If I had to vote for one of the most perfect capture of live music in rock - just a four piece in absolute lockstep - it would be the "Boogie Mama" bit from TSRTS (first saw that aged 16 in a double bill with "Easy Rider" at the Roxy cinema in Soho ...) ... there's an even better version around that was broadcast on the BBC from 1971 - sadly it's been snipped in all subsequent releases, but boy, could they do Elvis !

Page appears to have devoted his retirement to releasing incredible rare pictures of his time with Zeppelin.

Robert Plant doesn't live too far from me. Last saw him at the Wolves Civic ...

DGRossetti · 27/01/2021 17:54

I loved LZ as a teenager- much preferred John Bonham over the others.

Add him to Freddie Mercury in "they broke the mould" listings Sad

Such a senseless needless death.

Not bad for a heavy band.

And Robert Plant has gone on to simply get better and better.

LaCicciolina · 27/01/2021 17:56

No-one else comes close to young Dave Gilmour from Pink Floyd - the most beautiful man ever.

Yohoheaveho · 27/01/2021 17:56

black sabbath will always be my first love
apart from Alice Cooper, he's not pin up material tho

HilaryThorpe · 27/01/2021 18:01

When I was a teacher in a Middle School in the early 80s, we were allowed to choose the exit music for the Friday assemblies given for the whole school by each class. We chose Kashmir. 😂

Robert Plant 💕 singing Trampled Underfoot. There’s a cock song if ever there was one.

🎶 Check that heavy metal
Underneath your hood
Baby, I can work all night
Believe I got the perfect tools
Talking 'bout love
Talking 'bout love 🎶

I adored Marc Bolan when I was a little girl, never missed the Marc show on the TV.

YANBU. Zep are still the bomb. Pre-smack Jimmy was beautiful. And Bob Plant the only man who could wear a ladies' puff sleeve blouse and still look like a total love god. About 10 years ago I saw Jimmy Page walking down the road in London - it has to be said, only Jimmy Page fans would recognise Jimmy Page these days. He caught my eye through the cafe window where I was gawping awestruck at him and winked at me, and I wanted to freeze frame that moment for the rest of my life.

but yeah, I'm With the Band is a bit of an eye-opener.

Squeeze me, babe, 'till the juice runs down my leg
Squeeze, squeeze me, baby, until the juice runs down my leg
The way you squeeze my lemon
I'm gonna fall right outta bed

Not a song about citrus fruit preparation.

bringbacksideburns · 27/01/2021 18:15

Ah young Ian Gillan now you're talking!

Google Deep Purple Child In time live 1970. Song goes on forever but you can fast forward Grin

Yes Dave Gilmour was gorgeous. I remember the furore last time when someone put up a young Ozzy pic.

Hard to believe it now when you look at them but we were all young once.

I don't get the Jimmy Page/ Plant thing though.

LakieLady · 27/01/2021 18:23
@LadyfromtheBelleEpoque agree about David Byrne. I still fancy him!!

For me, it's Bowie all the way. He was old enough to be my dad, but I always thought he was beautiful throughout his years.
Bowie was just beautiful. I saw him live twice, once in 1968 or 69 at the Greyhound pub in Croydon (now demolished) and 2 years later at Fairfield Halls. Fantastic showman.

At the first gig, he was supported by a great band. They were called Roxy Music.

I saw T Rex when they were still called Tyrannosaurus Rex, too.

This thread is making me feel very old.

KathleenTurnerOverdrive · 27/01/2021 18:41

Yes Dave Gilmour was gorgeous

It went pretty quickly though. By his mid to late 30s he was balding and looked knackered.

Pedallleur · 27/01/2021 18:51

Greatest rock band. Defined the genre. Just Page's museum quality London home is astonishing. He was known to have exotic tastes for post show partying. But they did set the bar for that.

Stairway to Heaven is amazing - never tire of it.

InTheShadowOfTheMushroomCloud · 27/01/2021 19:00

DH and I saw Robert Plant in 2018 live ...was fabulous. DH isn't gay but he did say 'he would '.....😳

DGRossetti · 27/01/2021 19:04

@woodhill

Stairway to Heaven is amazing - never tire of it.
Most of their acoustic work is achingly beautiful. "That's the way" another apogee.

And despite their heavy metal credentials, they could mess around with time signatures with the best of them - Genesis, Jethro ..

Even Stairway has a teeny wrinkle ...

Aelfrid · 27/01/2021 19:08

YY ^^ It's so hard to choose a favourite album, but for me it's LZ III, mainly because of the breadth of musical styles, and the beauty of the acoustic material. I love the tracks where you can hear the delicacy of John Bonham's touch and timing.

cortex10 · 27/01/2021 19:16

Anyone mentioned Eddie Van Halen yet?

woodhill · 27/01/2021 19:17

Yes, it's got a hauntingly dreamlike quality and the way it unfolds

 • great name btw. Yes - he ended up looking like an overworked accountant who'd wandered on the stage by mistake.

It's actually refreshing to find out some of the old rockers have stayed in relationships (e.g. Charlie Watts) and not gone off with someone old enough to be their granddaughter. (Ronnie Wood/ Paul Weller / Jimmy Page...etc)
Maybe the ones who do dump their long standing and long suffering partners are forever stuck emotionally in their 20s or something. So they forever are with a young woman.
