Please humour me.

I've very little going on right now other than homeschool Wink

Adding some laundry bits to my click and collect.

What should I order to make ours clothes (and home while they dry) smell amazing?

Some great tips. I want to stop using fabric conditioner. Does anyone use essential oils on dryer balls? Do they leave oil stains everywhere? Or how else would you use the oils?

PivotPivotPivottt · 18/01/2021 17:12

Fairy softener or Lenor Sunshine Burst always leave my clothes smelling great.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 18/01/2021 17:37

Agree re. White vinegar. The super cheap white distilled vinegar which sells for 42p for a bottle at Tesco, at the bottom of the shelf - foot level. NOT white wine vinegar! It doesn't smell of anything at the end of the wash and removes lingering odours from the clothes.

ReindeersAhoy · 18/01/2021 18:19

I use Smol tablets and softener and it's smells lovely. Also completely plastic free.
I think I will try the vinegar trick too.

Itsnotalwaysme · 18/01/2021 18:50

I think changing the "fragrance" of the washing powder/liquitabs really useful, if you always use the same scent you will stop smelling it. I alternate between a few depending on what's on deal

mortensmike · 18/01/2021 18:55

I bought some fabric conditioner but have no idea which part of the drawer it goes in; they aren't labelled and we don't have the instruction book as our machine was in the house when we moved in.

It's got three sections, left and right and a tiny one in the middle.

I use peppermint oil, just 2 or 3 drops in the rinse draw at start of wash. I have been known to forget and just put it in with the soap, doesn't seem to matter. I use a little white vinegar too. No oil stains or vinegar scent, it's fine.

Fabric conditioner is awful for the respiratory system and skin, contains all sorts of nasty ingredients, some are cancer-causing.

Also goes into our water systems once flushed out of drain so terrible for aquatic life too. Doesn't seem worth it just for fragrance so it's a good call to stop using it

You might be able to find helpful instructions if you google the make and model. Most appliance handbooks are available online.
mortensmike · 18/01/2021 19:10

@trickyd Unfortunately we don't know what it is, the logo has long since worn off. It's been in the house over 10 years!

Bettyboop82 · 18/01/2021 19:11

Comfort ‘Sunshiny Days’ is lovely! I bought it after smelling a friend’s laundry drying in her house (pre Covid) and. Ow don’t use anything else!

june2007 · 18/01/2021 19:14

If I find "amazing smelling laundry" i think too many chemicals and not enouggh rinses to me clothes shouldn,t smell.

Watto1 · 18/01/2021 19:15

Hanging the washing outside for a good blow around is the best for nice smelling washing but obviously not always possible in January!

Bumble84 · 18/01/2021 19:21

@Watto1 completely agree! Nothing better than fresh bed sheets just off the line, bring on spring days!

womaninatightspot · 18/01/2021 19:24

I throw a little scoop of bicarb in every wash.

SerendipityCity · 18/01/2021 19:25

Comfort Intense. Lingers for days on clothing and in the house. I buy several when they are on offer. I don't find the scent overpowering, just extremely pleasant. Have had many compliments and so do other friends who also use it and shared with me what the lovely smell was when questioned.

Also sometimes use salt crystals in the machine on a hot empty wash -old machine had become very moody smelling so trying to preserve this longer.

Twillow · 18/01/2021 19:31

Fairy powder (liquid left a build-up of slimy black mould on the outside of the drum which kept coming off on all our whites - yuK!)
A scoop of any brand stain remover powder added for whites.
Given up using fabric conditioner when I read it stopped towels staying fluffy, and gradually stopped using it for anything. Haven't noticed any difference except scent...
for which I now add a capful of Zoflora instead. Delicious!

PinkyParrot · 18/01/2021 19:33

I put lavender oil, a few drops, in the rinse tray. Especially worth doing with sheets.

banivani · 18/01/2021 19:37

I don’t do this myself, but in my youth I lived in France for a few months and was introduced to eau de linge. Basically scented water (alcohol I think) that you spray lightly on stuff while you’re ironing it. It smells nice, like posh French babies. Grin

Squidgyflump · 18/01/2021 19:44

@mortensmike the conditioner goes in the little one in the middle

Chicchicchicchiclana · 18/01/2021 19:48

Lidl Formil powder in the big box.
Fairy fabric conditioner but not on towels.
Line dry where possible or put out on an airer even on a damp day in winter, some of the water will still evaporate away.

The no. 1 worst thing you can do to washing, imvho, is tumble dry it. It all comes out as soft and floppy and feeling like you've already worn it, slept on it or dried yourself on it.

Raisinandcheese · 18/01/2021 19:50

White vinegar is an interesting tip.
I have tried to be more environmentally friendly for a few years, but it’s not always possible.
I use Method washing liquid, fabric softener and cleaning products.

YouBoggleMyMind · 18/01/2021 19:50

I use smol capsules and then run a cleaning tablet through the washing machine on a hot wash once a month.

NoOneOwnsTheRainbow · 18/01/2021 19:51

I tried white vinegar and didn't like it. A cap full of listerine (I get the purple one) works wonders on stinky loads that won't come clean, especially DH's sports T-shirts. I put it in the space for softener and use my usual detergent as well.

JohnBarron · 18/01/2021 19:56

Comfort ‘Sunshiny days’ just makes everything smell lovely. People even comment.

BigSkyLife · 18/01/2021 19:59

Bold tablets, and a capful of zoflora in the softener drawer.
