@VinylDetective

It really is subjective. there are loads of men in the public eye that people swoon over that I just don't get.

CaptainMyCaptain · 30/01/2021 14:05

I don't remember anyone I knew fancying Mike Oldfield when Tubular Bells came out although we liked the music. I think he stemmed a bit geeky even though that wasn't even a word then.

CaptainMyCaptain · 30/01/2021 14:06

Seemed not stemmed.

I can remember him updating the theme tune to Blue Peter ...

("Why did you record the guitar at half speed and then play it at normal speed ?"

"Because I can't play that fast")

CaptainMyCaptain · 30/01/2021 14:10

He was certainly very clever and a technical whizz but not particularly sexy to me 17 year old self.

Same here. Like the over groomed blokes nowadays with glow in the dark teeth and skin the colour of plaster.

I think Mike Oldfield was seen as a bit of a nerd with a keyboard.

LadyfromtheBelleEpoque · 30/01/2021 14:56

'the over groomed blokes nowadays'

Yes! Oiled up!!! I think there was something fabulously wild and natural about the 70s look (on men).

Yes. I think that's something you grow to appreciate when you are older perhaps. I wasn't so into chest hair in my Bauhaus days as the look was skinny and effeminate.

LadyfromtheBelleEpoque · 30/01/2021 15:13

Pete Murphy...

VinylDetective · 30/01/2021 15:57

I still find chest hair a bit off putting.

ListeningQuietly · 30/01/2021 16:08

Dave Grohl is just a GOOD person.
Watch his eulogy for Lemmy.

WutheringShites86 · 30/01/2021 16:24

Dave Grohl is one if the very few who has actually gotten better with age, he was kind of gawky looking as a younger man.

Jimmypageswife · 31/01/2021 13:21

I love jimmy page and he was a very beautiful young man but he wasn't a nice person by all accounts although he's supposed to be much nicer now. He's also has seemed to have a strong preference for adolescent girls. He dated a 13 year old when he was 30ish. He literally used and abused very young women for his own pleasure and entertainment.

All that puts me off him.

KathleenTurnerOverdrive · 31/01/2021 15:23

Yes, the tenor of this thread seems to be paedophiles are lustworthy if they're famous, good looking and rich.

VinylDetective · 31/01/2021 15:31

It. Was. A. Different. Time.

frenchlavenderfeild · 31/01/2021 15:38

@VinylDetective is that supposed to be some sort of defense? Of course it was a different time and of course the matter was complicated by the fact that often the girls families were complicit in what was going on. However even in the 70's it was still not considered ok for a 30 year old to be sleeping with a 13 year old girl and its not just the sexual relationships but the use and abuse of children as mere play objects.

VinylDetective · 31/01/2021 15:46

No, it’s not a defence or a justification but it’s as relevant as bemoaning kids being sent up chimneys. It happened and society turned a blind eye to it. It still happens and society still turns a blind eye to it. Remember Rotherham?

wannabebetter · 31/01/2021 15:58

I can't believe we've come this far with no mention of the sex-on-legs perfection of Phil Lynott!!!

Glittertwins · 31/01/2021 16:08

@MorganKitten - not surprised about Axl Rose being a nightmare.
My DS has got into Led Zep courtesy of DH but no inclination of growing his hair like DH or Led Zep but he's still young ;)
Peter Steele of Type O Negative was a lovely guy.

username44416 · 31/01/2021 16:12

This was all happening in plain sight. It was very common for rock stars and any famous men, to have young girls queuing up to meet them. Teenagers were seen as more grown up then. It was common to leave school at fifteen or sixteen and to be married with a kid at 19. I know this, because I was brought up in the 70s.

Jimmy Page wasn't grooming kids outside school gates, teenage girls were throwing themselves at him. My BIL is in a band and one of his bandmates is in a wheelchair and pulls young women every night because he's in a band.

There were 'groupies' who were groups of girls and young women, who would follow bands around and stand outside their hotels waiting to be asked in. I was going to gigs at the age of 12 and 13 years old with friends and drinking in pubs. That would be unheard of now.

That was the kind of atmosphere in the BBC at the time that Saville and other famous (huge household names) DJs were having sex with groupies. People turned a blind eye because it was so common. I don't know about Jimmy Page keeping 13 years olds locked up; sounds sick but it puts that era into context.

amusedtodeath1 · 31/01/2021 16:32

I know Gilmour was so beautiful when young and yes Roger waters was very awkward and almost weird looking but Waters has grown into his looks and is apparently a much better person (he even admits he was wrong over the Pink Floyd name legal dispute - and if you know Waters that's a massive change).

But point being I have a "thing" about older Rog.

I don't know how to post a photo, I used to do these things but I forget lol.
