@HappydaysArehere

He needs to be locked up. However, can’t see it happening as there are so many Americans who have believed his lies.
I agree he needs to be locked up. If what he has done goes unpunished then what exactly does a president need to do to get the book thrown at them? Let him off the hook and it is sending a wholly undesirable message to those who might follow in his footsteps.

It is not just him though. He could not have done as much damage as he did without the complicit support of many others in positions of power and they need to be held accountable too.

As to all the ordinary Americans that supported his more hate-fuelled views and actions, I think the best that can be done is that any subsequent investigations and prosecutions must focus 100% on truth over politics. Some of his followers will be beyond hope but many others have been sucked in by lies and misinformation. Finding a way to get them to listen to a different narrative is key.

We also all need to look at ourselves as a whole and think about how we deal with this new world where so much information (or misinformation) is spread through gossip over social media as opposed to official media outlets. Not to say that traditional media is beyond reproach, it very much isn't, but at least there is a degree of journalistic professionalism out there and publishers and broadcasters can be held to account much more effectively than individuals on SM.

I stayed up far too late to see if the list of pardons came in, but finally gave up. Now I’m behind on everything this morning!

It might be pouring with rain and blowing a hooley here, but nothing can dampen getting to watch Trump leave the White House. Only dampener is I didn’t think ahead to get a bottle of wine in!

Minimammoth · 20/01/2021 11:52

I noticed that in his last speech he says he’s done with the republicans and will start his own Patriots Party. I smell natzi.

ListeningQuietly · 20/01/2021 11:55

I admit I've never sat and watched an inauguration before

because they were always just a formality

but I will today

Roussette · 20/01/2021 11:59

I didn't realise he is doing another speech when at Andrews AF Base. I hadn't realised that.
He was urged to do the taped one.
This next one might be freefall.

PerkingFaintly · 20/01/2021 12:00

Ah Rousette that Dolly song is wonderful! Thank you and your DD so much for sharing that.

BoreOfWhabylon · 20/01/2021 12:03

Sunrise over Washington.

The sightof all those flags is very moving.

I'm worried about that kind of thing - might there be a trigger word in that speech which will set loose his faithful MAGgots to attack the incoming Presidency, one way or another?
Roussette · 20/01/2021 12:08

On discussion on CNN they mentioned the last time a President refused to greet the incoming one was Andrew Johnson in 1869.

Interestingly he was also impeached and this was written about him on Wiki...
We know the results of Johnson's failures—that his preternatural stubbornness, his mean and crude racism, his primitive and instrumental understanding of the Constitution stunted his capacity for enlightened and forward-thinking leadership when those qualities were so desperately needed

Remind us of anyone?!

I'd be surprised if he does. Like our own homegrown ERG nutters, he needs a cloak of respectability.

If the ERGers stood as ERGers we'd never hear from them again.

If he does, he will end up UKIPing the fascist vote and prompt the GOP to out-fascist him (as happened in the UK with the Tories) or he will (re) capture the GOP.

McConnells actions in the coming days will be interesting. He really wants/needs to ensure Trump is of no use to any party. A Trump that can't run for office suits that perfectly.

Roussette · 20/01/2021 12:12

The words were great and really brought it all home Perking. I love Dolly. DD is WFH and watching it all with me, figuratively speaking Grin

Roussette · 20/01/2021 12:13

When I say figuratively speaking she is 150 miles away but me and DCs are all into this today

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 20/01/2021 12:16

My thought is that if Trump is going to split the GOP anyway by being the figurehead for the hard right the Republicans may vote for impeachment. That prevents Trump from heading up a breakaway party because he can’t run. Even if it initially loses the GOP some supporters they won’t vote Democrat so most of them will probably drift back to the Republicans because they won’t have anyone else to vote for.

The clues were all there ...

Now you're thinking !

I know it's fashionable, easy and true to characterise right wingers as being thick. However those that would use them are smart and do learn. And one thing they have learned - from the left in the US and UK - is that it's incredibly easy to descend into 100 internecine pressure groups even within the same party if you don't control The Message.

Even now, with the leadership of Trump removed we've seen a preponderance of "-boys" groups all lurking to split the vote.

BoreOfWhabylon · 20/01/2021 12:25

Jen Psaki, Biden's Press Secretary on CNN now. Seems pleasant, speaks well, answers questions and is not a primped, over made-up Barbie doll.

Quite refreshing.

Roussette · 20/01/2021 12:26

Oh wowser, the wonderful Nina Simone, thank you Perking. What a voice. What words. Love it.

Coquohvan · 20/01/2021 12:42

Why is he getting a gun salute and leaving do. Was that not going to be scaled down?
So happy for you in US and afar who have finally going to get rid of him. God bless Biden/Harris, wish them and you all a future of healing and health.

Roussette · 20/01/2021 12:42

edition.cnn.com/2021/01/20/politics/melania-trump-thank-you-notes/index.html

First lady Melania Trump did not write her own "thank you" notes to the White House residence staff who have cared for her and her family for the last four years, according to two sources with knowledge of the notes and Trump's handling of them.

The 80 or so staff who received the type written notes were under the assumption the first lady had written them herself. Instead, Trump tasked a lower-level East Wing staffer with writing them "in her voice," and she signed her name

Grrrpredictivetex · 20/01/2021 12:45

Everything about this family is fake.

maggiethecat · 20/01/2021 12:47

It's a new day indeed!! I really cannot describe how I feel - disbelief, relief, gratitude, optimism are just starters.

If there was a crime of simply perpetuating widespread mental anguish on humankind he'd be charged with that too. Wonder if Nancy could add that to the impeachment charges Hmm

But now that he's almost out (are we there yet?!) and people can start to rid themselves of the pain and suffering inflicted are there any MNers in the US who can separate his vileness from his policy practice? Is there anything that he implemented that you feel was positive/good for you personally/the country?

It might be a big ask for you to contemplate this especially today so won't be offended if no one replies 😆

AcrossthePond55 · 20/01/2021 12:47

We're up and watching CNN. Waiting for Scrotus to leave the WH. It's getting real now!!

The Lincoln Project posted this on Twitter last night (apologies if I missed someone else posting the link on here):

The Trump Administration by the Numbers

It is also very chilling watching, from a different facet.
