To tell my friend I don't want her "birthday gift"?

Three weeks ago my friend asked me to look after her 2 hamsters whilst her house was being decorated.
I have never had hamsters and I don't really like them but she was desperate for someone to look after them so I said yes.
When she has asked how they are I have been positive "oh they are fine don't worry we are getting on great" etc etc
Today is my birthday ..she rings me
As my gift to you I'm letting you keep the hamsters ...
So I said "oh no don't be silly,I've enjoyed having them but they belong to you"
She replied .."no no I insist ..."
I don't want them
Aibu to say no ?
I think she just can't be arsed with them anymore tbh

@Merryweather80 thank you for that kind offer.
I'm actually based in Newcastle and the furry hamsters have returned home.
I hope you find some new waifs and strays to take care of soon ha xx

Oh no! Take them back.

On a similar note, my Nana gave me her ram for my birthday one year. All I'd done was say he was quite handsome for a sheep and that was it, my birthday gift was him! I lived in a flat. Safe to say he didn't leave her farm and tasted delicious a year or so later!

Good lord yanbu. Bring them round to hers. They are her responsibility. She probably just doesn't want them. Dumping them on you.

AliceinBunniland · 20/01/2021 16:36

Well done OP

Phew! That's what I would call a good result!
Belated happy birthday to you @harrietbarrier33

Starlightstarbright1 · 20/01/2021 21:00

well done op..

Wonder if she is on MN and read the thread.

OakSun · 21/01/2021 01:20

Waves at OPs friend!
There is no way she didn’t read this thread and then realise it was about her and backtrack!
But good on you to admit it, I hope things improve for you

@harrietbarrier33

Hi everyone sorry for taking ages to get back to you. Well good news..the hamsters have returned home. She actually apologised for springing that on me and blamed the stress of home schooling /job commitments. Said a fond farewell to my furry friends and locked the door incase she changed her mind Grin
Home schooling? That says to me that her children's reaction to being told their pets were not coming back have forced her hand!

Keep that door locked! Grin

gerryk62 · 21/01/2021 10:21

Don’t be used
Say they were no trouble but they are not for me. Thanks anyway🌷

Thisisworsethananticpated · 21/01/2021 11:16

I can’t actually think of a shitter gift
Other than she literally boxes her turd and sends it in a parcel
In fact , I’d prefer that
What a dick !!!!

Anniegetyourgun · 21/01/2021 12:44

So your birthday gift was NOT having hamsters! Cheap, but it's the thought that counts Grin

Mexico1986 · 21/01/2021 21:27

I don't think she is your friend!!!!!

Brockaslass · 22/01/2021 08:51

I'd say no, tell her thanks for the thought but they aren't the pet for you. You didn't mind helping out for a short time but that was to help her, however she will need to take them back because you don't want any pets at the moment and you suggest she looks for someone else to take them. If she doesn't arrange a time tell her you'll be bringing them round to drop off.

My son bought me a hamster for Christmas one year. He was welcomed and much loved. My husband however bought me a new line prop. I know which gift I preferred!

Dontlikeveg · 23/01/2021 20:13

Just say you don't want them. Full stop. You don't have to say anything else like, I'm too busy with work etc. Take them back ASAP.
