. We used to have over 20 but a few closed😄

Twernip · 02/02/2021 23:23

@redsquirrelfan That's a different set of treacle mines! But it's interesting to know that they are not just confined to Sussex.

I used to live in a village that had holiday homes for gangsters and celebrities and was the site of William the Conqueror's landing.

Also, our windmills (this is a general Sussex thing, admittedly) have sweeps, not sails!

SirB0bby · 02/02/2021 23:40

Dr Edward Jenner, the chap who discovered/invented vaccinations lived in my nearest town. Imagine the lives he has saved over the years! I wonder what he'd have made of our current situation!

Zoomies06 · 02/02/2021 23:47

@ammary

Where I lived is one of many places claiming to be the instpirafion to Tolkien for Lord of the Rings and also for CS Lewis.
I know what County you mean 😁.
Zoomies06 · 02/02/2021 23:49

@RuggerHug

I live in the only town/village in the country without a pub.AngrySad
We don't have a pub either Sad.
EnfieldLady · 02/02/2021 23:50

My town is the site of the world's first ever cashpoint ATM. On the 50th anniversary of its installation, the cashpoint now in that location was switched for a gold one. And just 100yds up the road is a gold postbox for a local Olympic heroine.

choccybuttonshelpeverything · 02/02/2021 23:51

We have halowwen on the last fri in October not the 31st

Zoomies06 · 02/02/2021 23:52

We have a roman path in our village is still used to this day obviously a modern path now .

Ericaequites · 02/02/2021 23:57

I live in the most wooded town in Rhode Island.

jennytheonionslayer · 03/02/2021 00:03

We have an early 19th century (1803) windmill that's bring fully restored to working condition.

It's big too!

@peaceanddove

According to village rumour, our house was built 200 years ago by the local Duke, for his favourite mistress! Since then, our house has also been the village ironmongers, the village GP surgery and the village florists!
Ooh, that reminds me.

The house I grew up in was built by the Earl of Warwick as a hunting/shooting lodge. His wife, Daisy (of 'Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do' fame) was the mistress of Prince Albert the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII), and very well loved by the people of the village.

They didn't think much at all of the Prince of Wales though, and when he became King there was a village tradition of not joining in with the National Anthem.

Daisy was quite a woman I think.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 03/02/2021 00:17

One of our local pubs has a real bear pit with a stuffed real bear in it. Apparently until the 1970s (I think) the police would hold anyone they'd arrested in there until the end of the night.

Gingaaarghpussy · 03/02/2021 00:23

Lord Nelson went to school in my towns 6th form college. We had somewhere round 16 pubs. There are tunnels all over town leading to the church. We had the tallest church spire until the tower fell down in the 1800's i think. The peasants revolted not far from town.

RubyGoat · 03/02/2021 00:28

We walk past a castle every day on our way home. It's still partly inhabited. We also walk past the small remaining part of an ancient woodland, we can see the woods from our house but the trees block the castle from view.
There's also a pub nearby, during the civil war they apparently served poisoned ale to the invading soldiers!

@CosyAcorn - you're not far from me...

ZackaryQuack · 03/02/2021 00:50

Ooooo @Gingaaarghpussy you've reminded me, our cathedral has tunnels out of the city, back from the days when the Monk's had to travel to the surrounding towns (we no longer have Monk's or a Monastery obviously)

Grumpasaurus · 03/02/2021 00:56

@Monty27 I bet you live where I do- HG?!

ilovecardigans · 03/02/2021 01:25

I live in the town(city) that got one of his limbs.

Greetings, fellow quartertowner! [grin[

ilovecardigans · 03/02/2021 01:25
