Please help me figure out what's wrong with my dog?!

Hi everyone

Posting for traffic.

My lovely, 5 year old sprocker spaniel has been whimpering/pacing/crying ALL day today.

He normally goes for a wee when I get up at 6-7, has some biscuits then lays on my bed or his bed and sleeps most of the day before a walk.

Today he has been the total opposite, I've filled his water bowl with fresh water, he's been walked off lead, I've topped his biscuits up, I've given him cuddles, all the fuss he usually has, he's weeing and been for a number 2, I've played with him on my lunch break with his rope.

I don't know what is wrong with him, I've felt his tummy in case he has tummy ache but he doesn't respond negatively to that, I've checked his paws, his mouth, his eyes there is nothing obvious at all.

He usually sleeps most the day and then has a walk and then he curls up for the night with us. I cannot figure out what is bothering him and it's driving me mad!

If you’re planning on a litter, you should have buyers lined up, although given the insanity of litters being bought before birth I’ve seen in lockdown, you’ll probably be lucky.

If you haven’t done all the breed recommended health tests, you are NOT decent people. You might potentially produce an entire litter with hd. Sticking 2 dogs together because one has a uterus is shit. Breeding should be done for the benefit of the breed. Yours is a x? The bitch owner will make thousands from this. Hope she’s registered with HMRC. Cockers are currently selling at £3K. Want to re-think taking a puppy?

People are being abrupt with you because you refuse to do even the bare minimum of the health testing required for breeding. You are immoral and irresponsible not to mention incompetent and this thread is exactly why I think that people should have to take an IQ and common bloody sense test to make sure they aren't a fucking half wit before they are allowed to take on an animal.

Instead of posting pictures and getting stroppy why don’t you investigate what specialist tests the dogs would need?
Look into their pedigrees and the coefficient of inbreeding?
Instead of berating people who are justifiably shocked that you wouldn’t do the minimum of health testing before breeding.
And no. Having had rescue dogs or reporting someone doesn’t make up for your failure to do these tests or even try to breed in a responsible fashion.
But you know that. Hence the defensive posturing and pictures that prove nothing.

I shouldn’t let it bother me. I should just be grateful it’s not my breed, and my welfare charity that we are talking about here.

I spent an hour on the phone to an elderly doyenne tonight, to cheer her from her loneliness in lockdown- we talked about her blood lines in the 60s. It’s a privilege and a responsibility to breed, not a right.

Great idea - cod breeding from a 6 year old bitch is even better than breeding from a a 5 year old one

The OP using the fact that the dog has got her through multiple awful experiences is especially distasteful. How is that an excuse to put together 2 random untested dogs?

OP your dog seems like a well loved family pet. However you could have avoided most of the challenges on this thread by confirming whether you had breed specific health tests done on the dog and bitch before mating them. If you did not do these genetic / health tests then surely you can see why people are raising concerns, particularly those who sound like they are vets or experienced breeds.

My neutered boy mated my bitch in her first season. Was quite traumatic all round. We hadn't realised she was in season (not quite sure how old she was as a semi-rescue) she's now been spayed.

If you know so much OP, I'm surprised you didn't realise how much the scent a bitch in season affects a dog.

Why are people commenting about breeding? Op came on here for advice about why her dog is unsettled not to be given advice on wether or not she should breed her dog.

OP I hope it’s just him missing the female dog and nothing else, always best to spread with a vet if your worried rather than asking on here.

OP, whether she likes it or not, is a backyard breeder.

She can argue until the cows come home that they are from 'healthy lines' but everyone who knows the first thing about responsible breeding knows that you don't breed a dog unless both parents have had all of the relevant health checks (which is not the same as just popping to your vet for a booster and quick listen to their heart), there are also specific tests needed for various breeds.

Again, the fact OP has done it before and the puppies are 'fine' means absolutely diddly squat.

It's irresponsible. If you'd ever actually witnessed what can go wrong when breeding non health tested dogs, maybe you'd understand why.

Sounds like the type of 'breeder' where we'll see these puppies on a website like gumtree or pets 4homes in a few months.

No one is against responsible breeding. This is not it.
