To have zero sympathy for the fishing industry?

The U.K. fishing industry voted overwhelmingly for Brexit ; 92% voted Leave according to a poll from June 2016 (source : The Guardian).

Now they are bleating about the massive logistical and administrative problems and delays that they are encountering in trying to export their catch into EU markets. Today, fish transportation companies have been driving their lorries around central London to protest about the situation.

But this is what they voted for : to ‘take back control of our waters’. They voted Leave in the full knowledge that most of the U.K. catch was exported to Europe, and that that would obviously be more difficult after Brexit, so they should suck it up & stop whinging.

[quote donewithitalltodayandxmas]@miljea we can export all over the world and complete paperwork etc for this all the time, the trouble is they are not used to doing this and time taken etc , so this may improve
Also in general probably lots of places are ordering less, lots of restaurants etc across europe are also shut / less busy so likely also would of been a small affect as well
Lets see if there is still these same issues in a month.

There also isn't physically enough people to do this job. Each box has to be checked and signed that it's fit for human consumption by a environmental health officer/food officer. You have to have a degree and pass the professional exams along with the required number of years food experience to do this.
EHO are also doing covid response for businesses as well. They are extremely stretched and multiple vacancies around the UK. There simply isn't enough qualified people to do the sign off of all the consignments.

I went to Billingsgate years ago and was very impressed by the market inspectors who wandered around had a look and if they said no not fresh enough they would mark it and it was removed by the trader.

Makes sense- reputation.

Incredibly skilled job. I went for a cooking thing and we were lucky enough to get taken around by an inspector.

It's a very very specialised role.

And if course if shellfish is dodgy it can get killy. Non trivial.

DeeCeeCherry · 19/01/2021 00:17

Yep, no sympathy at all. They got what they voted for.

Let them eat fish.

Yep minimum 6-7 years to get there (3 years degree, 1 year professional EHO trainee followed by exams followed by minimum 2-3 years food work/training before ability to sign off)

Even the "quick" route of the masters degree followed by the same professional /experience requirements (which isn't accepted in Scotland anymore) is 4-5 years!

NiceGerbil · 19/01/2021 00:27

I love fish and shellfish and have a lot of respect for the people who supply this top grade delicious food.

I don't understand why they wanted to leave. Especially as it seems to be shut 6 quotas which we had but sold!

I do not get it. At all.

And all the funding from the EU wasn't secret either.

MaskingForIt · 19/01/2021 00:38

Effectively they didn’t want to pay for a stall at the market, they wanted to go free-style with a fish van and sell wherever they wanted.

Then all the people still preferred to shop at the market and they complained they had no customers. Boo hoo.

PhryneP · 19/01/2021 00:39

Anyone who not only voted to Leave in the referendum but then confirmed their vote by voting to Get Brexit Done/Brexit means Brexit by voting Tory gets fuck all sympathy from me. Lots of sympathy for everyone affected who didn't

upthekyber · 19/01/2021 00:42

@BoKatan

YANBU. I'd like to offer them the world's smallest violin.

And I don't buy that they were lied to. The information was readily available for anyone to access. If they choose to read everything published in their paper of choice then that is on them.

This with knobs on. They thought they could have their cake and eat it. Careful what you wish for
Changethetoner · 19/01/2021 00:45

Shellfish is rotting in transit because the beauraucracy means there are long delays, and until some sort of digital system is up and running, it is logistically impossible for these guys. How can you have no sympathy when thousands of pounds of stock is being spoiled? It's incredibly harsh on those directly impacted.

SoEverybodyDance · 19/01/2021 00:49

Let's put the blame where it lies - the government and leave voting MPs. Hold them accountable for their stupidity and mendacity. It's going to affect us all soon.

NiceGerbil · 19/01/2021 00:49

Because it was entirely predictable.

I want the UK to thrive. What I don't understand is how people who voted to leave in these sorts of jobs didn't see this coming.

Narniacalling · 19/01/2021 00:53

@NiceGerbil
Well yeah, but the fishing industry knew all these things. You might not have. You probably know about things that directly affect you. They should have known their industry inside and out.

NiceGerbil · 19/01/2021 00:56

The point of the post is that most people in the fishing industry voted to leave- stats upthread.

Namechangeforte · 19/01/2021 00:57

It just goes on to show how unprepared this whole lot was. Is there any estimate that could show how much food has been lost and at what cost to the fishing industry (not that I am sympathetic at all!)?
donewithitalltodayandxmas · 19/01/2021 00:59

@Scottishskifun therefore people cannot blame the fishermen that this hasn't been sorted.
All these you voted leave tough luck , says a lot more about them as people than people who decided to vote a certain way on what they believed was right at the time for whatever reasons.
Its really like some actually want it all to go wrong just to say see I told you so.
There was always going to be issues on the first few months etc. It was never going to go perfect straight away and I think the time to judge more is a year from now, are we better prepared or still in the same place

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 19/01/2021 01:01

@NiceGerbil it wasn't entirely precictable any kind of deal could of been done or we could if got things more prepared.
You can't say the day you voted remain you knew that as soon as brexit happened their would be shellfish rotting ,

Namechangeforte · 19/01/2021 01:03

@SoEverybodyDance

Let's put the blame where it lies - the government and leave voting MPs. Hold them accountable for their stupidity and mendacity. It's going to affect us all soon.
Yeah let’s find more people to blame, just anyone but the people who voted for the MPs and the PM twice! We have simply run out of options like foreigners, experts and the EU.

When will we see that it is OUR people who voted for this mess? This is life and this is how it works.
Imagine how it will go on the relationships board: he cheated and people were trying to show me the evidence but I didn’t listen and took him back in; now four years down the line, he has run away with another woman and has taken all our money, left the kids with me and I have no career left to go back to.

I think the fishing industry needs to get its fish in a row, just like millions of other people are doing right now. 🤷🏻‍♀️

That makes them an incompetent lot because loads of other sectors saw the loss that Brexit was going to cause and warned about it. Notable examples include scientists and financial sector workers (the ‘experts’).

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 19/01/2021 01:12

@Namechangeforte then we could also blame the goverment that allowed the quotas etc to be sold and all that voted for them.
Get over yourself and accept that some have different opinions and some may of voted as this benefits their business or life etc.
This whole you deserve it is just senseless and a bit I think I am better than you sounding.
Even this fishing thing could of been sorted before and can be sorted going forward ,
People are allowed to vote as they see fit and you can vote and regret it as well.
If in 1/2 years say brexit turns out to be the right decision will you then say all those that voted remain shouldn't benefit as after all they didn't vote for it.
Whatever way anyone voted we should all be working together to get economy moving and holding government to account and getting them to employ enough people, tweak things that can be rather than saying tough this is what you get.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 19/01/2021 01:13

@Namechangeforte no they think, longterm they cannot guarantee they made predictions and re: seafood with enough employed and help with paperwork availible etc this could of been avoided

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 19/01/2021 01:20

@Namechangeforte wasn't meant to actually tag you in first comment was meant to just be a general rant.
Apologies

Schoolisback1973 · 19/01/2021 01:22

Sorry but they shot themselves in the foot!
They were lied to but they decided to believe the lies.
I remember them rejoicing and spewing their hatred for the EU!
We're out of the club! Isn't it what they wanted?

lljkk · 19/01/2021 01:57

Dogfish shark is caught constantly by onshore fisherfolk. I don't think is endangered. I'm struck how Tories devastated mining communities and now fishing communities.

Dumb 2am question: why can't the lorry loads of rotting shellfish be made into cat food or even protein powder?

PhryneP · 19/01/2021 01:59

It's like a toddler demanding cutted up pear and then throwing a tantrum that they got cutted up pear. Substitute cutted up pear for Brexit.

@SoEverybodyDance

But people voted them in. Several times. They absolutely didn't have to vote for them.
