To think it’s concerning if someone hasn’t passed urine

For ten hours

OP posts:
Royalbloo · 28/01/2021 17:33

Depends how old they are
Depends if they've been awake

Can you provide more context?

Kumquatsquash · 28/01/2021 17:33

What is the age of the person? I think my dad was in his 50s and hadn't passed urine for 2 days. He had to have a catheter inserted and filled 2 bags.

Souther · 28/01/2021 17:35

Context is needed

Bagelsandbrie · 28/01/2021 17:35

It’s a long time but my dd aged 17 regularly goes that long and always has done. Think she has a bladder of steel...!

NiceTwin · 28/01/2021 17:37

I am over 50 and can go 10 hours without passing urine.

There is a difference between not passing urine and not being able to. Which is it.in this case?

DamnUserName21 · 28/01/2021 17:37

It needs monitoring. Have they been holding it in deliberately? How much have they been drinking if awake?
Bear in mind, people can 10 hours asleep and not urinate.

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 28/01/2021 17:38

Needs context.

DamnUserName21 · 28/01/2021 17:38

*can spend...

yesbueno · 28/01/2021 17:51

do they NEED to go but can’t?
have they been drinking fluids?
are they ill?

Living6767 · 28/01/2021 18:39

Mid 20’s say they don’t need to.

OP posts:
bitliketonyhares · 28/01/2021 18:47

Not concerning. If they can't when trying, then yes. They don't need to go, it's fine.

Moo678 · 28/01/2021 18:54

When I was a junior doctor I used to work a 12 hr shift and not go to the toilet once - because I also didn’t get a chance to eat or drink. Depends on their fluid intake but probably not worrying in itself in a young person.

Brighterthansunflowers · 28/01/2021 18:59

Are they dehydrated? Is this unusual for them? Are they otherwise ill?

Not much to go on OP!

aLilNonnyMouse · 28/01/2021 19:03

Is it new behaviour or the way they have always been? I can easily go 15+ hours if I'm out and about and don't fancy using public loos. Most days I go a maximum of 3 times.

Are they showing any signs of dehydration, and do they seem to be uncomfortable? If it's a very young child I'd think maybe they are holding due to fear of pain possibly, a UTI or something?

Teenager or adult I'd probably leave it for now.

Emmelina · 28/01/2021 19:05

Are they drinking enough? No input, no output. What colour is it when it comes? Dark=dehydrated.

polkadotpixie · 28/01/2021 19:06

I quite often do this. I have a bladder of iron and I don't drink enough

BudgieHammockBananaSmuggler · 28/01/2021 19:06

Are you just going to drag this out, drip by drip, OP?

Sexnotgender · 28/01/2021 19:06

Get them to drink a litre bottle of water and if they still don’t pee within a few hours id maybe be concerned.

samanthawashington · 28/01/2021 19:09

Unless there are other issues and they are unwell, then they are clearly not drinking enough. Bladders of steel just don't exist. People are just not drinking adequate amounts.

vodkaredbullgirl · 28/01/2021 19:11

I work 12 1/2 hour shifts, sometimes I can go most of my shift not going to the toilet.

YesMeLady · 28/01/2021 19:12

What are the circumstances, are they unwell,

FFSAllTheGoodOnesArereadyTaken · 28/01/2021 19:14

Fit and healthy and normal for them and no other symptoms and havent been drinking loads -fine.
Feeling very ill, drinking but not being able to- go to A and E

Wingedharpy · 28/01/2021 19:15

@BudgieHammockBananaSmuggler : "drip by drip" - very good.😂😂😂

NoSquirrels · 28/01/2021 19:20

Eh, if they’re otherwise well then what’s the worry? Why do you even know how long it’s been for someone in their mid 20s? Confused

TrickyD · 28/01/2021 19:27

@Living6767

Mid 20’s say they don’t need to.
It's when you want to go and can't that it is dangerous.

A dinner party all our guests remember - one man had been out drinking earlier, wanted to pee, couldn't, got a bit agitated.

Fortuitously another guest was a GP, she phoned for an ambulance telling them 'Urine retention' and he was carted off to hospital.

Another guests always remembers that amongst all the fuss, he didn't get the second helping of duck confit he was hoping for.
