According to DP "most people" have eaten dinner by 6pm.

Referring to adults, not children.

He's obsessed with eating at a time I consider pretty early.

I'm giving him the side eye Hmm

We eat somewhere between 8 - 10. Occasionally later if it's a weekend. I used to hate having to eat at 5ish with my parents, I just wasn't hungry! Obviously when DS grows up he and any siblings won't be forced to wait until then to eat. I'll aim for some family meals eaten together (and preferably always lunch) at a reasonable time that suits everyone, but no way could I stomach food before 8. I've tried and it just sits in my stomach like a lead weight! 😂

MacDuffsMuff · 27/01/2021 21:28

We have it at about 6, not much later. We're all home by then and it leave the evening to do other things then. Well it normally does anyway!

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 27/01/2021 21:31

Absolutely not, that's very early. I usually eat 7:30-8pm

Trinacham · 27/01/2021 21:31

Dinner before 6 here. We eat as soon as we can when we get home at 4:30! Very hungry after work.

blowinahoolie · 27/01/2021 21:32

LizFlowers we are up early every day. The youngest DC will have their supper at 5.45pm, bath 6pm and usually asleep before 7pm. Older DC and I eat supper just after 7pm, pot of tea at the table etc. We all eat together around the table. DC don't know any different. I appreciate it's incredibly early for most others though 😬

Someone mentioned above Scandi folk also eating early, wonder if it's to do with where you are in the world? We are far north, in Scotland. Dark quickly.

BigButtons · 27/01/2021 21:34

We have had dinner by 5.30-6pm. I hate eating later than that.

scubadub · 27/01/2021 21:34

We have dinner at 5:30/6 because we sit with the dc to eat.

Ideasplease322 · 27/01/2021 21:35

When I wasn’t working for home, I didn’t get into the house until around 7:30pm so ate around 8pm.

Now I eat early - probably about 7pm.

Brighterthansunflowers · 27/01/2021 21:35

I finish work at 6 and eat around 7. When I was working in the office I didn’t get home til 7 so ate between 7.30 and 8.

FunnysInLaJardin · 27/01/2021 21:36

We eat with the DC aged 10 and 15 at about 7.30 each night. YANBU!

mummyof2boys30 · 27/01/2021 21:36

5.20 every day. But then i work some evenings and start at 6 so that's how that routine started

Pleasegodgotosleep · 27/01/2021 21:36

We eat family dinner with the kids at about 6.30 5/6 nights a week. 1/2 nights a week we have our dinner later, often about 9pm.

Dixiechickonhols · 27/01/2021 21:37

Prefer to eat 7 or 7.30. Suits me better stops evening snacking.

JaceLancs · 27/01/2021 21:37

7.30/8 is our usual evening meal time

Sbowiegirl · 27/01/2021 21:38

We start eating dinner between 530 and 630. But only since our son was born and I got a job closer to home. Before DS was born I worked later and we ate about 8pm.
Now we batch cook and just heat something up for dinner

tillyandmilly · 27/01/2021 21:39

I eat around 7.30 to 7.45 pm - even when I was working and got home just after 5pm it was still too early to eat as I wasn't hungry until 7.30pm!

topcat2014 · 27/01/2021 21:39

Dishwasher on and in pyjamas by 6pm

Movinghouseatlast · 27/01/2021 21:40

We eat at 8.30pm.

CarryOnPlainHunting · 27/01/2021 21:40

We’ve got earlier in the last couple of years. Used to be at about 8, now about 6:30. Partly habit because I used to go out most evenings pre-Covid. But largely now because I’ve realised thatit’s better for me. I was snacking at 5/6pm because I was hungry but still had hours until dinner. And I eat a smaller lunch knowing that dinner isn’t so far away.

TheOneLeggedJockey · 27/01/2021 21:41

We usually eat around 6pm-ish, sometimes earlier, sometimes later.

DH’s commute is 10 mins, and I WFH in the afternoons.

DC are 12 and 10, and I can see it getting later as their activities push into the evenings.

CantSayJack · 27/01/2021 21:42

We eat between 5 and 6pm so we can all sit down and eat together.
When we were growing up it would be 7-8pm so we would wait for our Dad to join us.

fruitypancake · 27/01/2021 21:46

We have dinner with kids between 5.30-6 ish, when they were younger we'd feed them earlier and eat more like 730 when they were in bed. Think it defo depends on the age of your children. Also better for you to eat and digest earlier

Noranorav · 27/01/2021 21:46

We eat at 6 with DCs but actually thinking of pushing it out to 7pm - because we're doing less in lockdown, they're less tired, going to bed later which is making the evening longer - and a snack fest. Later dinner might help...hmmm...we're in office jobs now WFH so dinner time is flexible - but also because it's not manual work we're not ravenous at 5.

The later dinner = posher I think is a very old overhang of a bygone era. Children with a nanny would have their 'nursery' tea, bath and be rolled in front of mama and papa for a kiss before bedtime. Mama and papa have their dinner and when old enough, children join - e.g That's how the Queen was raised (although her parents were more involved than that).
Working class families from yesteryear - dad's in at 5, full day labour, hungry -mums cooking- eat together.
It's a hybrid nowadays, based on commutes, job, age of children etc so no wonder there's a wide range! My ideal time would be 8 - don't mind eating at 6 but so hungry by 9 and hate eating out that early- it just feels wrong! (Though I wouldn't turn it down at the moment 🤣)

DianaT1969 · 27/01/2021 21:48

If he doesn't snack afterwards it's quite a healthy thing to do. The gut gets a rest until his meal the next day.

joystir59 · 27/01/2021 21:50

I eat tea not dinner at 5.30 in winter and a bit later in summer. Dinner is for visitors!
