Quirky things about where you live

I have discovered, quite accidentally, that I live in a recently designated Market Town. I love this! We have one market stall, on a Saturday. It sells trousers. Sometimes, it sells plants. Sometimes it sells tartan stuff. On Thursday, but might be Tuesday, it sells fish. Sometimes, none of the above is true.
We're a Market Town now!! Do not be messing with me, I've developed webbed feet

Funny and interesting thread.
@Piranesio - by coincidence, I recently seen a very short clip on Youtube you might like. Look for Fyfe Robertson/jelly babiesSmile

My village had an old ochre works/mine along the river in a deep valley which is now a rather nice nature reserve, complete with dam. I used to play there as a child and it was frankly dangerous with bits of metal sticking out of the ground and tumbledown buildings. There used to be wild pigs roaming in the woods. It’s only 3 miles outside the nearby city suburbs but felt like some sort of post apocalyptic wilderness back then.

@TheGracefulwhale

Half the year I live opposite a sports pitch. The other half, I live opposite a lake. The sports pitch miraculously recovers from the flooding every year ready to be used for the summer season. It's incredible
Think I know where you are? North West?
HUCKMUCK · 02/02/2021 20:43

A church in my town has a hand painted replica of the Sistine Chapel ceiling.

I have seen the real one but not the local one which is about a 6 minute walk from my house.

@AllTheFloralCurtains

I live on a tiny island (about 3 miles wide, by 1.5 mile long) with a population of less than 2,000. The whole island has a speed limit of 35mph and no one ever wears seat belts. The Germans occupied it during WW2 and it has over 300 fortifications on it (Victorian and German) plus an old concentration camp. Tons of famous people used to live here, including Julie Andrews. We have hedgehogs that are blonde, and puffins. It's very common to see dolphins swimming around too.

There are no badgers or foxes on the island, despite it being British.

I'd like to go there sometime, I've been to most of the other main Channel Islands (not Sark).
KateF · 02/02/2021 21:05

The Great Train Robbery happened here

KateF · 02/02/2021 21:17

And my hometown has a castle that looks nothing like a castle and is filled with horseshoes. Nearby is a 'drowned village' in a reservoir.

nothingcomestonothing · 02/02/2021 21:30

We have 'borough beans' - a field gifted to the village hundreds of years ago, to be planted with a certain kind of beans, and on a given Saturday any resident of the village can go and pick as many as they want. It's been kept going by village residents all that time, it's a lovely tradition and a fun day out if it falls on a sunny day.

Naticus · 02/02/2021 21:30

@RuggerHug

I live in the only town/village in the country without a pub.AngrySad
I can think of 5 within about 4 miles of where I live 🤣
Naticus · 02/02/2021 21:33

It is shit though Rugger

CMOTDibbler · 02/02/2021 21:34

@Ballbagisnotmyname I'm rather fond of the Asparamancer! We have Prunella the plum..

Ginfordinner · 02/02/2021 21:34

@redsquirrelfan I have been to Sark three times. I love it.
@AllTheFloralCurtains I thought there were no cars on Sark, just tractors.

33goingon64 · 02/02/2021 21:36
@Ginfordinner, I think we established that we are nearby but opposite sides of the county border about a decade ago, if I’ve kept up with your name changes.

@33goingon64, you might even know me x
Well I went to the same school that's been referred to and knew Jodie Whittaker, though she was a few years younger than me. Lena Headey was older than me. I hail from the place of large pies!

Fineanddandylion · 02/02/2021 21:38

We have possibly the most ridiculous statue in the history of the world in the middle of our high street. He's called the DandyLion 🤣🤣🤣

RaidersoftheLostAardvark · 02/02/2021 21:41

Is DandyLion a....Sealion??? geddit??

peaceanddove · 02/02/2021 21:42

According to village rumour, our house was built 200 years ago by the local Duke, for his favourite mistress! Since then, our house has also been the village ironmongers, the village GP surgery and the village florists!

CosyAcorn · 02/02/2021 21:43

We have a biscuit factory so some streets always smell like freshly baked biscuits. It's delicious.

And a nearby town has the worlds largest peardrop. It's like 6foot tall, and 50 years old.

Iamuhtredsonofuhtred · 02/02/2021 21:47

I have a Victorian swimming pool in my basement. It sounds really posh but we cant afford to have it fixed up so it’s just sitting empty surrounded by boxes

HexWitch · 02/02/2021 21:55

We have streams running under our city, and secret tunnels that were used during the English civil war.

EastLondonParent · 02/02/2021 22:04

I live round the corner from where the first V1 bomb landed in WW2.

Lincslady53 · 02/02/2021 22:06

On my paper round in my home town, I delivered to a road named after the large detached house at the top of the road. It was mysterious. 30 odd years later, when secret war documents were made public, I discovered that the house was the HQ for Bomber Command and the Dambusters raid was planned there. Bomber Harris had a private road from the house he stayed in to the HQ that my dad's allotment now covers.

ilovecardigans · 02/02/2021 22:20

After William Wallace was executed (he was hung, drawn and quartered), his 'quarters' were sent to four different corners of the realm to warn other dissenters.

My town was the recipient of one of the upper quarters. Legend has it that it was ordered to be nailed to the then wooden bridge and to be left there until the fingers rotted and dropped off into the river.

Rachie1973 · 02/02/2021 22:41

I’m from Lyndhurst in the New Forest which is ‘quaint’ anyways, but being a ‘villager’ along with the rights of the commoners I know all the little bits that aren’t in the tourist books.

The hidden orchard deep in the forest where their used to be a cottage, all the old charcoal burning pits.

Being close to Southampton city also gives us 2 tides a day.

Clevs · 02/02/2021 22:41

@CMOTDibbler You live near me😃

Rachie1973 · 02/02/2021 22:43
