Please help me figure out what's wrong with my dog?!

Hi everyone

Posting for traffic.

My lovely, 5 year old sprocker spaniel has been whimpering/pacing/crying ALL day today.

He normally goes for a wee when I get up at 6-7, has some biscuits then lays on my bed or his bed and sleeps most of the day before a walk.

Today he has been the total opposite, I've filled his water bowl with fresh water, he's been walked off lead, I've topped his biscuits up, I've given him cuddles, all the fuss he usually has, he's weeing and been for a number 2, I've played with him on my lunch break with his rope.

I don't know what is wrong with him, I've felt his tummy in case he has tummy ache but he doesn't respond negatively to that, I've checked his paws, his mouth, his eyes there is nothing obvious at all.

He usually sleeps most the day and then has a walk and then he curls up for the night with us. I cannot figure out what is bothering him and it's driving me mad!

@isadoradancing123

Why does mumsnet hate dog breeders , obviously puppy farms is different and can be very unethical, but where are people supposed to get their puppies from

Mumsnet doesn’t hate breeders, I’m sure lots of us have got dogs that came from knowledgable, responsible breeders.

Your posts have clearly demonstrated that you’re neither.

I was going thinking the weather might be spooking him, it's really windy out there (obviously, storm)

But don't breed your pet, it's like pimping out a family member!

When my 2 bitches are in heat we don't take them out for a walk. We have a large garden and throw chew toys up the garden and they run after it bring it back and then we do this for half an hour a couple of times each day. Also walk them up and down garden on lead.

Are yours and your friends dog related as well ? I am confused and you said a spaniel and then said sprocker ? Or am I confusing posts.
Why breed when you do not obviously know that much and haven't done genetic tests ? Especially if you have sprockers as new dog as such , 10-15 years ago would of been a mongrel

Opening post. If you won't listen to other posters please listen to veterinari. The name may be a clue.
PS please don't breed. You say you and your friend will keep a puppy each what about the others?

My dog has had a litter with another female spaniel 2.5 years ago, my friend who I am breeding with had one of their litter (a male) Perfectly healthy dog and carbon copy of mine. Personality and looks.

No, the dogs are not related, I would not breed him with one of his own 🥴

I came here asking for advice on why my dog is crying not because I want to be bashed for breeding.

I know the family, have done for years, I'm friends with them. They have 2 spaniels (my dogs "son" and a female who they got the same time as I did mine).

I love dogs, I grew up with rescues. I would never mistreat a dog or take a risk if I thought the female for one minute would be in danger. The family care for their dogs just like I do and if or when she is pregnant I know they'll do everything they need to for her.

I'm leaving this here now, you can all argue amongst yourselves. Like I said, if it happens I will be taking a puppy and so will the family. The rest would be sold to responsible loving homes once old enough.

Oh please, pimping? How do you think puppies are born or how anyone ever gets one?

But you also won't educate yourself or invest in minimal health testing or to breed responsibly? If you're breeding puppies from parents that are not health tested and not assuring lifelong homes for them then you're risking the health and welfare of those puppies. Your opinion on your dog's health is not more valid that actual scientific tests. It's weirdly arrogant to think that it is.

It's really easy to convince yourself you're doing a great job when you refuse to actually educate yourself as to what being a responsible breeder really looks like:

You aren't doing this for anything other than to make money @dreams1990 if you were you'd be more informed and better at it. You are choosing to produce puppies at at time you can make maximum profit, and when rescue centres and animal welfare groups have already highlighted they expect a surge in dog abandonment. And you aren't offering lifelong returns so you're expecting other organisations to mop up the consequences of your profiteering.

If you were genuinely committed to good animal welfare you'd be engaging with the expert advice on this thread, not dismissing it because you think you know better than canine health and welfare experts.

@Veterinari how do you know we won't be offering returns? We've already agreed that that will absolutely be offered as we don't want any of them to end up abandoned or in a rescue centre.

I will make absolutely no money as I will be keeping one instead but carry on assuming.

OP - this thread has derailed. Everyone's an expert on MN Hmm

It's possible he's pining, it's possible he's got a pain somewhere, it's possible he's just in that sort of mood!

My Cocker boy (neutered) occasionally has days like this. Just won't settle, wandering about, whimpering, will lie down for a minute then move again then lie down.... in and out of the garden...I've never pinpointed the cause.

Yours sounds like he has a lovely life! I hope he's better today Smile

Not quite sure how you're not making money if you're selling them?

Young woman who works in my hairdressers was planning on breeding her staffy with her brother's staffy, the dogs are from the same litter. She fortunately voiced this quite happily in a full salon and got her arse handed to her, you just can't reason with stupid

OP has already done this once.
They have no interest in learning about responsible breeding.
They will do it again.
And the people who buy them will be playing roulette as to whether they get a healthy puppy. Angry

I guess I'm basing my posts on the information you've given. And you've answered either not answered questions or demonstrated a significant lack of understanding where you have answered.

Are you and your friend giving puppies away for free then? Either you're making money or you're facilitating her making money. Same difference. What's the point in breeding otherwise?

It's clear no one is spending money on basic genetic screening

Out of interest, can I ask those of you who have entire bitches why you decided against having them spayed? There is obviously a good reason behind this as lots of people on this thread are very experienced and responsible dog owners 🙂. We have a bitch who was spayed at around 1 year old. I would be too worried about walking her if she was in season and she adores her long, off-lead walks, even as an old girl now.

Not everyone @SoVery but definitely some posters are.

Feel free to prefer arrogant ignorance to evidence-based expertise.

Modern neutering recommendations are breed dependent. Increasing research indicates both pros and cons to neutering and the list of cons is often larger in large/giant breed dogs

@Veterinari Thank you

@catwithflowers yes we have wolfhounds. They certainly shouldn’t be neutered until full maturity. My four year old isn’t spayed. Keeping her entire may reduce the risk of cancers that her breed is horribly prone to.
Of course that has to be weighed with the risk of pyometra and obviously the hassle of exercising an enormous bitch who needs to run but can’t be allowed near entire males.
(Can you tell one of mine is nearly at the end of her season? Grin)

@shitinmyhandsandclap I can have the price of one puppy or have a puppy.

I am choosing to have a puppy, a friend for my dog.

That's how it works when you own the male.
