To ask for cheerful film/tv/podcast/book suggestions

Lockdown has finally broken me and I don’t think my reading and tv choices lately are helping. Made the mistake of starting the year by re-reading 1984, then watched Songbird on Amazon Prime.

Looking for suggestions away from my usual serial killer, dystopian sci fi, thriller type things.

Need comedy and lighthearted viewing/listening/reading.

You need Cabin Pressure. Marvellous radio show by John Fennimore. All on the bbc website, starts with Abu Dhabi.

Modern family, the good place, how I met your mother, the unbreakable kimmy schmidt, Kim's convenience, motherland

I've started watching Superstore on netflix, nice and lighthearted.

Podcasts - light hearted and not covering hard hitting would be Off Menu with Ed and james. Evil Genius is good, although not as light hearted but funny. I've just subscribed to Spit or swallow which is two comedians talking to a celeb I think over a bottle of wine. Not listened yet but recommended by Sarah Millican so trust her.

Talking of Sarah, she has a lot of her shows on her you tube channel, she makes me laugh so much.

MagnoliaBeige · 25/01/2021 15:19

Schitts Creek and Modern Family are my recs!

BurtonHouse · 25/01/2021 15:21

Fortunately with Fi Glover and Jane Garvey is funny, witty and interesting - BBC
I've just watched Bridgerton. Utter tosh but it took me right out of myself and this unsettling time and into a different, very silly, world.

Notthecarwashagain · 25/01/2021 15:22

Was coming to recommend Superstore too. It's ridiculous and brilliant.
I've just finished them all and am gutted!

SuperSharpShooter · 25/01/2021 15:23

Everything is Alive podcast 😍
Just the loveliest thing I’ve listened to in aaaages.

takemebacktoelectricavenue · 25/01/2021 15:52

Agree with Bridgerton, it’s silly but I loved it! We’ve also been watching the US version of the Office which I’m really enjoying

Cornetttttto · 25/01/2021 16:03

Bridgerton. Entertaining!

Terracottasaur · 25/01/2021 16:04

To watch:

Brooklyn 99 - endlessly enjoyable, funny, clever.

To read:

Cold Comfort Farm - one of the few books to make me laugh out loud

To listen:

Mystery Show - a perfect gem of a podcast; gentle, thoughtful, insightful, whimsical, charming. Sadly only one season - I wish there were ten.

efeslight · 25/01/2021 16:04

Taskmaster, used to be on Dave, all the series are great

WilsonMilson · 25/01/2021 16:09

These are all great suggestions thank you. Making notes of this in case I lose track of the thread.

Have seen all of Modern Family. Going to start Bridgetown. Great podcast suggestions too, going to check them out now. God knows I need a bit of lighthearted silliness!

Bridgerton - my autocorrect seems to want it to be Bridgetown or Bridgestone!

Defo Bridgerton.
I've heard good things about the French show Call Your Agent too

Veenah · 25/01/2021 16:17

Parks and Recreation. It was similar to Schitts Creek to me in that I wasn't sure about it for the first few episodes, but it's so so worth hanging in there for.

Canwecancel2020 · 25/01/2021 16:20

Detectorists (bbc comedy on demand)

Number one lady detective books (if you don’t consider it cultural appropriation)

New Dads army film.

Gentle and nostalgic

AngeloMysterioso · 25/01/2021 16:22

The table manners podcast, hosted by Jessie Ware and her mum. Great fun to listen to and loads of episodes to binge

Chocolatefrenzy · 25/01/2021 16:27

Watched ‘instant family,’ film on Netflix. Brilliant, we really enjoyed it, funny but also touched the heartstrings

toconclude · 25/01/2021 16:31

Yes yes yes Cabin Pressure! The perfect radio comedy.

StillDumDeDumming · 25/01/2021 16:34

Absolutely the Good Place on Netflix. 30 min episodes. Deep and meaningful and also frothy. I watched these when dp was in ICU for months last year. (There is an afterlife theme but it's great)

prawncocktailpringles · 25/01/2021 17:09

Podcast: Reply All. Human interest and some are a little sad but mostly funny.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 25/01/2021 17:16
