Please humour me.

I've very little going on right now other than homeschool Wink

Adding some laundry bits to my click and collect.

What should I order to make ours clothes (and home while they dry) smell amazing?

Distilled white vingar for the softener tray. Cheap and cheerful, great at high temperatures for cleaning both the wash and the machine.

DameCelia · 18/01/2021 16:20

Not fabric conditioner.
Coats fabric in a layer that stops towels absorbing water, makes everything very slightly sticky so it gets dirty quicker and smells overpowering (even when you think it doesn't).
Essential oil is good.
Or as pp, white vinegar, cleans traces of detergent and smells out of clothes, and weirdly doesn't leave the smell of vinegar behind.
And open the windows in the house for a fresh smell.
If it really has to be something chemical then unstoppables in small quantities aren't too bad!

lobsteroll · 18/01/2021 16:23

Great thread!

@Cornetttttto - so when you put the vinegar in with a wash; there is no trace of vinegary smell at the end?

What washing powder etc do you all use? I used to use liquid but am back to powder now as I do multiple loads a day so feels more economical.

What is better for clothes? Powder/liquid/gel?

lobsteroll · 18/01/2021 16:24

Oh and how much vinegar in the softener tray?

Cornetttttto · 18/01/2021 16:29

I use Aldi pods, nothing fancy. As for quantity of vinegar? Maybe a third of a bottle as sold in Aldi, usually use it when doing towels to make sure they're completely fresh.

TheCap · 18/01/2021 16:29

I use powder (bio to get stains out) and fabric softener (sorry to PP!) Also agree with using white vinegar every so often. I like Unstoppables but only use for bed linen.
The thing that has really made my washing smell 100 times better recently though, has been to get a new machine.

Lemmeout · 18/01/2021 16:29

Don’t use the smelly chemicals that now reside in the laundry aisles. It feels like there must be an environmental impact??

Lemmeout · 18/01/2021 16:31

Bicarbonate and vinegar is amazing to clean the inside of the laundry soap drawer.

PhryneP · 18/01/2021 16:32

I like daz, surf lavender and fairy conditioner. Quite like Ariel

Cornetttttto · 18/01/2021 16:34

Yep, it really winds me up how people claim to understand environmental change and how they can reduce their impact yet flush chemicals through machines and into the water supply.

Jobsharenightmare · 18/01/2021 16:35

Oh great. Do you mean white wine vinegar and how many ml please?

Fizbosshoes · 18/01/2021 16:36

My favourite is surf 5 herbal essences (I think that's what its called) but I only get it when it's on offer, so now I'm shopping less often I have to make do with other ones! I might try the vinegar trick although I gag at the smell of vinegar! (I hate it Envy)
The other thing I notice is that I used to dry clothes on an fairer in the utility area off our kitchen, but I think the cooking smells sometimes cancel out the washing smell if that makes sense. So I put the dryer in the lounge now. It doesnt look great bit we have no visitors so it kind of doesnt matter and it smells nice as well!

Fizbosshoes · 18/01/2021 16:37

*airer

thebakeoffwasntasgoodthisyear · 18/01/2021 16:37

Bold lavender & camomile liquid detergent is my favourite

DeeCeeCherry · 18/01/2021 16:42

2-3 drops of Peppermint Oil.
White Vinegar.

I never use Fabric Softener it's so bad for your health. & the environment

AriesTheRam · 18/01/2021 16:43

Fairy powder and Fairy softener

FuckinGoddess · 18/01/2021 16:43

Very expensive, but Francis Kurkdjian fabric conditioner is divine. I only use it occasionally for my bedding

Bumble84 · 18/01/2021 16:45

Every now and then (when towels go foostie) I wash them in vinegar and then bicarbonate of soda. Surprised at the difference it makes actually and no vinegar smell at all.

diamondsr4u · 18/01/2021 16:47

I use fairy non bio pods with fairy fabric conditioner or sometimes I'll use lenor. I've used the pods alone without any conditioner and still smells amazing!! I've got so many compliments from family when they come over, they've all started using fairy non bio pods because of the gorgeous smell it gives

InvisibleToEveryone · 18/01/2021 16:49

I use fabulosa
From aldi.

I don't use as much as it says, just 2 caps in with a neutral fabric softener, smells nice and has got rid of the horrid teen boy smell on his tops!

DaphneBridgerton · 18/01/2021 16:52

I like fairy non-bio pods
Hate those sickly smelling fabric conditioners
Am currently trialing E-cover (first wash just went on) to see if I prefer that scent as it's meant to be more subtle

FuzzyPuffling · 18/01/2021 16:57

Outdoor washing line in the sun and the breeze.
There is no fake chemical perfume on earth that can compete with this.

IMissFrance · 18/01/2021 16:58

Thanks all. I don't use softener for my towels or washable period pads/pants. But haven't tried the white vinegar.

Will add some to my wash.

Ecover is on offer on Tesco currently. So may try that. Smile

Also - my house smells fine and I open the windows for 2 hours every morning - but it's nice when the washing is hung on the airer and smells lovely too.

@lobsteroll Its a tablespoon of white vinegar - its been distilled and has no odour.

My tip are to keep the machine clean, especially the drum and the drawer. Every month I run it empty on the hottest setting with 3 tablespoons each of white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda.

I use a third or the recommended amount of powder for most loads and pre treat marks. The powder goes in the drum with the washing, not in the drawer.

Frozenintime · 18/01/2021 17:00

Plain aeriel powder and fairy fabric conditioner smell lovely
