Vegan Magnum

Light hearted - AIBU in enjoying a Vegan Almond Magnum?

OH said and I quote ‘what you bought these for, you’re not Vegan’? I was saying you don’t have to be Vegan to enjoy vegan foods (as I do most of the cooking I slip a few veggie and vegan meals in each week).

I’m actively trying to reduce my dairy consumption, not just for animal welfare reasons but also to decrease saturated fats.

It’s not often I have a treat but these Vegan Magnums are a game changer. Utterly delicious and about 30% less calories than the dairy magnum. Being made from pea protein & coconut oil you get some fibre in too.

YABU - Vegans eat Vegans food.

YANBU - Enjoy what you want.

@wrongleverkronk

My biggest bugbare is vegan stuff that clearly states 'may contains milk' - YOU're not fucking vegan if you contain milk!!! It's a marketing scam.

Vegan magnums are nice and you wouldn't know they weren't 'normal'

Dd has milk allergy BTW we're not vegan

That just means it's made in a factory where milk is also present. It doesn't mean there's actually any milk in there.
TheBuffster · 29/01/2021 16:24

@Iknowwhatudidlastsummer good call. I always thought sausage grinders looked overly menacing.
Nice username. 2020s version of that movie would be super boring though. Unless people started getting anonymous notes about flour hoarding.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 29/01/2021 16:24

Forget the magnums, try Swedish Glace Chocolate
If you can find it - my local supermarkets rarely have it ib stock, but its amazing

garlictwist · 29/01/2021 16:25

I have to say that any vegan dessert I have ever had has always been hugely disappointing. Especially brownies.

TheBuffster · 29/01/2021 16:27

@garlictwist my vegan chocolate flapjacks are the bomb.
You can find the recipe on veganuary.

ToadsThePeanutButterSnob · 29/01/2021 16:28

@Iknowwhatudidlastsummer

I really don’t understand the mindset some people have against vegan food.

I don't know many people who genuinely wouldn't eat salad or proper vegan food.

But as soon as you process a substitute, it becomes not terribly healthy and some taste just vile. And not just because it's vegan. I eat real butter, I am not buying substitutes. I don't care if they are vegan or anything, I just want the real thing.

I buy real apples though Grin

What about foods that aren't substitutes as such but just happen to be vegan? Like a jammy dodger or beef pot noodle?
wrongleverkronk · 29/01/2021 16:31

@ToadsThePeanutButterSnob
My dd has had reactions so many times for may contain that we don't take the risk.
Yes she reacted to these magnums

We stick to Swedish glase.

May contain actually isn't the same as made in a factory they are different.
May contain is more risky than made in a factory and usually means that they share machinery lines so contamination is more likely.
There was a study done that showed nearly 50% of may contain products actually do contain - I'll try and find it.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 29/01/2021 16:31

Northern bloc vegan ice cream is good too.

I've had the Pear and Ginger and The Chocolate and orange blossom. N

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 29/01/2021 16:32

I honestly don't think my kids have ever even seen a pot noodle. It doesn't mean they are not in love with McDonald's or Haribos Grin
but I tend to stick with healthier food at home, and not feel guilty about outings or parties!

GwendolineMarysLaces · 29/01/2021 16:33

Aldi's cheat versions are epic. You're welcome.

TheBuffster · 29/01/2021 16:35

@wrongleverkronk I'd be interested in that study.
It must be a pain dealing with a milk allergy, I honestly don't know why there's milk in virtually everything. It's bizarre.

Cross contamination is not something most vegans worry about.

Personally I am vegan so my money doesn't go towards the dairy or meat industry. Eating something that may have come into contact with milk does not conflict with that belief so I have no problem eating vegan magnums or any other vegan product that states it may contain milk.

davidsSchitt · 29/01/2021 16:40

I've just had a shite meat magnum

davidsSchitt · 29/01/2021 16:41

White meat not shite meat

MammaSchwifty · 29/01/2021 16:41

I had them while dairy free for a while, the only "substitute" type food I bothered with, I found them lovely.

I still always refer to them as "Vagnums" though

ToadsThePeanutButterSnob · 29/01/2021 16:42

My DP and DS aren't vegans so even food I make at home could be contaminated.

I once ordered a vegan pizza from Papa Johns. Halfway through eating it I noticed there was a piece of ham on it. I could have stop eating and refused to eat anymore because my food had been contaminated but what would the point of that be? I just removed the ham and continued eating.

ToadsThePeanutButterSnob · 29/01/2021 16:51

@wrongleverkronk

I just skimmed read that but it looks like a US study. From what I understand their food labelling laws are not as strict as the UK.

I don't think the article is saying that 50% of foods with the 'may contain' label have that particular food in there either. I think when they say contaminated they are simply referring to cross contaminated, e.g machines not being thoroughly cleaned.

The article was also about allergies. Avoiding food because of allergies is not the same thing as avoiding it for ethical reasons. So me buying a vegan magnum or any other vegan product with the 'may contain' warning does not conflict with my belief to not want to give my money to the dairy industry.

Nah, going by MN over the last year the notes would be about murdering people by leaving the house unnecessarily

TheBuffster · 29/01/2021 16:56

Yeah. Or beaten to death with a 12 pack off value loo roll.
I know what I did last summer. Got fat making vegan cookies on maternity leave.
Probably not a box office hit.

ToadsThePeanutButterSnob · 29/01/2021 16:57

Just read the article properly. Again, it's a US study where food labelling isn't as strict so when it's referring to unintentionally contaminated they're simply referring to the standard cross contact which is what 'may contain' in the UK means. It looks like they don't/didn't have to state that in the US but again not relevant to the UK.

JovialNickname · 29/01/2021 18:06

I voted YABU as I feel vegan Magnums are uneccessary, and may cause a shortage of real Magnums if the inferior version becomes too popular.

They’re not inferior. So vegans aren’t allowed nice stuff because carnivores might suffer. OK.
TheBuffster · 29/01/2021 18:13

No danger of that. They mark up the price after veganuary.

Surely if the vegan magnums become so popular that there ends up being a shortage of dairy magnums it will only be because people are buying more of the vegan versions. Therefore how can they be inferior if people like them?
