absolutely spend it IF and ONLY if you can truly afford to (which seems is the case) - especially as you are on your own, damn well deserve a complete luxury as celebration for where you have got to and what you have achieved

smeeinit · 28/10/2007 21:15

thats a very kind thing to say lewisfan, thank you.

Well, it is your money, and if it makes you happy?
It depends how well you off you are really. For us, £525 is our summer holiday budget (give or take £50) so I could not live with myself for spending it.
Incidentally, I have a £5 watch from Argos, now 2 years old, very reliable!!

As for the personalised number plate - oh no, please don't, they are sooo tacky!

Hekate · 28/10/2007 21:16

It's nice. Darley Dale, which it kind of melds into, is not so nice, but you are near to Bakewell, which is lovely and Chatsworth, and there's some lovely scenery. Matlock is near - which is really nice, matlock bath is like an inland seaside resort - iyswim!!

oreGOREnianabroad · 28/10/2007 21:17

OK.
well.
I wouldn't feel comfortable with something that expensive on my arm. it just seems like a big, fat, 'HELLO, I HAVE MONEY, PLEASE ACCEPT ME' sign.
Having said that, I am a complete hypocrite because there are some things I have splurged on that others would think unreasonable.
Bottom line: if you want it and think it is reasonable, why should you care what others think?

You are welcome Smeeinit - I am also single so totally appreciate your getting where you have got - Well done

oreGOREnianabroad · 28/10/2007 21:20

Why do you want it? Just because it is expensive? Or can you honestly say it is a thing of beauty unlike any other???

smeeinit · 28/10/2007 21:20

kerry, get that scarf out of your drawer and wear it!!

BrownSuga · 28/10/2007 21:21

save the watch money for a bit and splash on a tag instead. you'll love it longer than a gucci

SeaShells · 28/10/2007 21:22

If you have the money and have worked hard for it then treat yourself. £525 is alot of money in my eyes, but everyone has differing opinions on what is / isnt expensive based on their own financial position, so perhaps you spending £525 on a treat for yourself is comparable to me spending £50 on a luxury item for myself. As long as you genuinely can spare the money and won't be getting into debt or sacrificing essentials to be able to get it then it's upto you.

squimlet · 28/10/2007 21:22

at the end of the day its your money and you should do as you wish.
But the fact that you are questioning it yourself and to us perhaps means that you are not entirely certain yourself.

smeeinit · 28/10/2007 21:23

ogre,i want it because i really realy like it,and have never had a nice piece of jewellery or ever been in position to buy myself a nice piece of jewellery.
it would be ridiculous to think im going to spend £500 on watch just because its expensive?!

I posted a thread a few months ago, wondering if £200 was too much to spend on a handbag. I got similar replies - "God yes too much money, save for a rainy day", or "yes if you can afford it go for it..." yadayadayada.

I did buy it and it makes me feel magnificent every single day, even when I feel sh*t.

So buy, enjoy and preen!!

bubblerock · 28/10/2007 21:23

You buy what the hell you want - you earnt it!! Well done

catsmother · 28/10/2007 21:23

Smeeinit - you misunderstood what I was saying. I congratulated you on your successful business and said that it wasn't unreasonable to spend money on yourself if you have it to spare.

What I was trying to say however was that IMO it's rather tactless to quote a specific figure, which most people would probably consider on the highish side, in a very mixed environment where many people are considerably struggling - and are statistically unlikely to ever get a lucky break (irrespective of how hard they work). I'm well aware that MNet is a very mixed bunch and I expect there are plenty of other people who are also fortunate enough to be able to treat themselves to what others would consider expensive luxuries - (I also appreciate that "expensive" and "luxury" are subjective terms) - but in the main, unless I'm much mistaken, most people are reasonably cagey about figures when discussing purchases ...... and I'd say that applies to real life situations as well as on here. I was brought up to be careful of boasting for fear of upsetting others.

No-one begrudges you your success but I don't think it's necessary to bandy prices about .... guess I find it vulgar. I wouldn't have replied for example had you simply said you were thinking of buying yourself something lovely and expensive for Xmas as we all have different ideas of what expensive is. Your business success speaks for itself ..... £££sss aren't required to convince anyone of that.

Good for you, treat yourself!
Personally, I would draw the amount of money out in cash for the watch...if you can bear handing over £500+ in cold hard cash then you do really want it (a card just feels like it's not money!) and won't regret the big spend.

As others say, I personally wouldn't waste your dosh on a personalised plate, but it's your treat and you have set your goals and achieved them, so whatever floats your boat

smeeinit · 28/10/2007 21:27

squimlet, i think you are right, why am i questioning it??? its prob because i had been on the bread line for so many years that spending £500 on a watch would sound ridiculous to me. so that part of me is thinking "dont be a twat" but the other side of me is saying " go for it,you work hard and really want it so go for it"!!

OP posts:
SpookyDooooo · 28/10/2007 21:27

Yes if you can afford it, you have worked hard for that money & by the sounds of it you deserve it

Do we get to see a picture of this amazing watch? link please?

oreGOREnianabroad · 28/10/2007 21:28

Spend the money on a trip to Dubai and buy a fake one instead.

smeeinit · 28/10/2007 21:37

spooky, that did cross my mind actually.....if i fall on hard times again i can sell it!
