Do you live near the sea and a city?

If you do, where do you live? We want to uproot and start new somewhere as we’ve had enough of Cornwall. I love big cities and my partner loves the beach so trying to find somewhere that has both!

Sorry not really an aibu but wanted a big range of answers so we can explore properties.

Just outside Brighton and Hove.

I absolutely love it here and wouldn't live anywhere else. Beach, National Park, City........it's wonderful. Except you can't park but..... Grin

Lewes (Near Brighton) lots of lovely beaches near by and very pretty town with lots of history.

Yorkshireswithallroasts · 31/01/2021 11:54

There seems to be a lot of us in Swansea! Actually, most of the schools in Swansea are good. Some in ‘nicer’ areas than others, but pretty much all good. Depending on budget there are some lovely areas in all directions. It’s not a big city though but Cardiff isn’t that far.

Knitwit99 · 31/01/2021 11:55

Edinburgh. 10 minutes walk from the beach, 20 minute bus ride to the city centre. And so many of East Lothian's beautiful beaches within a half hour (or less) drive

lots33 · 31/01/2021 11:55

@TroysMammy yes agreed, the market is fabulous. Particularly for fresh fish! Family members in the SE can’t believe how cheaply we can buy amazing fish!

Chutneywashisname · 31/01/2021 11:58

as we’ve had enough of Cornwall.

My dream UK location is Cornwall.

Chicago - not actually next to the sea but a huge lake and you can't see the other side so it's a bit like the sea but without the salt. Smile

Ohdoleavemealone · 31/01/2021 12:02

I'm close to Liverpool and 45 mins from beach. Around the wirral you can find yourself less than 30 mins to both Liverpool and the Beach.

thegcatsmother · 31/01/2021 12:02

ShutUpAlex I disagree with you. I'm back in Cornwall after 13 years in and near Brussels, and Cornwall is not backwards, apart from not having an IKEA closer than Exeter. You think Cornwall is racist, classist, and runs on a dreckly basis? Try Belgium, it's worse, and the education system there is not brilliant. They are only now moving to having the end of secondary exams marked externally as we do.

I am very glad to be home.

Another Swansea poster here. I was born and brought up in Cardiff but moved to Swansea in the 90's to be nearer to beaches. Unfortunately due to lockdown I can't access any as we can only exercise from our door and it's a bit too far to walk. My DS and DD can both walk to the beach from their homes. I just love the glimpses of the sea as I drive to work or the supermarket though

Dannii2531 · 31/01/2021 12:07

I live in Gateshead it's 15 minutes to Newcastle and 30 minutes to the beach at South Shields in the car. There is also a good bus and metro network to get around including to Sunderland and Durham . I think it's the best of both worlds and Gateshead is cheaper than Newcastle.

Frazzled99 · 31/01/2021 12:09

Leigh-on-Sea in Essex. Pretty fishing village with beach, cafes, pubs, cockle sheds...cobbled streets and very pretty. 40 mins on the train to London.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 31/01/2021 12:10

Another vote for the Vale of Glamorgan.

We have a beach within 5 minutes walk, a country park in 10 minutes walk and trains every 15 minutes into Cardiff. Cardiff has great shopping, theatre, sports..... Great schools locally too.

The Brecon Beacons are less than an hour’s drive if you fancy a change of scenery - not right now obviously but in normal times!!

Boogiewoody · 31/01/2021 12:13

Aberdeen is a big-ish city with a lovely big beach within walking distance of the city centre. It's a great city, I love it and you're close to beautiful countryside. Houses are expensive but if you're moving from Cornwall it might not be that bad.

joystir59 · 31/01/2021 12:14

Edinburgh?

NotQuiteUsual · 31/01/2021 12:14

I'm in southern Northumberland. It's lovely here. Near Newcastle and the best beaches. My area gets a bad rep as rough. But I'm yet to see anything that made me feel uncomfortable or unsafe or anything of that sort. I actually feel a lot more comfortable here than the rich, safe town down south I lived in before. It's friendly a relaxed. I do struggle with how much laid back it can be, I think I come across as a bit intense as I'm used to a faster pace.

WhatWouldZenoDo · 31/01/2021 12:17

I do, I live in a suburb of dublin 20 minute walk from a lovely sea front, but houses are so expensive here. I live in a tiny terraced house that is still 50 minutes on the bus from my work

WhatWouldZenoDo · 31/01/2021 12:19

@BiddyPop

Dun Laoghaire - nice seafront town on outskirts of Dublin

Can also recommend Crosshaven on outskirts of Cork

Dun Laoghaire is lovely, its main street is a bit lifeless at the moment but there are regeneration plans afoot I believe. Probably all halted because of covid mind you. But ............. it's a handy place to live.
WhatWouldZenoDo · 31/01/2021 12:22

Alicante of course.

I don't live there but I would love to live there.

gingercat02 · 31/01/2021 12:22

NE coast less than 8 miles to Newcastle (bigish city) also local over/underground railway if you choose the right area.

IEat · 31/01/2021 12:22

In my mind I see the sea the beach the grey clouds I hear the crashing waves feel the wind through my bones
The reality is I live in a crap city full of crap with more crap
Oh god I just had a teary moment writing what I wish I could see rather than bloody tower blocks
One day I’ll be there, one day

Veuvestar · 31/01/2021 12:23

I live 2 minutes from the beach and 20mins into Liverpool city centre

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 31/01/2021 12:25

I live in Southend (on-Sea). Less than an hour to London. It's nice enough here but property is insanely expensive compared to outside the SE bubble. Trains to London are expensive too (£60 for a family of 4) so we don't go as often as we would otherwise like to.

We are considering moving away in a few years for these reasons.

Isitbedtimeyet4 · 31/01/2021 12:28

Exeter :)
