"For there is always light
If only we're brave enough to see it
If only we're brave enough to be it."

— Amanda Gorman, 20 Jan 2021, inauguration of President Joe R Biden

'They won't have had much use so great if it's the same ones'
I'm talking about Bush's sofas here!

What Melania did to the Rose garden was awful but... apparently there was a drainage problem or something so it needed major work and the trees have been planted elsewhere. But I know trees don't take kindly to being moved so who knows if they survived. And why could she not have kept the garden in the Jackie Kennedy Rose garden theme, she must've known it would cause huge upset.

Sometimes I think the Trump family did stuff because they could. Not because it was right.

Joe has signed 15 Executive Orders in under 24 hours reversing what seem to be some of the biggest missteps of the previous administration ie Paris, drilling operations, travel ban etc.

I'm obviously all for it but I cant help but remember just how cross we all were when Trump did the same thing on gaining office, and according to the BBC (sorry can't link right now), Trump only managed 8 in his first two weeks. As I said, I am behind the things he's signing and from the international response, so are many people, but I cant see how this is going to help unite the sides?

ListeningQuietly · 21/01/2021 11:50

The USA is now
back in the WHO
back in the Paris Accord
Keystone XL has been cancelled
the Wall has been cancelled

The Grown ups are back at the controls

PerkingFaintly · 21/01/2021 11:50

CustardySergeant that's fabulous!

I'm so looking forward to getting back to just disagreeing with a US government, or being disappointed and critical in normal ways.Grin

The sort where you wake up the next day and there's still a country, and it's still a democracy. And though you're disappointed with X, and vehemently disagree with Y, yet Z is wonderful and A, B & C are very good news too.

I think he also has to unite his own side, and if he doesn't show that he meant what he said when he was campaigning, there will be trouble ahead.

Some of the things he signed like rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement are just bringing America back into line with the rest of the world.

ListeningQuietly · 21/01/2021 11:52

SanFran
All the orders he has signed have been telegraphed on the Transition Website
and the third parties involved have been notified
it is NOT a rush job like the last President did

PerkingFaintly · 21/01/2021 11:55

Yes, SanFranBear.

I think one of the things on the agenda eventually has to be tackling the weaknesses in the US system.

It's sort of creaked on because although people pushed the envelope, no one had actually ripped the envelope up.

Now the Orange One has, and it's made clear there isn't enough protection against an amoral, authoritarian cult-leader with a large enough group of enablers.

I think Trump signed 24 in his first 100 days. According to Wiki anyway.
At the time of Trump I just did not know that signing EOs was a normal thing for a newly incoming POTUS to do, but apparently it is. So I probably was cross at the time, yes.
It was just the way he paraded them, holding them up whilst preening that got to me too!

AngeloMysterioso · 21/01/2021 11:55

Just rewatching the inauguration... KH says I love you to JB after she’s sworn in 💜

Any president is going to have to work hard to reach FDRs 3,000+ Executive Orders. Admittedly over 4 terms.

edition.cnn.com/2021/01/20/politics/executive-actions-biden/index.html

This is the list of the first executive orders he signed. They seem to be either completely normal for a developed country in early 2021 (e.g. wearing masks on federal property) or completely expected (e.g. stop building the wall, rejoin WHO).

cyclingmad · 21/01/2021 12:08

Goodbye women rights! Its human rights now.

AngeloMysterioso · 21/01/2021 12:14

@cyclingmad

Goodbye women rights! Its human rights now.
This is the part I’ve been dreading... I know Biden is so much better than Trump but his support for identity politics is going to really screw women over.
Roussette · 21/01/2021 12:15

Thank god Biden has halted departure from the World Health Organisation. Trump tried.
And I'm delighted at US rejoining the Paris Accord

I think this is a good idea. 'He plans to follow Inauguration Day by centering each day of January on a specific theme, according to a draft of a calendar document sent to administration allies'.

It just sounds organised as opposed to chaos.

lifeturnsonadime · 21/01/2021 12:18

Yes I'm struggling with the dismantling of women's rights in the first 24 hours by way of executive order.

Ultimate no debating.

Still better than the alternative.

merrymouse · 21/01/2021 12:19

Goodbye women rights! Its human rights now.

Yes, the order to which you are referring is very flawed, but I'm not convinced that American women had many rights in the first place, given the lack of access to maternity pay/healthcare/birth control.

In America women seem very much caught between a rock and a hard place.

ListeningQuietly · 21/01/2021 12:21

I just read the Executive order re gender

It is much more nuanced than many are saying
and I suspect that it will slip down the agenda
because Biden has more important issues to deal with

raises eyebrows

Women's rights aren't important?

I guarantee that it will be a problem going forward. Especially coming up to 2022.

I also expect legal challenges to come in time to that particular executive order.

It will be a big issue for fighting the midterms and the next presidental issue because its a subject which will grate particularly hard with conservatives.

But at least that will throw some daylight onto the issue.

IntermittentParps · 21/01/2021 12:35

Thank you, Perking.

From the last thread:
I thought the speech was perfectly pitched for the occasion and the audience and any colloquialisms and repetition part of that. Biden is good at sounding folksy, friendly, authoritative and serious simultaneously.
I completely agree. Pitch-perfect speech, sober yet hopeful, quietly stirring, strong, authoritative yet relatable.

digismak.com/biden-inherits-non-existent-covid-vaccine-plan-from-trump-sources-say/

Biden certainly has his work cut out with coronavirus.

in the immediate hours after Biden took office on Wednesday, sources with direct knowledge of the new administration’s covid-related work told CNN that one of the biggest shocks Biden’s team had to digest during the period of The transition was what they saw as a complete absence of a vaccine distribution strategy during the administration of former President Donald Trump, even weeks after the use of various vaccines was approved in the United States.

There is nothing we can rework. We will have to build everything from scratch, ”said a source.

And Trump pretended he cared about Americans Hmm
