Light hearted - AIBU in enjoying a Vegan Almond Magnum?

OH said and I quote ‘what you bought these for, you’re not Vegan’? I was saying you don’t have to be Vegan to enjoy vegan foods (as I do most of the cooking I slip a few veggie and vegan meals in each week).

I’m actively trying to reduce my dairy consumption, not just for animal welfare reasons but also to decrease saturated fats.

It’s not often I have a treat but these Vegan Magnums are a game changer. Utterly delicious and about 30% less calories than the dairy magnum. Being made from pea protein & coconut oil you get some fibre in too.

YABU - Vegans eat Vegans food.

YANBU - Enjoy what you want.

@HollysBush

I often choose vegetarian or vegan foods when out because I like them, ethical and environmental reasons and to try to increase the availability of them. My only dilemma is: what if I take the last vegan sandwich, then an actual vegan comes along and there’s nothing they can eat? But what if no one buys it because they want to leave if for an actual vegan, then it doesn’t get sold and the shopkeeper stops selling them?

I’m thinking about this WAY too much aren’t I 😂

Eat it, if there's no vegan sandwich then they'll go elsewhere

The Aldi vegan Magnum style ice creams are amazing. I need to stop buying them ax I’ve been eating one every day. They do salted caramel. I’m not prepared to go full vegan but I’m reducing my dairy in take (already meat free). I prefer these to the dairy ones.

phoenixrosehere · 29/01/2021 10:12

YANBU.

I really don’t understand the mindset some people have against vegan food. Vegan food isn’t just for vegans, it’s for anyone who wants to have them regardless if they eat animal products or not. There are so many lovely foods that just happen to be vegan as long as it taste nice, why does it matter that it is?

phoenixrosehere · 29/01/2021 10:13

*vegan. As

RavingAnnie · 29/01/2021 10:34

Anyone can eat vegan food. I had a pretty much vegan wedding abd the food was amazing.

But edible food like substances (ie heavily processed foods like this) are not healthy for anyone so please don't think they are just because they say vegan on the front.

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 29/01/2021 11:56

I really don’t understand the mindset some people have against vegan food.

I don't know many people who genuinely wouldn't eat salad or proper vegan food.

But as soon as you process a substitute, it becomes not terribly healthy and some taste just vile. And not just because it's vegan. I eat real butter, I am not buying substitutes. I don't care if they are vegan or anything, I just want the real thing.

I buy real apples though Grin

JM10 · 29/01/2021 11:57

Vegan magnums are the best magnums so yanbu

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 29/01/2021 11:59

Being a bit vegan is about doing your best .. anything helps to reduce the use of milk and meat .. well done !

I think probably the majority of vegan substitutes are substitutes of foods which are already processed though, like magnums, sausages, burgers etc.
Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 29/01/2021 12:53

It's all relative of course, but I buy my burgers and sausages from local butchers and local farms, I wouldn't call them processed as such.

rosetylersbiggun · 29/01/2021 12:55

Are they properly nice, or nice for vegan? I bought Alpro vegan ice cream the other week and it's inedible!

VinylDetective · 29/01/2021 13:01

Properly nice. We buy them from preference.

Hangingover · 29/01/2021 13:08

Haha if you're a paying customer get what you like!

I did used to get mad on pizza day at work tho. I was the only vegan so they always ordered a small vegan one just for me. Some of the Omnis thought they'd have a slice of the vegan on alongside their regular pizza "just to give it a try" and then probably just be rude about it afterwards leaving only one or two pieces for me, god love em!

Turnedouttoes · 29/01/2021 13:48

No they are properly nice. I never buy dairy free substitutes like Alpro as I think they all taste awful but genuinely the vegan magnums are lovely.
I only got into them as a friend bought me one as a substitute dessert and I had to eat it to be polite but I was very pleasantly surprised

TwelvePaws · 29/01/2021 13:56

I really like Alpro yogurts, they’re really nice.

They are processed by definition 😛
Theowawaynow · 29/01/2021 15:00

You can eat what you want, “vegan” food is just plants and we all need to eat those!

Don’t do it on environmental or health reasons though because both are a bit of a fallacy. Better to eat local and unprocessed be that meat, grains or veg!

wrongleverkronk · 29/01/2021 15:25

My biggest bugbare is vegan stuff that clearly states 'may contains milk' - YOU're not fucking vegan if you contain milk!!! It's a marketing scam.

Vegan magnums are nice and you wouldn't know they weren't 'normal'

Dd has milk allergy BTW we're not vegan

Fairyliz · 29/01/2021 15:27

You are being unreasonable eating food out of season. Surely ice creams are for the summer?
Will no one think of the air miles Grin

unmarkedbythat · 29/01/2021 15:31

Who the feck gatekeeps vegan food?! The more people who reduce their dairy intake the better so every little helps.

And you're right, they are really, really nice.

TwelvePaws · 29/01/2021 15:32

I don’t think so. For me, it’s no different than preparing something vegan for me at home. Other people in my house eat meat and dairy so there’s a chance my vegan meal may be ‘contaminated’ with milk for example if there’s a drop of milk on a surface I haven’t noticed which my ingredients then touch. I couldn’t guarantee my meal would be ok for someone with an allergy to milk but it’s vegan as far as I’m concerned.

TheBuffster · 29/01/2021 15:41

May contain usually means it is prepared in a factory that handles milk. My milk allergy friend ignores it, but I don't think it's as serious an allergy as it could be.

It must be super annoying to be allergic to milk. It's put in the most bizarre things- like salt and vinegar pringles!

On the processed front I recommend Sainsbury's shroom dogs. Basically mushroom sausages but sizzle like real ones. DH loves them.

I wouldn't gatekeep any vegan food unless it was a buffet. As previously said it's annoying when everyone eats the food you can have when there are plenty of other options. To combat this I always bring a dish to make sure I'm not just stuck with salad.

I might gatekeep veganaise though.
It's like vegan crack.

MrsVogon · 29/01/2021 15:50

I'm vegan and don't give a shit whether people who eat meat wants to eat vegan food. It's all down to individual choice (I'm not a preachy vegan). It's nice you are reducing dairy etc but it's not up to other people to say you can't eat vegan food when you aren't vegan. So stupid! 🤣.

TheBuffster · 29/01/2021 15:56

I suspect I am a preachy vegan.
To be fair I a preachy feminist too.

Vegans are as preachy and unpreachy as every other person. It's personality and has nothing to do with veganism.

I realise the irony that this sounds quite preachy.Grin

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 29/01/2021 16:16

They are processed by definition 😛

Grin You are right of course, but I would make the same ones at home, I just can't be bothered.
