AIBU?

To tell my friend I don't want her "birthday gift"?

Three weeks ago my friend asked me to look after her 2 hamsters whilst her house was being decorated.
I have never had hamsters and I don't really like them but she was desperate for someone to look after them so I said yes.
When she has asked how they are I have been positive "oh they are fine don't worry we are getting on great" etc etc
Today is my birthday ..she rings me
As my gift to you I'm letting you keep the hamsters ...
So I said "oh no don't be silly,I've enjoyed having them but they belong to you"
She replied .."no no I insist ..."
I don't want them
Aibu to say no ?
I think she just can't be arsed with them anymore tbh

I'd be afraid that if she had to have them back she would neglect them. Hamsters might be small, but they still need more than food and water (assuming she didn't go so far as to not feed them).

Could you accept them, and then when they're yours take them to an animal rescue to be adopted by someone who will look after them.

Hamsters shouldn't be kept in a pair.

(misses point of thread entirely).

Omg, that is unbelievably irresponsible of her and a bloody cheek to boot!! Tell her you don’t really like them but only did it as a favour and you will be returning them tomorrow. And then think about your future relationship!!!!! 🙈

She is not your friend.

What are the chances she will just let them out in the local park instead?

Really, really nasty of her to do this to you.

Yes, get rid. How ridiculous.

Just tell her point blank you don’t want them, you was doing her a favour and you will drop them off/tell her to pick up ASAP! That is very cheeky, I think she just wanted to offload, let’s me honest they are very easy to accommodate even if the house was being renovated!

She's realised that life is easier without out and she's being a CF.

Take them back or text her and tell her she needs to collect them NOW

I would bring them to an animal charity to be rehomed OP, and then have fuck all to do with this person ever again. What kind of person dumps family pets like that? She is a shit animal owner and shit friend.

Give them back to her as a 'gift' with a greetings card for Burns Night, Chinese New Year or another festival of your choice.

Hilarious! I wonder what I can give my friends for their birthday presents that I don't want anymore...

I would just say to her, are you actually being serious? You're dumping your hamsters on me? I looked after them as a favour. I don't want hamsters. If you don't want them you heed to drop them off at the local shelter.

Don’t say you’re too busy with work.
Just say no, I don’t want them.

If they are dwarf Russian hamsters, they are fine in pairs.

Keep the hamsters then buy her a tarantula for her birthday.

Seriously though, animals are not objects to be passes around as gifts or discarded when it doesn't suit her. Reconsider your friendship with this cruel, selfish person. Poor hamsters.

How very weird. So what did you say to her whilst on the call then? Surely not just 'OK, bye' .

What a cheeky mare! Please come back and tell us what she says when you tell her to do one Grin

Bloody hell I picked up the wrong quote... really should proof read.

Anyway... some hamsters are ok in pairs.

Just be honest with her.

"Thanks but if I'm honest I'm not really into hamsters, I was just being polite so you didn't think I was put out watching them for you. But I wouldnt like to own one. Let me know when you'd like to collect them"

I was coming on here to say YABU for refusing a present, but bloody hell you're not.

She just doesn't want them and is palming them off on you.

Cheeky fucker - she’s obviously decided she doesn’t want them and wants to offload them!

Wow, this is some outrageously blatant CFery!

I'm prepared to be sharply corrected on this but I'm pretty sure hamsters do not have to be removed from a house when it's being decorated, I mean can understand paint smells but surely you'd move the cage to a different room? Anyhoo the point is - this was her plan from the start, she had no intention of taking them back! YADNBU she is a cheeky fucker of the highest order!

I would just laugh at this. Similar happened to me. A friend let us borrow a goldfish for a while because my dc were really interested for about 10 minutes. She generously said we could keep it in front of the kids. I later said I didn’t want it and she found someone happy to put it in their pond.
