To tell my friend I don't want her "birthday gift"?

harrietbarrier33 · 18/01/2021 17:49

Three weeks ago my friend asked me to look after her 2 hamsters whilst her house was being decorated.
I have never had hamsters and I don't really like them but she was desperate for someone to look after them so I said yes.
When she has asked how they are I have been positive "oh they are fine don't worry we are getting on great" etc etc
Today is my birthday ..she rings me
As my gift to you I'm letting you keep the hamsters ...
So I said "oh no don't be silly,I've enjoyed having them but they belong to you"
She replied .."no no I insist ..."
I don't want them
Aibu to say no ?
I think she just can't be arsed with them anymore tbh

Poor hamsters, your friend clearly doesn't want them back.

Do you know anyone who can take them in and will look after them properly and love them?

Minniem2020 · 18/01/2021 18:47

This just reminded me of when I was around 12 I looked after my friends hamster when she went on holiday. Friend came back and kept refusing to come and pick the thing up everytime I asked. Until my mum bumped into her in the street, gave her a right telling off&she arrived at the door an hour laterGrin Probably a bit old now for getting a parent on to them but this just made me chuckle remembering

CareBear50 · 18/01/2021 18:49

That's hilarious

Absolute n utter cheeky cow!!!

TheWashingMachine · 18/01/2021 18:49

Initially when I saw the thread title I thought, oh dear another ungracious OP but this is ridiculous, yanbu

billy1966 · 18/01/2021 18:49

She is not your friend.
CF.

Godimabitch · 18/01/2021 18:51

Ha! Oh shit! She planned that one well. She's definitely sick of them and want to palm them off, poor things.

Cotton55 · 18/01/2021 18:51

@HighSpecWhistle

Just be honest with her.

"Thanks but if I'm honest I'm not really into hamsters, I was just being polite so you didn't think I was put out watching them for you. But I wouldnt like to own one. Let me know when you'd like to collect them"

Exactly this. DO NOT say thank you, it was kind of you, I'm just too busy with work or anything like that!! My God she is so cheeky! Why would you not just be honest instead of sugar coating it?? You're a grown adult. Just say what the above poster said.
happinessischocolate · 18/01/2021 18:53

Please don't give them back to her, just take them to a vet or pets at home and ask them to rehome them. Then block the cheeky fucker 😲

PyjamaFan · 18/01/2021 18:56

Cheeky bint.

Return them and charge her board and lodgings for the hamsters.

CoraPirbright · 18/01/2021 18:57

Cheeky cow doesnt really cover it - horrible, selfish bitch would be more like it!! I think honesty is what’s required here, with no “thank you” or “sorry, but..”:

To be totally honest with you, I only looked after the hamsters as a favour to you. I don't really like them - if I wanted hamsters, I would have hamsters. Now I feel like you are trying to palm them off on me. Please come and pick them up this evening as I do not want them and will not be taking care of them any longer.

Then I would be taking a long hard look at this particular “friendship”.

seriousandloyal · 18/01/2021 18:58

What a CF! You need to be very firm with people like this.

TheSilveryPussycat · 18/01/2021 18:58

Good grief! CF or what?

BTW, hamsters should be kept alone. Two or more will fight, and to the death. I know someone who did not know this, and got 3. There is only one left now Sad

ChaToilLeam · 18/01/2021 18:59

Cheeky bitch and cruel too, dumping her unwanted pets on you and pretending it is a gift. Please don’t leave them on her doorstep. She might just leave them there until they die of cold.

😡 I’d be dumping her as a friend for sure.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 18/01/2021 19:07

WTF , I thought she had bought you your own hamster as you seemed to like hers so much . Nope they would be going straight back .

Viviennemary · 18/01/2021 19:14

She has got an absolute nerve. Put them on her doorstep. I loathe hamsters.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 18/01/2021 19:15

Anyway... some hamsters are ok in pairs

Correct - those Russian Dwarf thingies. They bite like buggery and are difficult to handle because they are small, fast and aggressive.

If you want a pet hamster, get a Syrian, as with gentle handling they can become very tame quite quickly (can still bite like buggery if they get startled, though).

It's a difficult one as with the weather being awful you can't really just leave them on there doorstep as they could die.

I would give her a time and date, and tell her that if there is no-one there to open the door for them, you will pop them through the letterbox.

And if necessary, do it!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 18/01/2021 19:16

Don't leave them on the doorstep it's cold at the moment.
Pop them through the letterbox, that way they'll find some where nice and cosy to settle down.
You may want to put some of the hamster food through the letterbox ...and maybe pour a bottle of water too. Wink

1Morewineplease · 18/01/2021 19:18

Just say " thanks but no thanks." Just give them back saying you e realised how hard they are to look after and how noisy they are at night.

DeeCeeCherry · 18/01/2021 19:19

You have to ask...?!

RuralJuror · 18/01/2021 19:20

Three weeks ago my friend asked me to look after her 2 puppies whilst her house was being decorated.
I have never had puppies and I don't really like them but she was desperate for someone to look after them so I said yes.

I think she just can't be arsed with them anymore tbh

I wonder how many people would be insisting you return puppies to this heartless person. I would not trust this friend to look after any animals she obviously does not care about. I hope they can be re-homed with someone who cares more about them than the OP's friend.

BTW, Happy Birthday, OP! Cake

EmbarrassingMama · 18/01/2021 19:20

Is she 12?

MustBeTheWine · 18/01/2021 19:22

YANBU to say no. Send her a text asking if she wants to pick the hamsters up or whether she wants you to drop them off.

Lippyheaven · 18/01/2021 19:23

Oh my that’s cheeky on another level. I would def say no or you have allergies

Baycob · 18/01/2021 19:23

😂

Starlightstarbright1 · 18/01/2021 19:23

She is trying to offload them..Hamsters generally only live for 18 months so who if they wanted a hamster would not get a baby...Although clearly you don't want one...

I think you need to be blunt...I don't want them I will drop them round tomorrow or pop round when she opens the door.. go to the car get the cage....
