Basically that. A young (talking uni age) relative with 30k saved up for a house deposit has seen it and thinks it’s the lucky jackpot.

I know that area reasonably well, it’s known to not be very nice and is not ethnically diverse
Your nephew might not mind that but when it comes to resale it may be an issue

CoronaIsWatching · 27/01/2021 17:07

It's in Bradford, houses there are about half the price of comparable ones in Leeds.

HamletsHamlet · 27/01/2021 17:08

No garden or parking, tiny bedrooms, cramped kitchen, only one bathroom. And the location isn’t great. Has he/she checked crime stats etc for that area?

WTAF?

our first studio flat, which was fucking expensive ratio-wise vs. average wages, had no garden. public space was basically a sofa in your kitchen, because it was a studio. no bathroom, just what would (in a normal house) be called a downstairs shower room. no loft because it was in a block of flats without a lift. no outdoor space at all. no parking.

and it was fine, because it was ours, and we made it more livable with the things we could change.

the concept of having something as a amazing as the house posted here for our FIRST home would be completely amazing!

it's a starter home, it's maybe not in a great area, but it's fine!

Lotsofsocks · 27/01/2021 17:12

Is it definitely a back to back? Looking at the satellite view there appears to me to be a paved garden. Behind the railings is a bit of empty land that goes down the side of the house and curves round the back of the house and the house next door and had a gate at the bottom.

LizFlowers · 27/01/2021 17:17

There are houses cheaper than that in Bradford. I'm not sure it is a 'desirable location', however that particular house is good value for money, especially for a young, single person.

rwalker · 27/01/2021 17:21

LOCATION

Nopreservatives · 27/01/2021 17:24

I really like the house and would have been chuffed to bits to have it as a young single person. It must be the area though and in some areas cheap still isn't cheap enough.

When I worked in banking (a few years ago)I had a customer from London who came into a bit of cash and bought a whole terrace, in a similar area, for £10k each, thinking he was going to be a property tycoon. Last I knew he never did sell any of them

DipSwimSwoosh · 27/01/2021 17:25

No it's the one on the back which has the patio garden I think.

DipSwimSwoosh · 27/01/2021 17:30

Where does that lane go to? I can't work it out.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 27/01/2021 17:30

It's not a great area. How street wise is he?

I was trying to work that out. The details mention parking and an enclosed rear garden. That odd "buffer zone" behind the railings is a puzzle too.
Clappingforjoy · 27/01/2021 17:33

I really like it

Callingallskeletons · 27/01/2021 17:35

It’s not in the best area crime wise
The bedrooms & kitchen are tiny
The place looks very cramped and needs a full do-up

I don’t think it’s worth it & definitely wouldn’t think I’d snagged a bargain

bakereld · 27/01/2021 17:37

Just looked on google maps. Looks like the front has been completely redone? It's the one that joins onto the railings:

goo.gl/maps/uCPbSGFb2LnD3e9j8

Looks like it's next to a skate park and general park area for youths. I'd also be curious about the cellar? Why are there no pictures of it?

Oh the joys of the internet...Just found this your nephew might be interested in:

www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/17312005.council-stands-firm-ban-front-extensions-retrospective-application-refused/

'On Wednesday the Council’s Bradford Area Planning Panel refused a retrospective application for one such extension - 149 Rochester Street in Laisterdyke.'

149 Rochester street is the house for sale OP. This was just a quick search, and from 2018, so could be out of date. Check with the estate agent as I can't see anything about it in the listing detail.

HikeForward · 27/01/2021 17:45

It’s £70k! How many people do you think don’t have a garden, parking and more than one bathroom? The answer is literally millions

True. But 70k is still a significant amount of money, and while it may be ok for him as a starter home it would be hard to sell (thanks to the area). If he wanted to start a family in a few years he could be stuck with a house nobody wants to buy. Personally I wouldn’t want to raise kids in a house with no garden, parking or downstairs loo so it doesn’t sound like a great step onto the property ladder.

Far better to buy a small flat in a sought after area eg centre of a desirable city within easy reach of train station, secure car park etc then sell it on when he’s ready. It’s only an investment if it’s in a desirable location.

Anyone suggesting a drive to look at it has clearly never driven in the area it is in. It is lawless on the roads, speeding, illegal parking, stopping in the middle of the road, drug deals, drag races and no one is insured. I generally drive out of my way to avoid driving down Leeds Road or Killinghall or Barkerend.

Yes, it's not "a bit rough". I'd go so far as to say dangerous. A quick search gives 95 violent/sexual crimes within half a mile in December 2020.
KatyaZamolodchikova · 27/01/2021 18:05

Also plenty of grow houses in the area, I think there was a big fire there recently due to a cannabis farm.

MotherExtraordinaire · 27/01/2021 18:07

Given you can still buy flats in Bradford for 9k on that website, I'd say no catch!

SnowyOwl199 · 27/01/2021 18:13

I'm from and still live in Bradford and I would never live in that area.

Thank you for posting that link. I'm no good at that techy stuff.

I don’t suppose anyone would actively choose to. Unfortunately a lot of people don’t have that choice. My first house (which is now apparently worth £300k) had neither parking nor a downstairs loo. Terraced houses just don’t have off road parking - even those that cost six figures in London.
