even microwaves yer dinner
we are only actually talking about £10 a week cost. i bet most folk spend at least £10 week canteen/starbucks/sandwiches/fags/alcohol whatever and get nothing to show

Kewcumber · 30/10/2007 15:32

I know it invlaidates the warranty but by the time you need it serviced/battery replaced generally its out of warranty anyway.

I'm NEVER starting a thread about my watch I would be blown to smithereens (though I suspect SSN and I would be pals on it )

smeeinit · 30/10/2007 16:00

ericl read the thread...............

smeeinit · 30/10/2007 16:01

kew go on start a thread, do it,do it!!!

boolepew · 30/10/2007 16:15

For the couple of posters saying buy a cheap watch and send the rest to charity, why? Do you send all your disposable income to charity? I can't believe what some people spend on mobile phones, so its all relative. Buy whatever you want, it's your money, and enjoy wearing it. ( I'd rather have a diamond ring though ):O

HappyDaddy · 30/10/2007 16:18

smeeinit, well done on your business.

I do think that can of worms was opened a little by you mentioning the price. Also that personalised number plates are naff.

BUT...

That's just my opinion and it shouldn't sway you as to what you want to do with your money.

Personally, the watches I'd really like are about £1500+ so I'll probably never have one. (sigh)

SqueeelyMeeely2 · 30/10/2007 16:23

personalised plates are not tacky, dh bought me one for my 30th and i was so touched!

littlelaPainAndTorture · 30/10/2007 16:26

It's funny that people think they are tacky over here, my aunt in the US has her name as her numberplate and no-one bats an eyelid. My other aunt has "CHEF" as hers (guess what she does!)

Bessie123 · 30/10/2007 16:30

Smeenit - you were pretty rude to catsmother earlier in the thread. She wasn't being horrible to you, just giving her opinion, which you asked for.

I couldn't give a stuff whether you buy yourself an expensive watch or not but I think that if you do, you should go for something more classic that you will love for ages.

Elffriend · 30/10/2007 16:34

What a bizarre thread and how terribly british to not want to discuss (whispers) money! Smeeinit, well done for getting yourself to your current position. Go spend as much as you want on what you want and enjoy. You're only here once, enjoy the good as well as gritting your teeth through the bad. You have made it abundantly clear that your children are not currently starving and have a roof over their heads. Ignore the tutting arm-folders. Do I feel jealous of people with more money - hell, yes. Do I feel humbled that I have more money than some? Yes, again. Either way, I know those richer and poorer do exist and I live with it! I once bought a pair of Jimmy Choo boots as a final fling before a redudancy kicked in. Very naughty but I still love 'em. When I have money I spend it (wisely or otherwise), when I don't, I don't.

smeeinit · 30/10/2007 16:47

bessie,if you "couldnt give a stuff weather i buy my expensive watch or not" why open the thread and then post on it??? elffriend nice post, thank you.

smeeinit · 30/10/2007 16:49

p.s wheres the spin off thread?!

OP posts:
littlelaPainAndTorture · 30/10/2007 16:52

Here it is, we've decided you are terribly common because you aren't spending £15000 on a Patek Phillippe (not really!)

SweetTrickorTreatFA · 30/10/2007 16:55

Well done Smee, but I'm afraid I'm with catsmother on this - your title and OP really upset me.
If you were my friend no doubt I would be pleased to hear it and glad for you, but I am a stranger and do feel hurt by the way this is being shouted about.
I am also a single mother, I see you have been there too, and no doubt your wealth is deserved, but I think if it were me I would be inclined to be more discreet as I would be afraid of offending people who don't have that sort of money, making them feel more inadequate than they already do, and dwelling on my good fortune so publicly.

I will leave the thread now because I don't want to rile anyone but I find it hard to see this thread on active convos, so will tick the ignore button now.
Sorry, I am pleased for you. Just upset that we can't all be in the same boat and some are far, far worse off than I am.

Nice fantasy though!

Blu · 30/10/2007 16:55

Smeeinit - haven't read whole thread (but my degree in mindreading and advanced studies in The ways of MN mean i know what it says)

Buy the watch, treasure and enjoy it (not forgetting to insure it).
Don't buy the number plate - no-one will know it is personalised, they are naff in extremis, and you could do something even more fun and luxurious with your children with the money.

Bessie123 · 30/10/2007 16:58

I opened the thread because I saw the spin off one. I wanted to post because I think your attitude to some of the mumsnetters who have posted their opinions (which again, you asked for) is pretty horrendous.

smeeinit · 30/10/2007 19:36

horrendous??? bessie please?!!

OP posts:
Kewcumber · 30/10/2007 19:52

Have you read the thread Bessie - I think Smee only reacted badly to one commetn which may (or may not) have been a misunderstanding anyway!

Blimey I'd love to hear opinions on how much my dear sis spent on taking all 5 of her family and two friends to Paris for the weekend to watch the England semi-final.

Actually I take that back - I think it would give me indigestion.

smeeinit · 30/10/2007 19:59

kew,you see this why i cant possibly take actual offence to any remark (bar one) on this or the other thread! horrendous! honestly,if you all knew me in rl that is the last thing anyone would call me! horrendous?! hehehehe!

Boogalooblue · 30/10/2007 20:00

Congratulations

Not sure why people think the OP of this thread is being boastful and why people are taking offense, but then again I'm American and thus don't have a problem with people who earned the right to reward themselves to do so. I'm puzzled why other people think that it is a slap in their faces for her to express her ambivalent feelings towards rewarding herself. Do they also lambaste another poster for asking if they are BU to get a cleaner/ironer/expensive car/etc? Oh wait...they do.

Don't really want to go back and read all the posts (started to, then got annoyed).

Well done to the OP, and if she wants to treat herself, and can afford to, she should. Period.

MrsSeanSlater · 30/10/2007 20:10

smeeinnit, I bet you wish you hadn't mentioned it now
My mum had a 'friend' who would stop talking to her if my mum bought anything nice that the 'friend' didn't have. I see a lot of that attitude on this thread.

smeeinit · 30/10/2007 20:13

thank you morningpaper

mrsseanslater (god i love that name!!) im glad i did mention it,makes me love the watch all the more!!

Are you a fellow Sean Slater fan? He's a bit of a neanderthal but he's sex on legs.
