Can I fly to Spain

IndieRo · 20/01/2021 11:34

I will probably get slaughtered for even asking but here we go. I live in Ireland and own a home in Spain. During last lockdown, March to July 2020 we stayed at home in Ireland as we were not sure of the situation. Our schools are meant to be back on the 31st January but I can't see this happening. Its all just so depressing. From what I can see I can fly to Spain and quarantine when I fly back to Ireland. Our house is on its own, private pool etc so would basically just stay in apart from going the supermarket. Is there anybody currently living in Alicante that can advise me more.

What a fucking question...

OP, the first page on gov.ie about travelling outside of Ireland says:

Our general advice is: do not travel overseas for non-essential purposes.

How could you possibly think travelling to your second home right now is a responsible or appropriate thing to do? The kids haven't got an unexpected break from school. They're supposed to be home-schooling right now. This isn't the time to sneak in a holiday while you think you can.

Only last week RTE were reporting Ireland had the highest rate of new Covid infections in the world. The 14 day incidence rate shows that, on average, 1 in every 75 people were diagnosed with Covid-19 in the last 2 weeks. In some parts of the country it's as high as 1 in 39.

Because of these sort of numbers, we're on 5km restrictions, no seeing other households, most shops, schools, gyms etc. are shut. So many working from home. So many unable to work. All in an effort to get back to where we were as recently as the end of November.

And you think now is the time to get on a plane and go to your second home in Spain for a break? Have some cop on.

KrisAkabusi · 20/01/2021 15:09

Do you live with in 5km of Dublin Airport? Otherwise you'll be breaking the law by travelling there.

Coquohvan · 20/01/2021 15:11

Think most of us with a holiday/2 nd homes abroad would like to be there.
However, we have not been to ours since Feb’20 could have went when restrictions were lifted in the summer, we didn’t because there was and still is COVID-19 with us. Curfew still there COVID still bad. We won’t go until we are allowed to travel, glad we have someone looking after our place gives peace of mind.
Think by Easter we will see a big difference here with most of the top group’s vaccinated, tiers could go down, though travel I think will still be with current restrictions.

Thesheerrelief · 20/01/2021 15:13

Am also in Ireland. You can't go to the next county, nevermind out of the country! It's definitely not essential travel and as PP have said I think you need to prove Spanish residency to enter.

tara66 · 20/01/2021 15:26

Are flights reliable though?

sonjadog · 20/01/2021 15:27

If you go, be aware that the rules for travel can change very quickly. I wouldn’t go unless you have the finances and time to be able to have to stay a couple more weeks if you need to, and to be able to buy new flights if you need to, at much higher prices.

I got stuck in the UK at Christmas for an extra ten days due to borders closing and new regulations. It cost me 800 pounds over the initial cost to get home again. There was no way the changes could have been predicted, so even if it looks okay when you go, it can change fast.

IWouldLikeToKnow · 20/01/2021 15:43

Is Spain inside your 5 km limit?

Moneypenny007 · 20/01/2021 15:44

We have the essential travel thing too and yes I'm in Ireland.

Moneypenny007 · 20/01/2021 15:46

On top of that how would you like it if people who had holiday homes around u started to arrive for the duration or a wee break cause its shit in lockdown??? Sure they will only be popping to the supermarket too!! Grand all welcome!

BillieSpain · 20/01/2021 15:51

I can't GO to my holiday home in Spain and I am a Spanish resident, living here.

Stay away FGS

Toilenstripes · 20/01/2021 15:58

Go ahead, you’re special.

acatcalledjohn · 20/01/2021 16:02

@ acatcalledjohn - just here to say I feel you. My parents live abroad (I'm not from the UK) and my dad is quite fragile so haven't seen them in over a year now. Hang in there!

Thanks @Badbear! Pretty much the same situation as you. Thanks for you too.

I'm guessing the OP won't be coming back.

peak2021 · 20/01/2021 16:19

OP, please read your government's guidance before even asking such a question. I appreciate Micheal Martin and Leo Varadkar have a clue unlike Boris Johnson, but the virus does not only target countries with incompetent governments.

nanbread · 20/01/2021 16:58

If there was a way to get there that didn't involve so much contact I would be very tempted but I don't think it's wise to go through an airport right now

LittleOwl153 · 20/01/2021 17:45

A relative of mine went to alicante just before Christmas. He drove from England using ferry across to santander i think, then drove across to alicante. They were told they would only be allowed in if they had residence / NIE numbers. They were then told valencia was locked down but they drove in no problem. Not sure about the situation now however.

Dee1975 · 20/01/2021 17:48

Well I guess your own government website will give you the info and let you know if you can do non essential travel or not.
I don’t live in Ireland but my relatives do. And I’m pretty sure you are in a strict lockdown. With no non essential travel?

Another person here in the same circumstance. Haven't seen mine in a year. I have dual nationality so I could. But I'm not an arsehole, so I don't.

Flowers to the people missing their families.

WeAllHaveWings · 20/01/2021 21:17

I have a colleague in Ireland who told me on a zoom call this week, once you multiply up Ireland numbers are actually higher than UK.

No wonder if people are still selfishly heading off abroad on jollies 🙄

Disclaimer - I haven't done the maths myself.

BadBear · 20/01/2021 22:15

@MrsTerryPratchett we'll get there, I hope! (Excellent username choice too! Smile)

shitinmyhandsandclap · 20/01/2021 22:24

I haven't seen my partner for almost a year because of Covid as he's in a different country. Struggling to muster up much sympathy that you can't go to your holiday home

Newkitchen123 · 20/01/2021 22:29

Simple answer. No.
Don't be selfish

Ireland had the highest in the world per 100,000 a week ago or so! We were up to almost 9,000 one of the days. Now the numbers have dropped back to 2,000-3,000 per day. But still a long way to go...which is why travelling anywhere is so irresponsible.
HowManyToes · 20/01/2021 22:56

Why the fuck would anyone want to go on a plane full of people during a pandemic?

EasterIssland · 20/01/2021 23:07

I’m Spanish. I’ve not seen my family since 2019 despite I can because I’ve a Spanish passport ... don’t think it’s the right thing to do ... and anyway why would you want to go to Spain when most of the things are closed , you’ve got curfew and hospitality is closing in many areas.

Seems like you can visit (it’s not closed only for Spanish or residents ) however , Spain is not the Spain you know and you might have more freedom where you’re at the moment

Not sure when your relative travelled but the ban on non residents and non nationals coming here to Spain from the UK has been in place since 22nd December and for now is until 2nd February english.elpais.com/spanish_news/2021-01-13/spain-extends-coronavirus-restrictions-on-travel-from-united-kingdom.html
