Light hearted - AIBU in enjoying a Vegan Almond Magnum?

OH said and I quote ‘what you bought these for, you’re not Vegan’? I was saying you don’t have to be Vegan to enjoy vegan foods (as I do most of the cooking I slip a few veggie and vegan meals in each week).

I’m actively trying to reduce my dairy consumption, not just for animal welfare reasons but also to decrease saturated fats.

It’s not often I have a treat but these Vegan Magnums are a game changer. Utterly delicious and about 30% less calories than the dairy magnum. Being made from pea protein & coconut oil you get some fibre in too.

YABU - Vegans eat Vegans food.

YANBU - Enjoy what you want.

Currently on offer for £2 a pack in Sainsbury’s Grin

MrMeSeeks · 29/01/2021 18:47

Yabu simply because it has coconut in it Envy
Why always coconut???

@ToadsThePeanutButterSnob

Just read the article properly. Again, it's a US study where food labelling isn't as strict so when it's referring to unintentionally contaminated they're simply referring to the standard cross contact which is what 'may contain' in the UK means. It looks like they don't/didn't have to state that in the US but again not relevant to the UK.
I said this wasn't the study I read.

There is a difference between
May contain. And. Made in a factory

My daughter has allergies and has reacted to numerous food that say may contain over ones that say made in a factory.
May contain is riskier than made in a factory.

PattyPan · 29/01/2021 19:19

@MrMeSeeks coconut oil and palm oil are the only vegetable fats solid at room temperature and there’s all the issues with palm oil so some people avoid it. Leaving coconut oil as the answer!

VerbenaGirl · 29/01/2021 19:20

My DD has vegan Magnums because she’s dairy free, and my omnivore DH is always snaffling them.

Hankunamatata · 29/01/2021 19:22

Vegan magnums are amazing. Prefect since all kids are dairy free

Hankunamatata · 29/01/2021 19:24

They are pricey though so I only buy when on offer. Tesco dairy free fake magnums are not bad. Their dairy free cornetto's are yum

ToadsThePeanutButterSnob · 29/01/2021 19:45

@wrongleverkronk

I think we're at cross purposes here. You seem to be talking about allergies but I am talking about avoiding food for ethical reasons. Obviously if you're allergic to milk you are probably going to want to avoid food that says it may contain milk.

However if you don't eat dairy because you want to reduce demand for it then the fact it is made on the same production line and might have come into contact with some dairy is highly unlikely to bother you that much.

Hence why it is not incorrect or a marketing scam or whatever to advertise these products as vegan.

BigHuff · 29/01/2021 22:25

Ben and Jerry's banana walnut and cookie dough flavours are delicious. The northern block caramel almond is very good too. Oatly strawberry is good for when you're craving childhood neopolitan nostalgia. And the booja-boojas are the best of the lot.

(Also, not ice cream, but I recently had a vegan kinder bueno - a " 'Love Raw' Cream-filled Wafer Bar" and am now trying to find somewhere I can buy them in bulk.)

rockingthelook · 29/01/2021 23:04

Vegan Magnums were 3 for £1 in our local B and M, converted, so nice

Theowawaynow · 30/01/2021 10:44

@ToadsThePeanutButterSnob if you avoid them for ethical reasons then why would you be buying magnums at all, assume you don’t buy Oatley either?

Just make sure those ethics aren’t “trend” deep! Marketing scam is exactly the right word for all this!

Why do you even care?

And I am a bit too old to be following trends.

Theowawaynow · 30/01/2021 12:40

Why do I care? Because ethical declarations are important to actually think through other likely impacts before people blindly follow them and do more harm than good, then claim the moral high ground.

Good job nobody is claiming the moral high ground then.
ToadsThePeanutButterSnob · 30/01/2021 13:38

Personally I don't drink milk because I think it's weird to drink the breast milk of another species. Eating a vegan magnum does not conflict with that belief. I am not asking other people to agree with me nor do I care what other people do. Or did I miss the memo that says if you have beliefs about one thing you have to give a shit about every single cause on the planet?

ladyslattern · 30/01/2021 13:41

YANBU vegans love it when non vegans eat their food. Chipping away at the dairy industry one Magnum at a time.

TheRealHousewife · 01/02/2021 11:18

Thank you for all you’re responses.

OH also states that ‘the only Gregg’s sausage roll I’d buy would be the original and not that Vegan S*’ (he hasn’t tried the Vegan one). I think I’ll get one of each and ‘test’ him with the Vegan one 😬.

Has anyone tried the vegan sausage roll? Are they a good swap?

He calls himself a ‘tradionalist’. I’m more open in trying new things and ideas.

I have. They’re really nice. Partner and kids like them too. Texture and taste are both good but I find people who say things like ‘vegan shite’ say they hate any vegan alternatives virtually before they even take a bite of it. 🙄

I think most vegan alternatives are good. The only thing that isn’t is cheese in my opinion, sadly. There are some okay ones but none are really good. Most are better on pizzas and cooked but I hope one day someone finds a way of making vegan cheese alternative better.

TheBuffster · 01/02/2021 11:46

I know of vegans that have been given the real ones by accident and didn't realise till halfway through eating. I would just give him a veggie one and say you have the veggie and he has the meat one. It'd be interesting to see if he claimed there was a difference when they are both the same.

In my experience people like that will never reduce their meat consumption. They see it as a point of pride or principal or something.

Best just make changes for yourself and use good substitutes in things that don't rely fully on a meaty taste. For example swapping veggie mince in spaghetti Bolognese is easier than trying to get dh to eat a vegan steak.

My DH was a meat eater for 35+ years before he swapped. He was always polite and interested though so always had potential to change.

Thank you! The buenno bars were one of my ed fave before she had to give up dairy.
Breathmiller · 02/02/2021 15:14

Oooh, i love a vegan magnum. My dh doesn't like almonds though so i need to get just the plain chocolate ones.

My new favourite vegan ice cream at the moment is Oatly vanilla.

YoniAndGuy · 02/02/2021 15:20

@MasterBeth

Meat Magnums are nicer.
Grin

Have you tried the tuna cornettos? Pretty good actually.
