Have you had a cold since March 2020?

Just that, really!

As a visiting teacher working in a petri dish schools, this is probably my longest period of not having a cold, thanks to covid and all the increased hygiene measures. It feels slightly odd not to have had days on the sofa surrounded by a sea of tissues.

What does this mean for the common cold? I'm hoping it won't be back with a vengeance!

YABU - I've had a cold since March 2020
YANBU - I've been cold-free since then!

Had a couple of quite rotten ones - COVID negative both times though

Plonque · 27/01/2021 14:42

Yes last summer, I normally have loads more though.

CakeRequired · 27/01/2021 14:44

No and I'm so happy! I love being away from disgusting people who have bad hygiene, it's kept me healthy. I hope to keep working from home forever because of it, haven't been this healthy in years. No matter how many times I wash my hands, don't touch doors, disinfect etc when I'm in the office or go to shops etc, I catch everything.

Sethy38 · 27/01/2021 14:47

I haven’t had a cold in about 6 years
And then it lasted an afternoon!

I have about 20-25 portions of fruit and veg a day

HappyThursdays · 27/01/2021 14:47

I am someone who is genuinely never ill

pre March 2020, I was commuting into central London every day on packed trains and tubes so it was no surprise to me when I got Covid in late March!

since then, I haven't been ill until about 3 weeks ago when I caught a hideous cold that just hasn't shifted. Have no idea how I got it as I'm working from home and only going out to walk the dog

so tbh I have been more sick than usual since March 2020 but not sure I can blame it on anything or anyone

Sethy38 · 27/01/2021 14:48

Oh and I have school aged children

Catsneezies · 27/01/2021 14:48

@Emeraldshamrock there was a thread about that about a year ago just before covid took hold in the UK, about whether things like flu and notorious rates would go down massively if people were more hygienic i.e. covered their coughs and sneezed and washed their hands more often/properly.

I was so shocked at people's responses as so many people were claiming that washing hands is pointless and that it is better to "build up" your immune system by being unhygienic. So many posters claimed that they hardly ever washed their hands! I often wonder about the people on that thread and whether covid made them change their minds about the importance of good hygiene.

Sethy38 · 27/01/2021 14:49

@Hollyhead

I had one in early November, which to be honest in retrospect might actually have been covid, but no typical symptoms. Headache for a week, then a classic cold, then a week of being able to smell but my nose felt like I'd snorted swimming pool water up it - all cold and dry, which I've now read sufferes of covid have had.

Normally I don't get colds, one every 3-5 years.

Er yes... this sounds like covid!
EileenGC · 27/01/2021 14:49

No, and other than an ear infection everyone in my circle (work and friends) seems to have avoided them.
I get 2 chest infections every year and a couple of colds in between. My last chest infection was at the beginning of March and I haven't had a single cold since (touch wood it stays like this). No Covid either as I'm tested 3 times per week at work.

Catsneezies · 27/01/2021 14:49

norovirus not notorious!

Londontown12 · 27/01/2021 14:49

First year I haven’t had a cold 🙌🙌 constant hand washing. Face masks keeping my distance and staying home all day everyday unless I do food shop or hospital appointments

Redcrayons · 27/01/2021 14:50

Nope, nothing.I had a stinker over Christmas 2019 with a long lingering cough till end of Feb (Hmm) and nothing since.

Ssmiler · 27/01/2021 14:51

I’m not due one as I normally only get one once every two years at most and the last one was jan 20. But the reason i avoid most colds is because they trigger a chronic lung condition for me so I have always practiced hand hygiene, always kept distance where I can, covered my face when I can and never touched handrails doors etc without sanitising. People used to laugh at my hygiene routine but now they laugh and say I was right all along. Maybe this new approach to hand hygiene is why most people are now, like me, not getting as many colds

Wishing14 · 27/01/2021 14:59

It might not be a good thing that people aren’t getting colds, seeing as they think antibodies from the common cold might make Covid-19 less serious ...

Springersrock · 27/01/2021 15:00

I’m at the tail end of a cold at the moment - it’s worked it’s way through my whole family (we all had tests and were negative)

It’s the first one we’ve had in over a year though.

None of us have had stomach bugs or anything like that either.

I had some weird viral thing in the summer that no one could work out what the hell it was - I woke up one day covered in tiny bruises which got worse as time went on. Several negative COVID tests and daily blood tests for 2 weeks, the hospital had idea what it was other than I’d had some sort of virus. My platelets dropped through the floor and I was wiped out for weeks. No one else caught it

PhilCornwall1 · 27/01/2021 15:00

I should say I have. An absolute corker that started a week ago and I've still got it to a point. Bad head, coughing, sore throat. Have been minging.

How I got it, christ knows, nobody here has been out and I've not seen anyone else since Christmas Day.

Turnedouttoes · 27/01/2021 15:00

No not at all and I usually get a few over the winter. Someone in my team at work called in sick on Monday with a bad cold and I did think where on earth have you picked that up from as he lives just with his wife and has no children

Turnedouttoes · 27/01/2021 15:03

It does strike me as crazy now that pre-COVID we all used to think nothing of going into the office with all kinds of germs. That’s definitely where I’ve picked up colds in the past, from other team members

Allmyfavouritepeople · 27/01/2021 15:04

Had one in early October. Negative for COVID but high temp, shivers, body aches etc. After 3 days it was gone.

I usually suffer with all manner of upper respiratory infections all winter so I'm loving how physically well I feel. Mentally on the other hand....

GreenSlide · 27/01/2021 15:05

No colds and even better no vomiting bugs Grin

Poppins2016 · 27/01/2021 15:07

I've had one cold, caught from DS/nursery (tested negative for Covid).

HitchFlix · 27/01/2021 15:07

No and neither have my two preschool aged children. This is shocking considering the year before there was a barely week when one of them didn't have something. Lockdown with sick DC would have been too much to bear but it's probably not great for building their immune system though.

huggzy · 27/01/2021 15:14

Yes, twice, both within with first month or so of going back to work in a nursery after 5 months on furlough.

OhMsBeliever · 27/01/2021 15:15

I had a cough in March with chest pains which I wondered if it was covid (2 of my kids had what looked like covid toes at the same time)

Then mid September when they were all back to school we all had colds (I got a cough so got a test - negative) I think the cold germs were very happy to see everyone mingling at school again!

Nothing since then.

chilied · 27/01/2021 15:16

I haven't had one since just before the first lockdown. And I'm usually very susceptible especially when pregnant, which I was until DS was born in November. I'm really enjoying it, but worried about how it will affect DCs immune systems (DD has a bit of a head start on DS, but even so she's still only 3)
Wondering if the isolation is the main factor, though increased hygiene must also be playing a part too
