Women walking around the shop eating with her mask off.

I probably sound judgemental and don’t mean to be but aibu to think this is wrong given current times?

I generally get disgusted about people walking around the supermarket eating anyway. Does anyone actually do that?!

She had her mask right down walking around stuffing her face with everything. I assume she had bought these foods before she was walking around the shop from another shop or went in to get food and back in. It was all junk food too.

I’d like to think there was a valid reason for her doing this. Maybe she’s diabetic or something but she was stuffing her face as soon as he got into the shop and was walking around? (It’s a small shop and I kept seeing her) Surely she knew she needed food before she walked in and could have eaten in the car.

I even a couple of the staff were giving her looks of disgust as she was walking around. But no one looked brave enough to ask her to pull her mask up!

It’s just a mix of the mask down and stuffing her face. Really got under my skin. 🤣

Sorry if I sound judgmental. Maybe she had a good reason!

Iminaglasscaseofemotion She had her "hands" in "packets" of crisps? How many hands did she have and how many packets of crisps?
I tend to just use one hand while I'm eating crisps.
Was she some sort of alien?

I knew what the op meant, there is always one on mn

Would you of been okay with her eating carrot sticks?

Freetigerking · 22/01/2021 17:14

It’s disgusting any decent person would agree. How would you feel if you picked up a tin of beans with someone’s saliva over it? Yuck. I saw someone walk round Morrison’s eating grapes and doing shopping and the security guy had a word. Hygiene plays a big part in all this.

Freetigerking · 22/01/2021 17:19

Surely if your diabetic, you’d stand and eat whatever you need to eat, in the one place, then sanitise your hands? Not walk about putting hands in mouth then touching things? I thought people gave toddlers or children a row for this?

safariboot · 22/01/2021 17:25

Glad I shop online since most people think this behaviour is OK.

YANBU OP. I think this person was probably - not definitely, but probably - a pisstaker with no health problems.

FoxInSocks2 · 22/01/2021 17:26

During these times it isn't the best idea and certainly not ideal. However, you don't know her circumstances or medical conditions. Earlier I was in the supermarket and started to feel faint, I considered grabbing something sugary and opening it. I'm glad I didn't now!!

Neotraditional · 22/01/2021 17:27

So you hold the bag and eat the crisps with the same hand?? You don’t hold the bag with one hand and eat the crisps with the other? Are you some type of alien?

Perhaps her blood sugar dropped too low and she's a diabetic.

MynephewR · 22/01/2021 17:31

I have always eaten in the supermarket 🤷‍♀️ if I'm about to go in to a supermarket and feeling hungry then I'd buy something to eat first. I probably wouldn't now though because I'm wearing a mask. It's never occurred to me that there are certain places that you shouldn't eat. I'm mindful of smells, wouldn't eat something strong smelling in an enclosed space but if I'm hungry then I'll eat, doesn't matter where I am.

Also I don't know anyone who cares about stuff like this, thank god. OP have you considered getting a life?

BreatheAndFocus · 22/01/2021 17:32

@Strugglingalone Yes, ignorance about hypos is absolutely terrifying. The most terrifying one is the thought that someone will think you need more insulin. Bloody terrifying!

But I don’t think this person was displaying classic hypo symptoms at all. For a start, shed pre-bought food, was with another person, was eating lots and continually, etc

You did the right thing going outside to eat. Ignore the tw*t who made a comment to you. There are plenty of idiots like that around and they’ll say crap like that to anyone. It wasn’t you or what you were doing Flowers

I had to eat a Dextro tablet in a shop recently, and that was ok to slip under my mask. If I’d needed to eat proper food I’d have left the shop like you did.

cazisalittlenuts · 22/01/2021 17:35

My mother was more than capable of looking absolutely fine, acting silly and being a gobby madam with me... however it was the latter two which always indicated to me, that she was having a hypo and didnt realise.

Not everyone with type 1 diabetes has low blood glucose that presents the same way. How do you know she hadnt already consumed glucose or chocolate, and was having crisps to further bring her sugar up. Keep your nose out, and stop being a judgemental wazzock

TiersBeforeBedtime · 22/01/2021 17:36

@FoxyTheFox

Maybe I am a judgmental bastard

You appear to have accidentally inserted a 'maybe' here, OP.

😂
HermioneWeasley · 22/01/2021 17:41

FFS, it’s against the law - unless you’re mask exempt (which she clearly wasn’t) then you have to wear a mask in the shop. If she had some medical emergency which could only be treated by eating crisps she should have paid for the food and eaten it outside. It’s extremely scummy behaviour to wander round a shop eating, even without a pandemic where people might not want you putting your hands in your mouth then touching items.

Whatsmyusername30 · 22/01/2021 17:48

I have a family of type 1 diabetics. They are very anxious about becoming seriously ill with the virus so they keep their masks on at all times in shops. If they were feeling faint they wouldn’t have walked into a shop like she did. If she had become faint half way through the shop and shipped her mask off to eat that’s fair enough but I’ve said this several times now she WALKED INTO the shop whilst eating and carried on around the shop. I was behind her going into the shop and seen her a few times. She could have finished eating outside or in her car.

To be honest thankfully I normally get my shopping delivered. This kind of shit probably happens all the time. I just don’t see it.

Covid aside, I think eating in shops is generally not a nice thing and so unnecessary. One thing I like about masks on public transport is it has really reduced the number of people eating smelly food and leaving their rubbish and crumbs everywhere. It's so much more pleasant.

Whatsmyusername30 · 22/01/2021 17:49

@jelly79

Eating in a shop with no mask on is obviously not ideal obviously

But the other issues you have are U. 'Stuffing her face' 'junk food' 'the unapproachable type'

I'm keen to know exactly what she was eating to have caught the attention of you and the staff 😬

I think the staff got the unapproachable vibe from her too as no one seemed to question her. Probably to scared to say anything.

BoJoHoNo · 22/01/2021 17:51

Its nothing to do with a lack of understanding or a lack of caring and more to do with it being beneath my notice. I couldn't give a shiny shite what other people are up to, I'm not the self-appointed Covid Police and I don't get myself into a self-righteous frenzy based on what strangers are up to based on my superficial presumptions. I crack on with my own tasks and concentrate on my own business.

Quite. Plus masks are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to reducing transmission. A significant portion of the general public had pretty poor personal hygiene before Covid. I find it hard to believe they're all now merticulously washing their hands on a regular basis after years of not doing so. Maybe shop assistants should also be forced to check customers are washing their hands after using the toilet and check how long they've been wearing their mask for in case it's old and now totally ineffective. Where should we draw the line?

Whatsmyusername30 · 22/01/2021 17:52

@Gilead

Your family are obviously not diabetic otherwise you’d know that a hypo can cause confusion and bad judgment. Her mucking about with her friend may have been the start of a hypo.
Really? Type 1 diabetics in a family. They tend to go into a shop wearing a mask as they want to risk their life catching covid.

She could have hung around outside to eat. She was with another person too. She was not alone.

You sound delightful
Why is eating suddenly stuffing your face when it displeases you?

I generally get disgusted about people walking around the supermarket eating anyway. Does anyone actually do that?!

This statement doesn't make sense. If you see people then yes I imagine people are actually doing it. Unless you're hallucinating people eating in shops.

I also think it sounds like you might have some issues if people eating in public disgust you. Perhaps with food or hygiene?

Whatsmyusername30 · 22/01/2021 17:56

I’m sure if this thread was about a child eating and touching everything the replies would be different 🤣 I’ve let my children eat in their buggy (many years ago now) whilst out shopping as I think all parents have as they aren’t touching anything. I wouldn’t let them walk around eating and touching everything in sight!

Can you not read @Neotraditional? The OP said she had her HANDS (plural) IN the packet of crisps. Is that how you eat crisps?

I’d just ignore the posters who are trying to excuse this behaviour with nonsense about diabetes etc. She was highly unlikely to be having a hypo if she was walking around eating crisps, surely she’d know she needed something sugary. It’s scummy behaviour to do what she did at any time least of all during a pandemic. She should have been told to leave and come back when she’d finished her picnic. It’s selfish idiots like her and her apologists who have contributed to the spread of this awful virus.
Whatsmyusername30 · 22/01/2021 17:58

@Plussizejumpsuit yes anxiety and ocd. Extreme issues with hygiene, cleanliness and anxiety about germs etc heightened with covid.

I think anyone without these issues would think eating in a shop touching everything at current times is disgusting. Most shops discourage have signs saying no food or drink.
