According to DP "most people" have eaten dinner by 6pm.

Referring to adults, not children.

He's obsessed with eating at a time I consider pretty early.

I'm giving him the side eye Hmm

DH finishes work at 2.45pm each day ( starts work at 7.15am). We eat with the DC. I have no desire to tidy kitchen beyond 5pm! Have usually been up since 5am most days.

cathcath2 · 27/01/2021 21:13

I tend to breakfast and lunch late. I have only just finished work now so dinner will be when it's cooked!

Birdladybird · 27/01/2021 21:13

We eat about 7pm weekdays. Sometimes earlier or later on weekends depending on how we feel. My DCs will usually have a small snack when they get in from school at 5.30pm

DearTeddyRobinson · 27/01/2021 21:14

Weekdays the kids eat about 5. At weekends we eat with them, about 5.30. Back when we both commuted I would get home by 6 and start cooking (or reheating) then, to eat for 6.30. Then bath etc for kids, if we waited til they were in bed it wouldn't be till 8.30 and we would be starving! Then awake with indigestion Confused. I'm usually in bed by 10 for an early start the next day, so eating at 8 would not work for me. By the time you've eaten and cleared the kitchen, got things ready for the morning it's bedtime!

doubleshotespresso · 27/01/2021 21:14

We have a pretty intense schedule here with SEND DC, so rarely eat dinner before 11pm. I would be destroyed eating my main meal at 6pm or before

LizFlowers · 27/01/2021 21:16

@blowinahoolie

Breakfast 7am, lunch 11-11.30am, tea 4pm and supper 7pm.
That sounds OK if you start work early. I can't imagine having breakfast at 7am but I am not an early riser :-) and when I did have to get up at 7 to go to work, I'd breakfast at work. I'd shift lunch to 12.30-1.30pm; tea and supper at 4 and 7 are very civilised.
ShutUpAlex · 27/01/2021 21:17

We eat as a family 7-7:30. Kids too.

EileenGC · 27/01/2021 21:17

I have dinner when I get in from work. Yesterday and today it was 8pm. Tomorrow and Friday night will be 11pm at the earliest. On weekends I tend to have it around 7 but that's already too early for me. Granted I grew up in Spain where the earliest we had dinner (in primary school) was 8/8.30pm. Turned into 9.30/10 when we moved up to secondary.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/01/2021 21:18

Eat dinner at 11? What time do you go to bed?!

I’ve been in bed an hour by then!

AtseneGatnalp · 27/01/2021 21:18

6PM? Blimey. We eat at 8ish. When the DC were little, they ate earlier, at 5ish, so we could get them into bed and asleep by 7. Once they were older, we would compromise and eat a 7ish. Now 8 is relatively early.

Yewrobin · 27/01/2021 21:19

6.30 to eat with the kids ... otherwise be about 7-8

OrangeBananaFish · 27/01/2021 21:19

I eat dinner at half 12 - 1PM. However, tea is about half 5. We all eat the same things as a family, always have done. I couldn't eat as late as 7 as I'd want to be sat down for the evening by then. In normal times I'd go to running club or bootcamp and people would be like "I'm having XXXXX for tea" or "looking forward to my tea, I've earned it" and I'd be thinking I've already eaten. I just can't eat that late, but I do realise (and did before this thread) that it is weird to be so early and its not normal.

EileenGC · 27/01/2021 21:23

You've been blessed with regular working hours then Grin On the days I finish work at 10pm and eat at 11pm, I'll be in bed at midnight-ish. Tomorrow work is 9-1pm and 6-10pm. Friday is the same. So I don't even get to sleep longer the morning after, alarm will be 6.30-7 😭
HibernatingTill2030 · 27/01/2021 21:23

In my head, the proper times for meals include breakfast being taken between 6-8, lunch/dinner around 12-2pm and dinner/supper at around 6-8.

ltappleby · 27/01/2021 21:23

We eat at 8pm. I think 6pm is too early - too soon after lunch

blowinahoolie · 27/01/2021 21:23

"but we usually eat anywhere between 9pm and 10:30pm."

Haha, am usually asleep by then 🤣

bettertimesarecomingnow · 27/01/2021 21:24

We eat about 5.30 for the kids mainly tho!

Jambalaya76 · 27/01/2021 21:24

I'm normally famished by 5pm!!

Rhubarbcrumblerules · 27/01/2021 21:24

Not eaten yet, been on zoom Rock choir. Always eat quite late anyway and never in bed before midnight.

mathanxiety · 27/01/2021 21:24

We never eat before 7pm here and usually closer to 8. I have breakfast about 7am, lunch somewhere between 12 and 1 (usually closer to 1), and a little snack or pick me up/ cup of tea about 4.

This schedule was for the entire family, kids included.

OP
Is your DH offering to cook dinner for the family at around 5? Or is he in effect asking that you drop tools and cook at an ungodly hour of the afternoon for him?

userxx · 27/01/2021 21:25

Like to be done and dusted by 6.30pm, can't stand eating much later as it lies heavily and I feel sick when I go to bed.

Taylrse · 27/01/2021 21:25

Around 6-6:30pm.
I don't like eating too late but obviously you don't always have a choice with work.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/01/2021 21:25

6 pm is too early, too soon after lunch? What time do you eat lunch?! 3.00pm?

I eat mine at 12:30, breakfast at 7. I’m quite peckish by 6.00 pm!

PattyPan · 27/01/2021 21:27

I usually don’t end up starting cooking until at least 7/7.30 unless I have to eat earlier because of my night school schedule and even then I’d not eat before 6. Wfh I usually finish work around 5.30 but when we were in the office if I left at 5 I wouldn’t get home until 6.30 so no chance. Growing up we used to eat around 8 as well, my mum actually was a bit snobby about a friend’s family who ate before 6 because it was ‘nursery time’ Confused

EileenGC · 27/01/2021 21:28

To compare with a PP, I too eat breakfast around 7.30am but lunch isn't until 2-2:30pm. So a 6pm dinner would be way too early. I guess it depends on how one's schedule looks. If you have a normal 9-5 office job then dinner at 6pm seems normal. If you work weird hours throughout the day, you gotta adapt your meals to that!
