Ok so I’ve name changed just incase ..

For context , I am 32, DP is 43, he has a 9 year old boy from a previous relationship whom he plays Fortnite with online regularly (every other day or so ) We also have a 4 year old together.

In between playing with his son online , he will carry on playing with other boys online that are also 9 years old or in that age range . He will put his head phones on and talk to them and be on their team etc .

I mean I don’t have a problem with it at all, but from another parents prospective - would you have a problem if your DS/DD was online playing fortnite with a 42 year old stranger and talking to them through a microphone ?

My DP LOVES his PlayStation and video gaming.

I play fortnite and other games with voice chat and talk with teammates it makes it fun and it's a feature in the games. parents need to stop their children using voice chat.

It does seem unwise at best for a middle-aged man to be talking to nine year olds online, with the exception of his son.

There is no way of knowing that they are 9 year olds. That's the way online gaming works. And the game is rated 12, so there shouldn't be any 9 year olds ...

Hmm it wouldn’t be any better with 12 year olds either

DH (40) plays all sorts of games online on PS4. He doesn't ever use a microphone.

When he plays COD online it sometimes becomes obvious that he's running round with a bunch of 10 year olds (you can hear them screeching to each other if he hasn't muted them).

It's quite funny. Sometimes they're way better than him and he eyerolls. Most often they're not too good and they all end up running round behind him relying on him to keep them alive. And he eyerolls even harder Grin He'll usually quit the game in the game in this situation as it's not fun. (the screeching or the constant reviving).

He wouldn't chat to kids online.

Why not? Why can't an adult and a teenager play an online game where they have been randomly matched up against each other? You know there is NO WAY to determine who you play against?

If you really think that is a problem, you better get writing to the millions and millions of people who do that and seem to manage just fine.

Givemeabreak88 · 19/01/2021 16:40

Exactly @Iggly can’t believe people seem to think it’s “better” because the child is 3 years older, it’s not any better, it’s still a child.

A 12 year old isn’t a teenager.

What you mean is that there’s no way to tell who you play against if you play in fortnite squads with “random” fill.

You can play fortnite without chat.

You can play fortnite in solo mode.

You can play fortnite in squads with people that you chose to play with.

There’s no excuse to play with random kids - I know fortnite, I play it a lot!!

@Crankley

I play online games and I'm in my 70s.

About sixteen years ago I started chatting to a player, we had similar humour and got on well so became 'friends' in the game. As we were chatting it transpired discovered that he was 14 and lived in Russia and I was in my 60s in the UK. We both thought it funny that we got on with such an age disparity but just carried on enjoying playing.

Since then, he moved to Australia to live with Grandparents, I helped him with his schoolwork if he got stuck on the language, as he got older I was his agony aunt when he was having girlfriend trouble, I checked all his essays for grammar etc while he was at university and he is now working as a social worker, just been promoted in fact. We talk on Skype most days, he calls me the old hag Grin and he has become a good friend.

I've made friends of all ages on line from 14 to 50, and see no problem with your DH playing and chatting to other players, regardless of their age.

This is a really sweet story, thank you for sharing I'm glad you were able to maintain the friendship

Fortnite is one of those games that isn't for under-12s but as it's so cartoony it's very popular with under-12s and most parents don't have a problem.

I would say that the responsibility here is on the parents to keep kids out of random mode, not on adults not to use it!

My ds in his 20s plays Fortnight online mostly with friends. When l go by his room l hear him/ shouting/ swearing/ general adult stuff. Your dp would be far better off in that kind of game. Then enjoy his games online with his ds too which is a fun way of keeping in touch.
It's not that he is doing anything wrong but it's better to keep things clear and totally without any misunderstanding happening.
