To think I could be pregnant so soon after birth?

I had an uncomplicated birth and stopped bleeding one week after, yes both me and my partner were foolish and had unprotected sex 2 weeks exactly after DD’s arrival. 2 weeks later I thought my period had started. Sorry TMI but I had a jelly like discharge tinged with blood. It barely covered a pad but continued for about a day and a half. I had mild cramping too. Then it just stopped completely. It’s now a week and a half later since the discharge and period has not come. Has anyone else had this discharge after pregnancy or does this sound more like implantation? There is no smell or itching so the chemist has told me it doesn’t sound like an infection.

You can get pregnant as little as 3 weeks after the birth of a baby, even if you're breastfeeding and your periods haven't started again.

Even the NHS website says 3 weeks as a minimum ^

You’d be unlucky OP.

2306IRW · 28/01/2021 21:39

Wow I couldn't even walk in a straight line 2 weeks after giving birth 🤣🙈 took a good 8 weeks to even think about attempting it!
The only way to know is to take a test?!

WineInTheWillows · 28/01/2021 21:41

I think it's unlikely so close to birth, from what the NHS says about it. 11 month age gaps are a different thing- that's sex two months after birth, not two weeks.

My midwife talked to me about contraception and opened it by saying “unless you fancy explaining why you have two kids in the same school year who aren’t twins?”

I cannot imagine a situation in which anyone would ever need to explain that. Surely it'd be obvious how it happened?

swaziscot · 28/01/2021 21:45

Im sure it’s not that uncommon to have sex a week or two after birth depending on how the birth went. After my first birth I was fine to, about ten days later. All women’s bodies are different, no need to sneer just because someone’s different from you.
Hope all goes well for you whether or not you’re pregnant OP.

whereisthejoy · 28/01/2021 21:47

Good going OP. I had an early baby and no tear or anything and still wouldn't go near my DH for a good few months!

Lucieintheskye · 28/01/2021 21:49

@Updatemate

Sorry, pressed send to soon!

Please site your sources. I know average in non-lactating women is 6 weeks and I know it can happen earlier but not how early.

There is no 'impossible' when it comes to fertility, even immediately post partum. Where is your source that states no one could possibly ever get pregnant before 17 days postpartum?

What a peculiar idea.

needsahouseboy · 28/01/2021 21:59

My brother is 10.5 months younger than me 🤷‍♀️

My friend at secondary was born in the September and her sister in the July, so both in same school year. I can remember a few of us , when we were in Y7 trying to understand why they weren't twins!

Here is a flowchart to determine whether you could be pregnant.

Although you can’t rule it out without a test I agree it’s more likely to be lochia. Mine stopped and started for the first six weeks with DD2 (it definitely wasn’t my period as that didn’t come back for about 18 months).

I do know someone who was pregnant at her six week check but it must have been only just. She said her GP was surprised and a bit impressed. Grin

Nicknamegoeshere · 28/01/2021 23:00

Unlikely if you are breastfeeding?

StrandedStarfish · 28/01/2021 23:13

It is possible, but not probable to ovulate 21 days after birthing your baby.

If you had sex at 14 days PN, then your -partners sperm would need to remain active in the uterus for a further 7 days. It’s unlikely but theoretically possible.

The jelly you mention is possibly Lochia serosa, the end of the post natal blood loss.

Your period might not have come because you did not ovulate.

Please take a test, or speak to your GP, local sexual health clinic, midwife or HV

evenBetter · 28/01/2021 23:58

Was your boyfriends bare penis in, or near your vagina? Then yeah, obviously, you could be impregnated again.

Fucking yikes. Are people really so uneducated about their bodies, still?

MissMarpleDarling · 29/01/2021 01:12

Do midwives not do the sex talk anymore telling you how fertile you are?!

Bookwords · 29/01/2021 01:19

Possible and nothing wrong with it at all, it’s what God intended by keeping you fertile. I would expect people to not be in the mood for such activities just after giving birth but nothing surprises me nowadays

Nowadays........ it's never happened i the "olden" days.... don't be so ridiculous!

OP, get a test.

My friend at school had a brother 9 months younger than she was.

It’s possible.

QueenPawPaws · 29/01/2021 01:48

Happened to a friend. She had IVF and had triplets, obviously figuring she couldn't get pregnant wasn't using contraception
She got pregnant and so had 4 children in the same school year Blush

That’s impressive!
Pinkmarsh · 29/01/2021 02:20

@Serin - same. I was ebf my dd and my periods hadn’t returned so it was a shock to find myself pregnant, especially as I don’t remember actually DTD 😂. I was about 10 weeks before I realised. We’d all had a stomach bug and everyone got better but I still felt awful. Thank goodness for the nausea really otherwise I dread to think how long it would have been before I realised!

ExitChasedByABear · 29/01/2021 02:34

@Jennifer998 Congratulations on the birth of your baby girl. The best possible thing is to test. If it’s negative but you’re still unsure then you might need to do a blood test. If you’re not pregnant and don’t want to be, now would be the time to consider pelvic rest and contraception later down the line.

@QueenPawPaws That’s impressive! I’m curious as to how she coped with 4 little ones. I hope she had lots of support.

LagunaBubbles · 29/01/2021 02:43

If you have had unprotected sex of course you could be pregnant.

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/01/2021 05:45

So @Jennifer998 have you poas?

loopylou42 · 29/01/2021 05:58

9 months between my eldest two children. My eldest was 5 weeks old when I had a positive pregnancy test.

Went for my 6 week check already pregnant again

OhioOhioOhio · 29/01/2021 05:59

Mine are all very close in age. It'll be fine.

Dyrne · 29/01/2021 06:06

@WatchWatch

As no-one has sited sources, I will reiterate my earlier statement- you cannot get pregnant 14 days from birth! 17 days is the earliest ovulation- 3 days for your hormones to recede and then 13 days for an egg to ripen!

17 days, possibly, 28 days definitely. 6 weeks, practically common!

And yes I can site my sources but you need a bmj log in to access them.

If anyone can give me a more up to date source (mine is 1991) with different info I'm all ears- I have access to all the medical journals!

So you agree that the minimum time reported in BMJ is 17 days (not counting cases which haven’t been documented for whatever reason).

The OP had sex at 14 days.

Sperm can survive in the body for 5 days.

Is it incredibly unlikely? Yes.

Completely inpossible? No.

Hence why OP should just POAS to put her mind at rest.
