"For there is always light
If only we're brave enough to see it
If only we're brave enough to be it."

— Amanda Gorman, 20 Jan 2021, inauguration of President Joe R Biden

@cyclingmad Yes I think this is definitely what you're doing. You've said that you don't like Trump either so I don't get why you keep on with your heckling (because that is what you're doing)?

OHolyTights · 21/01/2021 16:10

I am also looking forward to seeing the First Dogs. Call me twee if you must.

ListeningQuietly · 21/01/2021 16:12

FFS
Biden has NOT erased women
He has passed an EO which many TRAs think is about them
but Women are still 50% of the world's population
and by being calm and organised
we can ensure that the IMPORTANT issues for women in America are dealt with

  • maternity pay
  • access to contraception
  • access to healthcare
  • access to childcare
are dealt with.

as well as
COVID
Climate change
racial inequalities
the economy

RedToothBrush · 21/01/2021 16:14

@cyclingmad

So you admit you don't think he is perfect but yet rather than judge him on what he does you happy to continue to blame trump.

Lol you guys crack me up, enjoy your Biden presidency and when it goes wrong you can blame trump hahaha

Actually if you are aware of my posting history, im pretty critical of all political parties and politicians.

Because thats the best bit about liberal democracy. Not agreeing with anyone fully and pointing out errors and mistakes to hold power to account.

Its how the entire system fucking works! You are supposed to be critical of others and be self critical and be willing to identify and admit mistakes.

I think you illustrate the ultimate problem here. The issue of how people dont know this and how power is held to account by the people and instead of having adult discussions of how we improve this process you think it should be ripped up. Without any thought as to what replaces it. Except 'just not that' and 'cos i say so'.

That works less well than the democratic system in the USA. Unfortunately.

SenecaFallsRedux · 21/01/2021 16:15

For better, for worse anyone born in the US really can honestly dream of being president.

And some who are born outside of it, if they have birthright citizenship. Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, for example.

As for the pets, I have searched for that cat's name to no avail. He or she looks at bit like Socks Rodham Clinton.

Can't wait to see the dogs lounging about the WH.

Also, for anyone who does not know, then Senator Biden sponsored, and his office did much of the drafting work, for the Violence Against Women Act, which was passed in 1994. Among other things, it provides funding for domestic violence and sexual assault programs across the US.

borntobequiet · 21/01/2021 16:23

I hope that the last few weeks were the high water mark of lies, misdirection, the confusion of fantasy and reality and fake news in general. If so, with a sane and “normal” government in place, some contentious issues such as the conflation of sex and gender and the resultant undermining of biological women’s rights to privacy and safety, and control over their reproduction, may begin to be resolved, even if this requires scrutiny in the courts.

OHolyTights · 21/01/2021 16:23

I like how the Bidens have already recycled previous presidents' furnishings but it would have been good to see the First Pets lounging about on the no-pets-Trumps' furniture and rugs, shedding hairs and washing their parts. So disrespectful. Happy days.

Didn't know that, that sounds a very positive and good thing

Better than renewing the furniture and recycling the policies ...

OHolyTights · 21/01/2021 16:29

My understanding is that they haven't got a cat but Jill wants to get one to join their GSDs Champ and Major at the White House.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 21/01/2021 16:29

I am somewhat inclined to think of Biden's early EOs not as "erasing Trump's legacy" but as "replacing Obama's legacy".

OHolyTights · 21/01/2021 16:31

Absolutely, DG...

I didn't know either (not surprisingly, as I'm British not American), but I think so too.

Oh sorry if I've linked a pic from the wrong time. It came up on my feed as now, and it had blue carpet so I thought it was legit oooopsie!

I hadn't quite kept up on the 'who can be president' question. So my kids who inherited American citizenship from their father but were born outside the US could be president? They each have a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, which I think is the equivalent of a US Birth Certificate.
ZZTopGuitarSolo · 21/01/2021 16:52

Anyone else enjoying the Bernie Sanders picture memes? I think this is my favourite so far.

Yes -- they are natural born US citizens.

The CNIB is not the equivalent of a US BC, but it is a declaration of natural citizenship, the key element in the type of citizenship you would need to become President.

pointythings · 21/01/2021 16:59

Roussette powerful indeed.

Some members of my family in the US could do with reading it and asking themselves those questions, but they won't.

DuncinToffee · 21/01/2021 17:03

Lewis Goodall @lewis_goodall

Pelosi says the Senate is now ready to receive Trump's impeachment articles.

Pelosi: "I don't think it's very unifying to say let's just forget it and move on. That's not how you unify...our responsibility is to uphold the integrity of the Congress of the United States, to protect and defend the constitution of the United States."

Pelosi continued: "A president doesn't get a free pass to do whatever he wants for the last month in power. People died here. Let's remember that. You get to unity with truth-not by making nice-nice."

lifesabitchandthenyoudie · 21/01/2021 17:05

@CaveMum yes.

They are reminding me rather starkly of an ex of mine – with their pseudo-intellectual, narcissistic holier-than-thou attitude. Feeding them simply supports their intrinsic belief that they’re right and clever, and everyone else is pathetic.

You can only stop their behaviour by ignoring their rude behaviour (for horses as well).

Shrillharridan · 21/01/2021 17:07

Its a well known tactic that is taught to people enduring abuse.
Google "grey rock technique"

Very interesting - thank you.
