Do you live near the sea and a city?

If you do, where do you live? We want to uproot and start new somewhere as we’ve had enough of Cornwall. I love big cities and my partner loves the beach so trying to find somewhere that has both!

Sorry not really an aibu but wanted a big range of answers so we can explore properties.

I live in a suburban part of Liverpool. Short walk to the Mersey promenade which is a nice walk/cycle.

10 minutes on the train to city centre. 20 minutes on the train to Crosby Beach which goes on to Formby/Southport. Also 30 minutes on the train to West Kirkby/Hoylake.

Bridgend. Cheaper than both Cardiff and Swansea and Vale of Glam. Can walk to the beach (just - takes about 45 mins, practiced this lots in lockdown as not allowed to drive there currently!).

Equidistant between both Cardiff and Swansea, right in the M4 corridor, excellent links to everywhere and did I say cheap?

Schools good and lots of them - first choice school almost invariably is the one you get. When kids go to Uni - grants are much more generous than in England plus all full time FE education free no matter what age you are. Oldies can retrain free here. :-)

wantmorenow · 31/01/2021 13:00

And prescriptions are free too!

Proudboomer · 31/01/2021 13:01

Surely it is dependant on budget, age and requirements of children and jobs.
Then you have to look at things like weather as no doubt some of the places mentioned are lovely but the weather would put me off.

I am on the Sussex coast as it has all i want from a location plus the weather is warmer than places which would offer similar but are further north.

Brighton and it’s a godsend living by the sea in a lockdown. Feel thankful every day here for the space, the sea, the downs and the community spirit in this city.

ShutUpAlex · 31/01/2021 13:04

Our budget would be 400K tops and looking for four bed minimum. Found lots in Swansea for that price.

My folks live in Herne Bay and are within 45 minutes of Canterbury and a bit longer to London.

TheSoapyFrog · 31/01/2021 13:05

Just seen your budget. Scrap the Kent coast then!

PeregrineDive · 31/01/2021 13:06

Ayrshire, Scotland. I'm 15mins from the beach and 30mins from Glasgow

ItsIgginningtolooklikelockdown · 31/01/2021 13:07

Edinburgh. In fact we'll just do a house swap with you as I think Cornwall sounds amazing Smile

Omemiserum · 31/01/2021 13:07

Brighton is a city now

EmmanuelleMakro · 31/01/2021 13:09

Langstone near Portsmouth.
My grandmother lived there and eternally regret selling her house!

Vintagevixen · 31/01/2021 13:10

My house cost £350 K for a four bedroom, but I live in East Sussex in a town considered beyond the pale on mumsnet, though I love it!

There are many places along the Sussex coast you could get something with a budget of 400 K and be near Brighton/short commute to London. As others have said it depends how big a city you want.

It is lovely being near the sea - I was watching surfers yesterday so you do get that "surfy" vibe associated with Cornwall.

You'd get a good house in Swansea for that.
FitterHappierMoreProductive · 31/01/2021 13:12

Another vote for Liverpool- live in Crosby / Blundellsands / Formby. Benefits of being right in the beach, with some lovely beaches ip the coast towards Southport. But still only 15 mins in Merseyrail into the City. Which is a fab city. Plenty of good schools in Liverpool too.

Only problem for me is the weather - it doesn’t get as pleasant as Cornwall in the summer, you never get proper snow in the winter (but true of anywhere coastal?) and it rains. A lot.

Teandsympathy · 31/01/2021 13:14

I grew up in southsea, it’s great and close enough to lots of other nice places too (new forest, Brighton, Southampton)

Mooey89 · 31/01/2021 13:14

I love that so many people are recommending my lovely city 🥰 I live in Eastney (Southsea) which is in Portsmouth. Beautiful seaside (I swim in the sea all year round) quirky bars and places to eat, city, lots of green space just outside, close to Brighton, not far from London. We love it here.

LouHotel · 31/01/2021 13:16

People really do forget about Plymouth, the city centre is practically attached to the sea.

Lifeinaonesie · 31/01/2021 13:16

Whitstable. Walk to the sea, about 15 mins into Canterbury city centre.

Mooey89 · 31/01/2021 13:16

Southsea beach at sunset the other day. ♥️

RuggeryBuggery · 31/01/2021 13:18

Only thing with southsea is if your DH likes the beach in Cornwall because of the surf.... well you don’t get much of that in the Solent 😁

ikeepseeingit · 31/01/2021 13:20

The Wirral has my vote here! 20 mins to Liverpool, 25 mins to Chester, beaches and countryside walks. House prices vary but are nowhere near the prices down south. Train line into Liverpool and commutable to manchester for day trips. If you have 400k you'd get a lot of your house for your money anywhere in Merseyside, a four-bed detached with a good size garden is for sure :)

Scottishskifun · 31/01/2021 13:20

Loads of places all along the East Coast of Scotland but the beach is bloody cold and sea even colder at 6-10 degrees in the summer.......

Cosyjimjamsforautumn · 31/01/2021 13:21

Southsea (went to Uni there), chichester, southampton. I miss an sunday morning walk by the sea to blow away the cobwebs hangover followed by full english and builders tea at a seafront cafe Grin

FourCandelabras · 31/01/2021 13:23

Belfast is fabulous: mountains, city, and sea. And property is affordable.
