...and his "even I'm struggling" on that BBC advert. I know someone else will have scripted it but dear god, it's so patronising.

For anyone who hasn't heard it, it's basically him telling us he's a genius who studies space and whatnot, and even he is struggling with teaching his kids at home.

Why wouldn't he be finding it hard? As far as I know he's not a qualified primary teacher. Patronising git.

I can’t abide the man either. He reminds me of Johnny Depp’s Willy Wonka. Creepy.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 27/01/2021 05:10

EugenesAxe that is the perfect description of the world’s most irritating man .

londonscalling · 27/01/2021 05:17

He's boring!

TheFaithfulBorderBinliner · 27/01/2021 12:40

I love the Horrible Histories version. They nailed him.

DH is an academic, a few years ago he had a little tantram about Brian and googled his publications. At that point they were apparently a little light for a Professor.

Mrs Cox used to be on Mumsnet, I'm going to check if there's an AIBU about a DH claiming all the credit for fuck all.

I quite like him usually but god he is awful in that advert!

Eleganz · 27/01/2021 13:05

It isn't a very well scripted as, but I appreciate the sentiment.

There is a lot of envy in academic circles about professor Cox. Whilst I was a postdoc I recall someone getting in a might huff about him being a physics professor because he apparently didn't do that well in his A levels.

He is one of a group of very talented science communicators that really turned around interest in science from the doldrums of the 80s and 90s. That is a pretty big impact that he should be proud of.

Completely agree with you on that. He's done a huge amount for making science accessible and should be proud of that. Honestly it's just this advert I'm objecting to.

But the stars! Millions and millions of stars ...

@Toilenstripes

I like him and don’t find the advert patronising at all. I’d really like to see Andrew Cotter do an ad with his dogs, Mabel and Olive. 😃
I would like to see him do all future government communications with them. And the news and weather. I love them
hansgrueber · 27/01/2021 20:50

Often the higher one's own ability the harder it can be to teach the lower level, earlier stuff. I'm sure we have all encountered teachers with excellent degrees from prestigious Unis but can't teach for toffee. As a secondary teacher up to 'A' level Maths I found the time I spent teaching in Primary and Infant schools so enlightening, I'd never thought about how subtraction works for example.

GeordieGreigsButtButtZoom · 27/01/2021 21:55

I met him once and he was lovely.

WingingItSince1973 · 27/01/2021 22:58

I didn't pay much attention to what he was saying as I was too busy wondering if he's had botox or something along those lines 😬
